The operative word is "need". Alvin uses multiple computers for various tasks, but is capable of being safely operated manually without a computer.

Alvin is amazing, I didn't know it was still in use. The current technology level is awesome, so much safety built in with analogue controls to be sure it works. The people who built Titan should have learned from this.

It's sad how I love anything and everything mechanical to the point of furnishing a house completely with something thrown away I fixed yet never asked my father who's been on dives in ALVIN and others over a half century. Another sad thing are the roughly 5,200 cigarette butts I've picked up just on the frontage to the state highway my house of 7 months among other trash. At least you'd think about the lake or forest fires before throwing a lit or just a butt that takes too long to decompose. Apologies for running off subject but I love nature and the oceans as much as my father. Wish him well from yet another cancer related surgery. Thanks. Edit: This is exactly who you'd want building and piloting what has a remarkable amount of attention now and to me is shocking.

This is what I would expect for a $250k ticket…not the surplus store DIY special. I think if the Titan victims had seen this video - they’d have thought twice before getting into that sinking cigar tube. What is super sad is that Hamish Harding went down to the deepest point in the ocean with Victor Vescovo in that magnificent sub “Limiting Factor”, and still fell for the assurances fed by Ocean Gate’s late CEO.

Will someone tell me why a billionaire wouldn't rent this marvel to get down into the abyss? I mean.... You have this, you have the Limiting Factor submersible which looks very good (if still available), and (unless I am mistaken), you have those great Russian submersibles for rent. So. If money is not a concern.... why not use one of those?

Ever since I focused on the whole Titan debacle, I wondered what would I have done if I were one of the few who could have went down there, before this happened? I have no doubt once I heard the hull was made of carbon fiber, I would have had questions, and my doubts. Then if I saw some of the other submarines like Alvin, I would really have my doubts. At that point, I would seek out expert advice.

THIS is how an engineer should discuss his work. THIS is how engineers should engineer innovation within the bounds of the rulebook. Stockton Rush was an engineer, but flaunted his LG controller & completely digital interface housed within his uncertified sub. World of difference.

Although Alvin is some 60 or so years old, almost every component, including the pressure hull, has been upgraded/replaced at some point. Very few if any components are original to the early '60s version. A true ship of Theseus.

Alvin is a masterpiece of engineering. I didn't know anything about the construction details of how a deep-sea submersible should be built to safely operate year after year at Titanic-type depths and pressures before the Ocean Gate incident. The deep sea community knew exactly how Titan was constructed....maybe it's not their job to save the world, but I am wondering why they didn't speak up more vigorously to condemn the shoddy vehicle, especially when they knew it was going to be used to carry tourists down to the Titanic?
@Laminar-Flow
@Laminar-Flow Жыл бұрын
They literally did speak up. A consortium of engineers came forward. It was in the news at the time as well. There was also a whistleblower who was one of the main consulting engineers on the project. Google it. It’s not hard to find. What allowed them to operate the uncertified sub with tourists was the fact that they did so in international waters where no governing body has jurisdiction.
@Laminar-Flow
@Laminar-Flow Жыл бұрын
@@Cleatus46 During the DAYS leading up to the incident? What are you talking about? Engineering a submersible takes years. Testing it takes years. This titan sub was used over 50x before the incident. Will Kohnen, chairman of the peer-review engineering group Marine Technology Society penned a letter to the CEO in 2018 co-signed by over 20 engineers asking oceangate to stop what they were doing and certify the sub (pending more testing. They warned about the use of a filament wound carbon fiber hull because in engineering, carbon is not what you use in repeated stress-strain/pressurization-depressurization situations. David Lockridge, an engineer, was the former pilot of the sub and was fired when he raised concerns about the hulls integrity. They sued him for leaking confidential info. Lol. Many contracted engineers also blew the whistle on the project. You don’t just wait for years after construction to blow the whistle in engineering a project like this. Do your research and you’ll realize that plenty of actual engineers with experience in submersibles came out publicly. Thus, everyone working at the company as an engineer was for the most part hired out of college as non PE’s (not having worked under a certified engineer for 3 years) and did not have the chance to speak out about anything because of a lack of experience with submersibles. Or, they feared for their jobs like Lockridge. Also, like I said, the sub was launched in international waters where no governing body can stop them. This is the retarded CEO’s fault, who I might add had an engineering degree but did not know how to use it.
