Do you know a method of getting the food vent run when there is limited space? Are there alternatives to having the drain that much lower under the foot vent? I am dealing with drain piping running perpendicular to the floor joists and have limited headroom space. Are there other options?

The way I learned this method is to put a 45 on your stack and cut a close piece and put your other 45 on so that they are hub to hub. Find the center of that 45, then find the center of where you are going, subtract the 2 then multiply 1.414 and add the 2 hubs. For example, you have your 2 45s hub to hub on your pipe, you pull a measurement of 8 inches to the center of the second 45, you then find your center of where you want to send the offset, let's say it's 24 inches away, subtract 24-8 and multiply 1.414 + the 2 hubs and you will get your piece.
@BGsPlumbingClass
@BGsPlumbingClass 2 ай бұрын
That's an interesting way of finding your cut piece. There are many different techniques out there for finding the cut piece. I always say to use the method that works best for you- as long as it isn't just guesstimate. I prefer to measure the center to center offset, multiply by 1.414, and subtract the two fitting makeups.

Hot and cold branch sizing is allowed to be based on 75% of the fixture unit value for the individual branch per note 3 on the table 610.3. I noticed you did not size that way which is more complicated. This is a conservative method, but if they look for code minimum, it wouldn't meet that requirement.
@BGsPlumbingClass
@BGsPlumbingClass 2 ай бұрын
I agree with you on the 75% method. However, this video was based on the lectures given for the students that were studying for the journey level exam in California. That exam does not test to that note. Great observation!👍

Great video very informative and definitely helped me out. Only confusing part but I think I figured out is.. when you add 23.5 and 5.5 you get 29 plus that last hose bib would be 30Fu. Which is under 31.5, so I just wanted to clarify if all is correct the whole goal was to calculate it being under 31.5. Other than that, if you just add the LAST hose bib as 2.5 you would get 31.5 exactly. Which is kind of similar to what the example drawing on UPC 2021 page 146 has, HB-pipe section 33 and 49.

@BGsPlumbingClass
@BGsPlumbingClass 4 ай бұрын
Great question. In this example, the dishwasher is ran as it's own supply. It was done strictly as a sizing example. Much like a dish washer in a commercial situation. In this exercise, I'm also not utilizing the 75% method of supply due to the fact that it was a sample of what the journey level exam uses in the state where I instruct.

At times, I'll take some sand cloth and use that as a pipe wrap to mark out a square cut prior to cutting. The best possible solution is to keep it as square as possible, but that isn't always the case. If you end up out of square, I'd say that the furthest out would be no more that an 1/8th inch.

BG - I'm not a plumber. I'm a lay tenant. I have two questions: A. Moen claims their discontinued 1960 Moen 2215 Single Handle 1225 Cartridge Non-Pressuring-Balance Valve will discharge 10-GPM maximum of hot and cold water @ 120-PSI from the Moen tub-spout and 8-GPM maximum (12.35% less) of hot and cold water @ 120-PSI from the shower-arm (only 2.5-GPM hot and cold from a showerhead rated such). B. Per the 2022 UPC (Section 610.3, Table 610.3, and Appendix A), I made the below Hunter's Curve calculations for our 8-Unit 1906-built but 1960s-1970 upgraded fixtures Apartment: 1. 87.50-WSFUs for 36 Fixtures (8 of which are bathtubs/showers) 2. 87.50-WSFUs converts to 40 GPM (rough estimate) 3. 300-GPH Hot Water Tank C. Is the 10-GPM flow rate correct based on a 40-GPM water supply -- but only for the cold water supply, for up to 4 of the 8 tub-spouts at the same time (10 x 4 - 40-GPM)? D. Is the 8-GPM flow rate incorrect based on the 300-GPH Hot Water Tank -- only 5 of the tub-spouts, only 5 of the shower-arms, or any 5-combination out of 8 (8 X 5 - 40-GPM)? I assumed I can't convert the 4-WSFU assigned to each bathtub/shower into a 4-GPM hot and cold flow rate for each -- correct? Thanks! I hope you can answer my lay (non-plumber) questions.

In many cases, an "eyeball estimation" is acceptible. When running offsets of longer than 4' in an exposed area, using a less forgiving material such as cast iron, a minute of time on a scratch piece of paper or a construction calc app on the phone will save material, time, and inaccurate installation.

Great illustration, thank you! One question for you. How does footnote 3 from Table 610.3 come into play? It is in the CA Plumbing Code which is based on the UPC. I believe this footnote should also be in the UPC. "3 The listed fixture unit values represent their load on the cold-water building supply. The separate cold water and hot water fixture unit value for fixtures having both hot and cold-water connections shall be permitted to be each taken as three-quarter of the listed total value of the fixture."

This video is good but a little misleading...the code states that we are to use the full fixure values listed in the UPC code book to size the cold water supply to the house as well as to size the meter, however, what the video is not telling you is that when sizing individual hot OR cold interior sections of water piping, you indeed can reduce the listed fixture value by 25% for any fixture that has both hot water and cold water going to it. In other words you can multiply the fixture unit by 75%. This can drastically reduce the sizes of different sections of your water system.....And you will not starve any of your fixtures of water by using this method as its in the code book.
@BGsPlumbingClass
@BGsPlumbingClass 9 ай бұрын
You are absolutely correct about the 75%, and on top of that, you could even size according to bathroom groups. The purpose of the video was to go over the basic sizing parameters based on the journeyman exam for the state of California. The exam does not cover the 75% method, which is note 3 in table 610.3 I appreciate the feedback, and thank you for bringing up this additional option.

at 18:35, you show a vent being offset horizontally with long sweep 90s before it gets 6" above the flood level rim. Isn't this a direct violation of the very first part of 905.3? Don't you have to use 45s to offset below flood level rim to keep it within the definition of "vertical"?
@BGsPlumbingClass
@BGsPlumbingClass 11 ай бұрын
That's a great question! So, if structural conditions prohibit vertical means, then an offset using drainage fittings can be used.
