yeah, i tried using godot years ago, but decided to stop because of their mandatory custom language. With GDScript you have to re-invent a lot of bicycles for any non-trivial use case

Redot is a total joke. It's already behind Godot in features and has a INSIGNIFICANT team of manchildren who can't handle a marketing person (who has nothing to do with the engine itself) making a tweet. If you're using Redot, you're already behind.

Redot at least for a while will be a bit better because it's just Godot + more. The problem is when forks are just abandoned and not updated and at some point just outdated... In reality everyone who just want best engine should care about Redot to some degree. Why? * Redot engine plans to minimize risk by keeping core untouched at least until they don't have stronger team than Godot. they don't need big team because they just gonna copy all Godot updates and then merge with their own compatible updates. In this situation minimal effort is enough to keep Redot always better than Godot. The problem is that even this minimal effort is often too much without any support (not much is needed for good start but some support is still needed) * It's important to understand that even without touching core you can implement many big features (If I remember currently they been talking about new light baking and code editor improvements) * Godot is mostly driven by corpo requests. Community is discouraged because requests and contributions are often ignored and Redot is potential remedium for this problem and right now they talk a lot about fixing ignored bugs. * You might think that Redot won't be better because Godot can just merge features from Redot but in reality this probably won't happen. Why? Because Redot seems open to implement anything that is good when Godot constantly bans and rejects good, even old big contributors for personal reasons. Merging stuff from Redot would be like accepting rejected contributors, so this won't happen...

Heh, Redot is already 48 commits ahead of Godot! Except, they're _all_ just changing the name in various places in documentation and messages. They've said the goal is to be faster and more responsive to community PRs, which _could_ certainly give them an edge over Godot. Godot has 3k open PRs, dating back 4 years, many of which have been allowed to bitrot without comment from the repository maintainers. If godot can mine those for useful features, it may pressure the Godot maintainers to actually manage their PRs. Time will tell.

@@Crystan No it already has several bug fixes that godot dose not. And on top of that it is set up so it can incorporate any update from godot in just a few clicks. Its like having two dev teams. Redot will quickly outpace godot as godot quickly kills itself.

@@lordmaddog6003 PR requests don't work like that. They still need to get implemented. What team red did was take the latest beta build of godot and rebranded it. That's really it. Unless they develop a new and unique feature or set of features that godot doesnt have, redot will struggle garner and keep support. Don't get me wrong I'd like to see it succeed but being a mere rebrand ain't gonna cut it.

I rarely play games and even more rarely make my own games. 2 years ago I worked on recreating a flashgame in pygame. When it comes to Godot and Redot I only heard about the controversy, but I don't know any details. In the end I think it is good, if there is more competition. What I've heard is that there are a few long term annoying bugs in the Godot engine and I hope that Redot works on fixing them. If I ever make my own game, Godot and Redot are probably the game engines I will use. And I hope by then both of them are better than they are now.

Can't have a fork without a common point in history, and from what I understand their first goal was to ensure they got everything right to start building stuff on top of the divergence point, before starting throwing new stuff in. Makes sense, don't wanna have to waste time figuring if a new issue was on the original or on the new change.
