I think you haven't left any pending issue with this zoom. I have it and used it in FX on D700 and D3S but, honestly, it doesn't convince me. As you mentioned, in the corners from 24mm to 35 and with open f stop worse, the corners are very blurry, but too blurry for a lens that is surprisingly sharp in the center. I don't like that at all and neither do the distortion at those wide angle focal lengths, at longer focal lengths it isn't that much of a problem but at wide angle if you end up with straight horizontal lines no automatic correction works. You have to make very artisanal corrections in Photoshop. In conclusion, I replaced it with a 28 and a 50 AI prime lenses, cheaper and almost without distortion. And I was just thinking if I should sell it or keep it this zoom for a future D300 or DX sensor, since as you say I think at least I won't see the blurry edges and the VR for low light conditions works well. I also have the 28-85 f3.5/4.5 AF-D zoom and for a quarter of what the VR costs, you lose some wide angle but although it is a little less contrasty than the G, the sharpness at wide angle in AF-D zoom lens is much superior despite being a older lens. Thank you so match.

Thank you for watching! Yes the distortion at the wide end is strong and definitely not for everyone. I like it for street/reportage etc, or if the subject is in the center. Probably some sample variation too. I also prefer using the AI/AI-S primes when possible, great construction and optics. The 24-85mm is just for convenience. There's also the 24-120mm F4 to consider, bit bigger/heavier but even more versatile and (if you get a good one) very sharp too. If your needs lean towards the wide end, try the 18-35mm G (NOT the D) on FX. That + 50mm + 85mm would be a great kit

Thank you very much for taking the job to make this video since there was no information on multipliers for the 300mm AF-D model. This prime lens It seems to me that it represents the best of this series, the construction is beautiful, the finish with that texture and the sharpness and contrast are very good considering the focal length. Also with an affordable price. I'm definitely going to get that converter, luckily I live in Japan so it's easy to find. In the case of Nikon converters, for this series there is no AF, from what I was able to investigate, only the TC-14B (1.4 X) and the TC-300 and 301 can be used in manual mode. Best regards.
@lensvana
@lensvana 6 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes the construction is really nice on this lens, it's a pleasure to use in the field. I'm guessing there are some great deals on it in Japan. The newer AF-S one is faster to focus, sharper, but with a poor tripod collar and sometimes prone to AF motors failing over time. If you see a great deal on one of those, it's worth considering too considering this older one has to be F/5.6 (effectively F/8 with 1.4x TC) for truly sharp results.

I'm surprised you didn't show weight comparison. Weight is important. I own the Nikon Prostaff P7 10x30 as well as the Zeiss SFL 10x30. If there is an image quality difference, I can't tell. Both are excellent. I paid $160 for the P7 and $1,350 for the SFL. I also own the Nikon Monarch M7 8x42. I highly recommend both of these Nikon binoculars.

The lens looks great. I just bought one online, barely used; arriving in a few days. The reviews are good and the prices are good. I will be using it on my D500, which has a menu option to turn off the VR. Whilst I own a Nikon 18-200 zoom, the extra width will help with landscapes and buildings and feature studies. As with any lens, the build should be fine as I am careful with all gear. Thanks for posting. 👍😎🇳🇿✨

With extension tubes, that 300 works well as quasi macro (butterflies, wasps, bees, small reptiles). I use it a lot. Another "cheap" alternative is the Nikkor 500 f4 Ai-P, it's completely manual, but delivers all the benefits of a 500 f4 at a ridiculous price. It was the last of the large Ais ED designs (later replaced by the AF-i version), so it's a hair above the 600 f4 and 400 3,5 Ais ED (the 500 f4 Ai-P - also 800 f5.6 Ais ED _ have 3 ED glasses , all the others only 2) The 400 f3.5 Ai ED is another favorite in birding, both works fine with tc1.4x , even with the tc301 (2x) you get more than acceptable sharpness The only big task - for some folks _ is learning to focus manually. There are quite a few reviews on the web that show the results that can be achieved with those classics. The quality-price ratio is far from the typical telezoom (150-600 ish)
@lensvana
@lensvana 11 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing! Do you mean the 500 F4 AI-S P? I see it selling anywhere from $370-$1000 on eBay. Should be noted that used prices for a used Sigma or Tamron 150-600mm continue to come down, so those are becoming very viable "budget" solutions now too (plus you get AF and VR). I really like my AI/AI-S lenses, but don't like focusing them on the tiny DSLR viewfinder

Just got a D700 yesterday and it's in rough shape. The memory card door is broken (needs replacement), the grip near the AF is gone, and all the grips on the sides needs replacing as they are coming off. Some guy had it in his storage for 7 years, never touched it. We slapped some AA's into the battery grip and it came to life like nothing. All for $150. Sure, it'll need some serious DIY TLC, but it was a deal I couldn't pass up.

This will probably sound hilarious but I use an old Soviet gas mask pouch for my camera, I made some padding on the inside so the camera doesn't hit on anything because the actual pouch is made of thin material but it's pretty strong, it has a good strap system and it has pockets I store a battery a charger and an extra card, also it has character, it's more interesting than newer pouches.
@lensvana
@lensvana 23 күн бұрын
That's cool! I like these kinds of creative carry solutions. Another option is to go to a local tailor/seamstress and ask them to add in custom interior pockets - but that could easily cost more than the pouch itself

I got the original RX100 in 2012 when in India as the price there was amazing. I then waited a number of years and got the Va version which was far better and then decided on the RX100 Vii when I dropped the VA. I still have to consider those two models as I liked the f1.8 and felt that going to f2.8 just for the extra length was not necessarily the best for me as I liked the better low light performance. I love the camera and always wished that since it was the same size as the RX1 that they could have gone one step more and made it an APC sized sensor and offer two discrete lens say a 24-70 and a 70- 200 or 70-150. I sometimes get a vignetting effect on the photos at 200mm. However, I still love this camera as a travel and shoot and have 6 spare batteries! Loved your comparison.

What is unique to all Sigma camras is that they have very high microcontrasts that almost approach the theoretical resolution. That's why sigma specifies 3 times the resolution for the sensors, even though they are "only" 13 megapixels (on the H) and 3 or 4 on the older models. But just real RGB. With the Quadro only the blue channel has the promised 44mpx. Overall, the quadro has more than 24Mpx, but it's mercilessly sharp. But one thing applies to all Sigma sensors: stay away from the ISO controller. Only the basic setting brings this sharpness.

Recently I bought an old Nikon Coolpix L110 bridge camera from a pawn shop for £40.00 the camera was in what I considered to be good condition the only slight issue was that the lens cap was missing which isn't really an issue to me as in that situation I usually convert an old coffee jar lid to serve as one it looks odd but it works you just have to line the inside rim with PVC tape for a good fit I've seen videos where some people use a combination of paper and pvc tape but I think that looked ugly but that a also works at the time of buying the camera I had no idea of what to look for when buying a second hand camera apart from looking for obvious signs of damage to the camera and also cheak that the camera isn't reliable on using some sort of outdated priority tech in order to work like battery or memory card that is no longer made and thus is hard expensive or Impossible to get on the secondary market as used which would render that new camera as about useful as a fancy paperweight so videos like this are useful to the hobby photographer who wouldn't know the secondary market as well as a professional probably might as they tend to collect way more cameras and accessories than the hobbiest or casual photographer would

Thanks for your review. Nikon makes a Z 24-120mm F4, however, they have never made a 24-105mm for its past FX or Z cameras. I have the FX version, and the Z version is supposed to be stellar quality but is longer and heavier than this z 24-70mm F4. The appeal of the Z 24-70mm F4 is its compact size and light weight compared to longer zoom lenses. (however there is the extremely compact Z 24-50mm kit lens.) Lots of stores in my area have the Z 24-70mm F4 at half price in the used version, so $500 used for this lens seems a good value.

Good comparison of the models. I started with a mint condition second hand IV when I was looking for a pocketable camera with good image quality for skiing. It had to fit into a ski jacket pocket unobtrusively. Then on a whim, the following season I upgraded to a VA. Then on another whim in 2023 I wanted longer reach so upgraded to a VII. The trade-in offer for the VA was not good, so I just kept it. Now the VA is my low light option, the VII is my sports option. Great pair (VA+VII): light; excellent IQ; and convenient. On winter skiing (and summer hiking) holidays this combo is all I need. Notwithstanding the march of the phone camera IQ, I hope they continue this line with two parallel models, one with a fast lens 24-70/f2.8 lens and one with a longer, but slower telephoto lens and both with sensor, AF and other upgrades as technology improves, but I doubt this will is going to happen.
