using the wood chipper as a tonal ground made me chuckle, but then i thought about it, and it's very smart. this is a gorgeous piece of music and I'm very glad i found it. thank you

I just recently discovered Octave Tempering myself! 22edt and 24edt greatly improve both fifths and thirds of 14edo and 15edo respectively. I've even maxed out the intonation on my 12edo electric to get closer to 16ed5/2 or 22ed7/2 or 42ed11 (Different flat oftave renderings of 12, close enough to equal with each other that my ear and tuner can't tell the difference.)
@zpc9225
@zpc9225 4 күн бұрын
I did the same on one my 12edo electrics. I flattened the octave by about 10 cents- within my standard tolerance. You don't really notice much of a difference melodically but with harmony it makes a considerable difference.

Idyllic! I almost hear a bagpipe drone in the background- or is that just microtonal resonance through the open strings?
@zpc9225
@zpc9225 4 күн бұрын
I believe it was some sort of resonant byproduct, not sure the source. The bridge perhaps?
@isaacmurphy591
@isaacmurphy591 4 күн бұрын
@zpc9225 very cool! Acoustic guitar definitely showcases the interaction between harmonics much more than electric, though floating tremolo gives slightly more bridge resonance. I bet 22edo would actually blend better with the slight sharpening of harmonics caused by the physical weight of the strings, since it's sharp overall!

Good job what edos can be accessed by skip fretting this guitar?
@zpc9225
@zpc9225 2 ай бұрын
Skip fretting besides the obvious 13edo? None, unless you count 2edo. You could do a 138cet 13/12 non octave system I suppose. I strongly favor 26 in it's entirety over those options though.
@SumangalSinhaRoy
@SumangalSinhaRoy 2 ай бұрын
@@zpc9225 There is 41 edo skip fretted into 20.5 edo with the kite guitar. Are you saying that something similar can't be done? There are more frets.
@zpc9225
@zpc9225 2 ай бұрын
@@SumangalSinhaRoy I'm aware of the Kite guitar. 41 is an odd numbered edo so a division of the double octave (ED4) is feasible. 41 works especially well for this when tuned in 3rds on a seven string. Of course you can arbitrarily omit whichever frets you like as long as you can make practical use of it.
@SumangalSinhaRoy

@@zpc9225 Since there are more frets, couldn't there be more skip fretting configs?
@zpc9225
@zpc9225 2 ай бұрын
@@SumangalSinhaRoy You can arrange any fretting however you want according to ones best interest. For instance I once knew a guy with a 34edo guitar but he left the second octave as 17edo. That's about all I can say on it.

This is very good compared to a lot of beyond 12 tone uses. What is it like learning scales with the notes in between, they look like the 3 note per string stuff I have done for years just with more notes in a tighter space.
@zpc9225
@zpc9225 2 ай бұрын
What's great about systems like 19, 26 and 31 is that they have meantone. So you can play traditional music. However 26 has most exotic flavor of all meantone systems because it has a neutral second 13/12 right in the diatonic scale. It can get a bit disorienting with all of the frets but it's doable with fingerboard inlays and some practice. Once you get that under your belt it's fairly straightforward to navigate on. I'm concentrating on what makes the tuning shine in a more consonant way, rather than overly abrasive and dissonant tonalities. While the explicitly strange stuff may have it's place, I think this approach has more potential to capture people's interest and showcases the benefits and reason for using microtonal tunings. At least that's what I aim for. It's more musical and pleasant in my opinion.
@TheGreatBaronOBeefDip
@TheGreatBaronOBeefDip 2 ай бұрын
@@zpc9225 Thank you so much for responding this much, I have never been interested in true temperament or quarter note frets, but I would honestly try one to see if I could navigate, because I intuitively navigate 6,7,8, and extended range instruments just fine. I think the intervallic relationships would be hardest to learn.
