When building the wall of the room, I had an argument with my boss a few months ago because of the double plate. The boss said that making double plates is a waste of materials and time, and did not allow me to make double plates, saying that a top plate is enough. I insisted on doing it, and had a fierce argument with the boss. I believe that if the double plate is dispensable, the teacher would not teach us to do so in the video. There must be an important reason and role. The Chinese boss wanted to cut corners. In the end, I resigned and did not work with that Chinese boss anymore.

My god, I spent several days thinking about it before I figured out the function of double plate. The teacher actually mentioned it. It was because of my poor English that I didn’t understand what the teacher said. Because I saw that many Chinese people don’t use double plates, I was very surprised. Why did the American teacher teach me to use double plates? Since the teacher said so, there must be a reason. I thought about it for several days before I deduced that its function is to help the top to be pulled horizontally, so as not to crack and increase the strength.

Or you can just use 3 stud corners. They're like 4 dollars per stud, this is only for corners that's how everyone does it in Texas.

Such a great teacher! Appreciate your work. Quick question: can the layout of the header above the window sit right on the jack studs and cripple studs be above the header? Would that allow you to transfer the cripple layout lines to the top plate easier? Thank you again!

Newbie question: I want to finish my basement and already had 2 rooms built professionally. The basement was poured in these yellow foam 'forms' which many have told me to sheetrock to. However they're not strait full of bumps and what-not so the 2 rooms I had done I told them to space a couple inches out and do 'free-standing' conventional walls. I would assume I do not need any insulation in the basement right? Also there's a beam in the basement overhead held by these steel 'adjusters' one of which I had them enclose into a wall when the 2 rooms were built. I hope these never need adjusting because I was planning on swallowing a few more of them into some walls is that okay or 'to code' ??

I'm surprised that there isn't a variant where instead of doubling side by side, the boards are stacked. This would allow better insulation, and the boards could be formed into a single mechanical unit by gluing the edges and using structural sheathing on the outside. Then the cripples could be toe nailed to the header.
@ConstructionEdАй бұрын
That sounds like a box header
@richdobbs6595Ай бұрын
@@ConstructionEd No, in a box header, there is a box beam with members on four sides of a cavity. That's not what I described. I described two single headers stacked vertically. Probably with glue between them, and then using the structural sheathing to further hold them together.
@stevehdd9929Ай бұрын
The builder on our house used the concrete form boards from the slab for the headers inside the house. I've never seen that before. What are your thoughts?
@ConstructionEdАй бұрын
While I think that process is unacceptable and just plain crappy, I can not come up with something that makes it structurally wrong. You said "inside" the house, so I am thinking that you mean non-load-bearing interior partition walls. In that case, they are really just nailers.
@stevehdd9929Ай бұрын
@ConstructionEd Thank you for the response. They are all the main headers carrying the weight of the home. My main concern is the chemical in concrete that got into the broads. Anyways I'm upset about it, but the roof is already on now, and I'm not sure how big of a deal i want to make out of it.
@ConstructionEdАй бұрын
I think you are right for being a bit pissed, that is just shoddy work. Is this a production builder. I am assuming there is no insulation in the header since they were field built. What state are you in.
@stevehdd9929Ай бұрын
@ConstructionEd I'm in Oklahoma. The home is being built by cherokee nation, so it's not exactly a custom home. However, we still have to pay for the home, and it's on our own land. It's a little different, and we didn't hire the contractor. Their is an inspector that works directly for cherokee nation, but I don't feel like his heart is in it or wants to fuss much at the contractor.
@ConstructionEdАй бұрын
I understand, I have a friend who does a lot of work on a couple of the Sioux reservations. If you are still at the framing stage, you can certainly wash the headers to get rid of the concrete dust on the surface. Once the wall is sealed up, I personally would not worry much about it.
@richdobbs6595Ай бұрын
I'm curious why you didn't show connecting the interior wall to the O.C. stud, and then using drywall clips. Isn't that both the stronger and most energy efficient way to join walls? Of course that drives rooms to be even increments in your stud spacing.
@ConstructionEdАй бұрын
We personally are not a fan of the drywall clips, we talk about them on one of the lessons more to cover the available options. But that being said you could use an O.C. common stud as part of your connection solution, but you will rarely find the wall lands right where your commons are.
@richdobbs6595Ай бұрын
@@ConstructionEd Interior walls do fall on OC common studs if you design for it. And you've got 4 inches of leeway on how they line up. I'll check your video about drywall clips. They earn good marks from people trying to improve cavity insulation, but I'll be using a lot of external insulation, so thermal bridging in the cavity doesn't have a lot of impact for highly insulated walls.

I'm not really sure where this guy learned how to frame houses. His explainations of how to connect corners and interior wall is so far off it's rediculous. First of all, outside corners are simple. On tne receiving wall, nail two studs together in the shape of an 'L' and position it with the stud that's nailed facing the inrsecting wall, creating a 5" surface that you nail the end stud of tje second wall to. With the interior walls, you nail three studs together fodming a 'U' which when placed it the receiving wall, creates a 6 1/2" surface to be able to nail the intersecting wall. Much simpler than he makes it. Plus, those clips for the sheetrock in yje corners don't work. First of all, there isn't enough support. Second issue is the supports cost more than a stud, and the 'R' value loss he claims is mis-stated. Tbe studs also have a 'R' value, they are cellulose.
@ConstructionEdАй бұрын
I'm sorry you're not satisfied with the framing lesson. I appreciate your time in sharing your thoughts on the video. We were not trying to say that you should use a clips - simply stating that they are available. I do have to disagree with you on the R value comment, YES studs do have an insulating quality of R1 per inch - but you can and should choose a better insulation if you can. And arguably, the new code of IECC 2021 requires more energy-efficient framing.
@5400bowenАй бұрын
And why not compress thr insulation? Because insulation primarily just assures dead air space, one of the best insulators. And the cheapest. My sevond view of one of your bideos. You guys are outstanding, above and beyond 99.9% of all construction people
