I was told that if I am hooking my house up to the 50AMP receptacle, since it does not have GFCI, I do not need to float the neutral when hooking this up to my house. Another electrician also told me I can leave it as bonded neutral. But then I have seen other electrician say you need to float the neutral...... There are millions and millions of people who plug their bonded nuetral gens into their homes and have zero issues though.

one more thing: the user manual for this sucks. There is an oil filter on it (most gens do not have an oil filter). The manual makes no mention of it and I didn't find out about it until I did my first oil change. Overall it seems like a great unit, though I have yet to hook it up to my house.

I have been reading a lot about this gen (I have one). Many people say a 20lb propane tank will not be enough to power it, because it doesn't have enough surface area and will freeze and loose vapor pressure to quick (killing the gen). Yet I have run mine on a 20 lb propane tank for 5 hours (during breakin period, varying from 0 load to 50%), and there was still enough propane left in the tank to keep running. I've also read about many others who use a 20 lb propane tank. Although, I can see you having issues with a small propane tank during very cold weather, which is why I have 25 gallons of non-ethanol fuel as backup; I primarily want to run it on propane, it's just so much easier and less maintenance. I am just waiting for an electrician to hook up the necessary stuff to let me power my home with this.

Thanks for the video. I was looking for this exact info! This only affects the 14-50R right? everything else is still ground/neutral bonded?

The oil drains out of mine so slowly, and i have the dipstick out.... The bolt you screwed in on the other side....thats the oil filter on my unit (same model). Am i supposed to take that out before draining oil? Manual says nothung about that...

Thanks for the heads up on the "BREAK-IN" period. From page 21 of the User Manual. BREAK-IN PERIOD For proper break-in, do not exceed 50% of the rated running watts during the first five hours of operation. Use supplied oil until first recommend oil change. Do not use full synthetic oil during break in period. Full synthetic oil may prevent proper breaking and seating of the piston rings. Vary the load occasionally to allow stator windings to heat and cool and help seat the piston rings.

Why choose this one?
@silverspork86Күн бұрын
it's one of the most powerful inverter gens on the market. And if you are wanting to power sensitive electronics like high efficiency furnaces, computers, etc, you want an inverter gen.

@silverspork86 I just went with the 7600/10000 peak open frame Westinghouse incerter generator. It's half the cost. Did I blow it?
@silverspork86Күн бұрын
Depends on what you want to power. For instance, high efficiency furnaces want a THD of less than 5%. Most open frames can't hit this. @@bob_frazier

Tell us more about the Oil Filter - Did you take it out? Is it disposable or is it a built in screen filter?
@DrewDoesStuff-yt18 күн бұрын
@VanHook-x1i mentions below the oil change video goes into further depth kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYCsd3ShjbSeftE . The filter is a screen type like in the Genmax units. It can be cleaned. Replacement prices from Westinghouse have been less than $5, but have not been in stock the times I've checked.
@wesr228Ай бұрын
Man... I'm not sure why Westinghouse had to eff this up so badly, and make it incredibly complicated for novice users. There large, open frame generators are floating neutrals, but on this one, one obviously designed to be plunged into a home electrical system, they make it a 87 step process??? What a bunch of Aholes.
@efraingonzalez4408Ай бұрын
I’m new to this and not an electrician, what is the purpose for this?
@DrewDoesStuff-ytАй бұрын
It is for safety when you directly connect your generator to your home or other panel box with an interlock connection or transfer switch. Its code that your home wiring can only have one neutral and ground bonding location. In most homes, that occurs in the main panel box. If you have multiple bonded locations, there is a chance that your ground can carry current. Since many appliances and electrical devices have grounded frames, you could get electrocuted if this scenario played out in a bad way. It also could fry some electronics if power was sent into its grounding wiring. If you are only using the generator to run extension cords directly to your devices, you can keep the internal bond connected.
@Redneck_Ed8 күн бұрын
@@DrewDoesStuff-yt There are many appliances that have neutral (white) and ground (green) bonded together, so doesn't that mean that by default neutral and ground are bonded together at multiple points throughout the house (unless you go around and unplug everything)? I thought the purpose of polarized plugs was to ensure that hot (black) was always consistent and never accidentally connected to neutral (white) in order to avoid the shock or electrocution you mention. I'm not really clear on how unbonding the generator makes the setup safer.

Hey man really helpful videos. I just got mine last week and planing on doing the break in and floating the neutral this week. I have been thinking about using the parallel banana plugs to do a floating/bonded neutral jumper. Replacing the top red plug with a green one and wiring it so that when the jumper is hooked up to the top and mid connectors the neutral is bonded.
@DrewDoesStuff-ytАй бұрын
That is a good way to do it if it works for you. I have also seen people use a 120v standard cord end (male repair part) and just jumper the neutral to the ground lug inside the plug end to have a removable bond plug. Part I'm referencing: www.homedepot.com/p/Leviton-15-Amp-125-Volt-Rubber-Grounding-Plug-R70-515PR-00R/301410802 I may make a video on how to do this later. I'm sure their may be others around as well. Thanks for watching and the feedback.

So is it always best to have a floating neutral on the generator when your generator is hooked up to a 50A cable to the main panel where the neutral is bonded?
@martinibanez1279Ай бұрын
Yes, the ground and neutral should be bonded together in one part of the whole circuit. In a home circuit case that bond should already be made at the main panel.
@silverspork86Күн бұрын
That is what I have summized from a lot of reading. Leaving it as bonded neutral is a code violation (moreso than a safety issue, millions of people hook up bonded neutral gens to their houses) because it creates two bonded neutral points in the system, when there is only supposed to be 1. Then again, I have had two master electricians tell me I am okay to leave mine as bonded neutral when hooking it up to power my home system....
@Ozzie4Para2 ай бұрын
Those enclosed generators are sweet but I can't help but to wonder that enclosure has to make the engines run warmer than open framed types.
@DrewDoesStuff-ytАй бұрын
I would imagine they do, but most of them have larger blowers/fans and are vented to keep them cool. This unit and many other larger inverters have the fan / hot air exhaust out near the engines exhaust. I have a Duromax XP9000iH that works the same with the exhaust heat coming out near the engine's exhaust.
