Four ships vanish without trace in the same area and at the same time, whilst a fifth washes ashore with no crew or lifeboats remaining on board. The accepted rule of abandoning ship is to only do so when certain that she's absolutely going to sink, because one's ship is invariably safer than a tiny open lifeboat! It can only be assumed that the four lost ships were sunk by the hurricane and terrible sea state capsizing them. This would explain the total absence of bodies, lifeboats or debris from any wrecks. A capsized ship sinking would keep her deck items with her as it would stay with the wreck to the sea bed.
@Maritime_History18 күн бұрын
I too agree that it was most likely the hurricanes that caused the ships to sink (and even possibly rogue waves).
@nigelmorroll334319 күн бұрын
I guess unless, by chance, someone finds the ships wreak on the sea bed it'll stay a mystery.

Finding the wreck of Hewitt would certainly help researchers discover what ultimately caused her to sink.

I wonder if there was some creedence to the pirate theory. As I remember the story the Carroll A Deering was sighted by a lighthouse keeper. Shortly thereafter a speeding blacked out ship was seen. The keeper tried to contact the mystery ship was ignored him and sped by. The Deering probably didn't have much cargo but if the other two ships and the Hewitt did, it may explain why just the Deerings crew went missing where both ships AND crew went missing in the other cases
@Maritime_History20 күн бұрын
Although that is a thought-provoking theory, no suspected pirates were ever caught.

I'm afraid I have never heard of that ship. It also looks like no information about that ship exists online. Do you know more about that ship (general characteristics, year of construction, commissioning and sinking)?
@ralphdavey730323 күн бұрын
My theory for consideration. She struck a forgotten or unknown sea mine that was placed in WW1, and which broke free after 3 years. If this happened the sinking would have been quick too, so no time for distress calls. After both WW1 and WW2 sea mines were found or caused issues for many years. The collision theory is unlickly as no distress signals were sent. These would have been sent while crew transfers happened in that theory. My view is bad wave in the storm and it just went down.
@Maritime_History22 күн бұрын
Interesting theory. I didn't think about that one. Thanks for sharing. As for the collision theory, I do agree that Hewitt did not collide with Carroll A. Deering since no evidence of a collision was found onboard the schooner after it washed ashore without its crew. However, I still do believe that there could have been a possibility that Hewitt collided with one of the other ships that had gone missing, as discussed in the video. Despite that, I too believe that the most likely cause of the disappearance was that Hewitt was struck by a rogue wave during the hurricanes, causing the ship to sink within seconds. Anyways, thank you for watching and leaving your theory!
@aiiixiii577319 күн бұрын
Only issue with that is unless the Americans planted it I don’t see why or how mines could be on the other side of the Atlantic, and as for the collision thing I have another possibility. You see when Britannic when she hit the mine the explosion damaged her Marconi system and made it so she couldn’t see any response to their distress call. It’s not unlikely if the ship hit the right spot she could have damaged her systems that would allow her to send transmission, and as for the communication between the two ships considering they would be close enough they could have just called out orders to the small lifeboats from the bridge.

@CharlesGabrielleVidanes-xt3ww28 күн бұрын
I forgot to mention that Rms Carpathia told Ivernia and Saxonia that she had a medal for rescuing the Titanic’s survivors. However the Ivernia and Saxonia apologized for making fun of her because Carpathia was her Half Sister. So Carpathia agreed their apology and Ivernia, Saxonia and Carpathia became sisters again until WW1 when Ivernia and Carpathia were sunk leaving the Saxonia alone to complete her voyage until it’s scrapping. Pretty cool huh? 😄
