Love the comment about the crane. One issue with walther's kits is that the picture is not fully what you get. The Vulcan works doesn't come with a crane either. Plus nothing is painted like the picture shows (worse for the life like branch) Plus instructions are very well known issue as being bad. NOW if you want to try something more interesting try a kit from Faller. Already have colors, great instructions. Some are lighted and some have interiors. Plus quite a few can be motorized, some even have water pumps.

Great video as always! I do have a statement to make that actually turns into 2 questions. You used your spray paint for the base color on the walls, then applied the wash for the mortar joints, then applied acrylics for window sills and possibly individual bricks, then applied your powders and then sealed it with dull coat. Am I correct so far? Do you ever have a problem with the dull coat not wanting to adhere to the acrylics and powders? After watching so many of your video's I want to try this myself, just hate to bugger up a decent building by using the wrong spray paint or applying in the wrong order. Thank you for the time you put into producing these great video's!

Hey Zip, thanks for the comments and questions. Yes, that sounds correct. I have not had a problem with the dull coat. I have found that many people think this is difficult watching the video, when they try it they find it goes smooth and is fairly easy to do. Good luck! Would like to see your results, maybe you can post some pics on my facebook.

Nice to see pictures of building, better when you get a video. I find it so strange that cameras have been on phones for over 10 years , yet documentation is still behind. Planning on lighting? I know that is lots of fun. light bleed can be trouble. i did like how one guy used black craft paper to darken inside

It appears you are an artist as well as a craftsman. Very nice. So glad i have doscovered your site. I started building HO train houses and buildings when i was a kid..and even a little bit into my adult years. I used to do stuff like this with them -not at the skill level you portray..but i was having fun decorating them with similar ideas such as you have used..incl the white paint between the bricks, and soot coming down walls, etc. I had the buildings in a box in my mom's basement, but since she moved..no one has yet located the box. I have built a couple buildings since..and will probably continue to do so..but i keep hoping someone will locate that box. That would probably fan the flames of my getting back into this cool hobby. Thank you.

Hello James, I was the same as a young one, 10-11 wanted a model railroad. Just never happened for me. Not till I was older and married with kids did it really kinda start sinkin in that I wanted to do it. By the time my kids were old enough, they had no interest and now, they are all grown and I am working to get something together anyway. I really do like the structures probably more so than the trains! Its very time consuming to build them the way I like but one day, maybe they will be on a layout or something that I can call a model railroad. I havent put out any video's in a long time but have settled again into a new property and may be able to do so. I am planning to make some more video's hope you can catch them to. Thanks so much for the compliments, its my thought anyone can do this if they have the time.

The occasional "new" siding, or roof panel is a nice touch. I built both the Walther prep plants (mines), but switched some of the conveyors. I also like the little electric boxes. I also used extra conveyor sections. It enabled me to have the tiple on the RR siding, while extending to the mountain in the distance. Some prototype conveyor lines are over a mile long in PA. and WV.

Hey, good insight. There are some neat things to add to these, many of them (that I have seen from pictures) have all types of variations. Would be cool to see them in person, like a tour of several of them around PA and WV. It seems to me they really become different animals after living alone for so long. On thing I did, I have never seen and probably would never exist in the real world are air conditioners as seen in the video. It funny to say to, I actually had a comment on it in here somewhere "Get the AC units off that, these mines dont have AC" lol! But hey, first, its not real but should look good. Tony, thanks for the comments and the feedback, always nice to read something with some meat to it.

Hello Ricky, sorry for the late reply, you know, its hard to say. depends on the location maybe? Hard question for me to answer without some background, like period of your layout, general weather in that area. All that if your all about trying to do something "real". In all, for me, I just do what I feel! Do you have any videos that show your layout and how this color might blend with the existing buildings? If I were to shoot from the hip on this, when I think meat packing, I think bland colors, soft browns, greens maybe even a dark yellow. I am from Amarillo, crossroads to major railroads and IBP, meat packers and all of these buildings I have ever seen were really bland "cheap" colors.

@ModelerManMike
@ModelerManMike Жыл бұрын
Hello P, No, generally you wouldn't want to use solvent to glue painted parts, sometimes you can get away with super glue depending on the application. Solvent however melts the pieces together and you wouldn't want any obstruction of the solvent doing its job. This actually was addressed in one of my video's, scraping paint to use solvent.

I purchased the n scale Town and Factory set of 12 shops and one factory. I also purchased a few more kits to round out my small Mayberry-like town. I have 24 DPM n scale kits in just my small town so, your tips will come in very handy. Trying to paint the windows will be fun! (sarcasm) I do like this paint scheme. Due to the small size of my buildings, I will skip the mortar and roof details. That would make me crazy. I thought I might try (at least on the first one) painting the windows and doors first and then, to help cover the overlap, paint the bricks. Most all the buildings will have three paint colors: the wood trim (usually the place for colorful paint), one for the concrete/stone and one for the brick color. I like the idea of that black cardboard inside to block the see through to the other side and to make the windows appear alive. I also bought some Blair Line Shop Signs, #1 & #2 so all my builds will be labeled as to their purpose: Barber Shop, Bakery, Hotel, etc. Thanks again.

Great video Mike - it's good to see how others approach building these models. GREAT A/C UNITS! I also like the weathering effects you get. In case you're interested, consider the following (and if you're not interested, ignore the rest of this post!): I don't know if you're painting the interior black in order to have a very dark background through the windows, or if you're worried about "light leak" through the plastic walls. If it's the former, here's an easier way to make a view block: cut a piece of black construction paper; make the height the same as the inside height to the roof, and make the length 2xL+W/2, where L is the length of the side walls and W is the building width. After the window glazing is in and the roof is attached, slip the paper in from the bottom, with the two ends in the front left and right corners. The paper will make a U shape, with the bottom of the U just touching the back wall. I always glue the walls together before painting. (If you desire a sturdier build, glue a 1/16" square length of styrene into the inside of each corner.) Once the glue is dry, you can prime and paint the entire building. I really like the way you made the front brick a different color from the rest of the building: this was commonly done to save money by using cheaper brick on the sides and back. In your case, this is easily done by applying raw umber washes to the front - keep applying successive washes until you get the color you like. (You can even use a burnt sienna wash in there somewhere to make the brick redder.) If you have dramatically different brick colors, you would paint the entire building in the lighter color, then mask and paint the darker color. I never paint my mortar lines, so you'll need to experiment to see if this is better done before or after you apply the washes. (By the way, I ALWAYS apply several wash coats, even when my brick is all the same color. I find the washes give just enough variation in the brick color to give the brick a natural color variation. If I want a faded sign on my building, I apply a decal over the base color, then apply the washes right over the sign along with the rest of the brick. For a REALLY faded sign, use a sponge to dab some of the base color around the edges - or even in the middle - of the sign to make the sign "disappear.") One final tip: Roomettes make interior kits for buildings of this sort, and they have a kit designed specifically for this DPM kit: it's the Banfield Street #1. These are easy to install and they come complete with LED lighting. You do NOT need a JustPlug lighting system to use these LEDs! Just clip off the connector, add a 640 Ohm resistor, and connect to 12 VDC.

Finally I finished my DPM ! Very inspiring how you did it. I add floor on each level and warm LED light on each level also. I will make the A/C as you did and like very much the way you weathered the roof. Thank you
