Seems the younglings forget that Simple Minds released a group of cracker albums that no one bought. Even New Gold Dream kind of meandered in the charts. All those amazing shows they played and they finally cracked it, got some $ (Jim bought his wonderful parents a home 1st thing) then really blew it wide open with DYFAM and their audiences doubled at least so fast. What he remembers is the nights driving around the UK in a van, playing to 40 people, growing up in Toryglen with working class parents and a house full of boys. These kids coming at him about being rich lost the plot. They seem to be laying the world's problems at his feet, he saw himself as just a singer in a band that had finally made it. Anyone who thinks he sold out should find some footage of Werchter or other festivals where he put all of himself into it, laid himself out there trying to connect with those way in the back. I watched them climb and was so happy for them that they had finally got there. Once Upon A Time is one of my fav records, it sounds amazing today and there's so much enthusiasm jumping out. Why wouldn't he want everyone in the world to listen?

But on saying that - Jim's voice quality and Mel Gaynor trying to put holes in his drums make this show awesome.

The whole Philadelphia concert, in my opinion, was spoiltt by a very poor stage set up.Background clutter, dudes standing around, shit evgrywhere. Just took much focus away from the bands performing. I mean look at the la la la la la bit. Jim is just surrounded by about 10 muppets with cameras. Stage setup and presentation is important - clutter sux

It is too fast. Mel's drum pattern is unnecessarily busy and Jim's struggling to sing it and keep up. Loses all its atmosphere and majesty. They played it again more recently with a lot more control. Shame as it's an absolute banger when done right. Weird that they didn't spot this themselves as they played it quite a lot on the OUAT tour. They did the same with Hunter and the Hunted and binned it off pretty quickly.

I saw SM in Paris a few weeks before this show. The Silencers were so good that night, I bought their album as soon as I got back to England. Still have it too.

My first gig 17 years old, me and 3 mates travelled from Arbroath. Great music, got hammered with a cheap carry out. I seem to remember the Edinburgh tattoo fireworks going off as we walked back to the B&B............great days 😀😀

Also gotta give them praise because the act they had to follow was Queen the band that is said to have killed the live aid show. Very hard act to follow. But Jim Kerr and Charlie burchill with their frontman guitar duo killed it.

This was a different location than Queen all together, but I get what you’re saying!
@grizzadams211011 күн бұрын
@the_minimalistic_advJim Kerr actually said a few years back.....how do you follow that....as in regard to witnessing Queens performance. The confidence in the band is awesome. To start a monumental show like this with a brand new song being performed for the first time is breathtaking......bordering on arrogance
@tobywankenobi10311 күн бұрын
@@the_minimalistic_adventure yes it was two different stadiums but it’s still the same. Queen preformed once Queen was done. BBC switched to simple minds live in jfk via satellite so they still preformed after them even if it wasn’t the same stadium

I'm on my own with this one as I always felt it was a bit of a messy jam and lacked the cohesiveness of other tracks. Good energy though.
@Markeebee1002 ай бұрын
Sorry it's not good, a pale imitation of Waterfront with no real soul. It's just a generic rocker but miles away from the beautiful atmospheric tunes of the previous albums. There's a reason they never played it again...
