It is likely to be the same problem but I can't be certain. The relay is cheap so it's worth a try. I'm not familiar with the 528 but a quick look on the internet suggests it may be alongside the fusebox behind the glove box. Also, there may be 2 fuel pumps as explained in the video. It was the relay for the primer pump in the tank that was causing my problem. Best to visit a BMW dealership and ask at the services counter where it can be found when you go to buy one. Good luck!

You don't need any special tools. It's the relay for the fuel tank primer pump that I changed to fix this. You can buy one from a BMW dealership.

It fixed by replacing the relay! After a few attempts starting the car it would eventually run, but very rich on fuel I found out later when I replaced the relay. Thank you for your information to the solution. Now I could drive home safely from Italy to the Netherlands.

Garages being clueless with this seems to be a common problem here! I find this really surprising because I wouldn’t really describe myself as a car mechanic but didn’t find the solution too difficult to fathom. Maybe it’s because I’m a Christian and God helps me with my problems great and small! Regarding your car, I recommend you change the relay anyway. It's cheap and easy to do yourself as you can see from this video - I’m very confident it will solve your start up problem. It might fix your rough running issue too but I’m less confident that it will as this didn't happen with mine. This is more likely to be an ignition problem with a degrading coil pack. They are about £60 each so it would be good to get a diagnostics check on them at your garage/RAC/AA as this will confirm it and even tell which one is failing. Mine was the MK2 model from 2011 onwards (also know as the F20) and was petrol. Diesel engines require much higher injection pressure and so the system will be different. It may still have a relay fault, though I'm not familiar with the diesel version - sorry.

I am in a dispute now with the garage wanting me to charge a fortune (2000) for new timing and charging me loads for a wrong diagnostic as well. It was a £16 fix. I did suspect the fuel system but you helped pointing me in the right direction. Thank you so much for this vid.

To be honest mine just spluttered briefly and then always cut out. The previous year we did have a different problem with it running rough but not cutting out completely - I changed all 4 coil packs and that was solved. I suppose it is possible that as your relay is beginning to fail it could be clicking in and out and so not providing sufficient fuel flow for smooth running? Or you may have both problems (which seem to occur about the same time!).

Ha ha! Initially my thoughts too - but it really is the main power unit. See my response to whitmetro99's comment about 1 month ago. Also, contributions in my thread that starts "There has been some debate here about whether the engine I found on the beach was the main power unit or just for the generator?" 2 months ago are worth a read. My thoughts were exactly the same after finding the spec for the Deutz SBV 8M 628 on the internet - like you I felt it just didn't look big enough! However, it is. My mistake was to try to compare it with the size of my 2lt car engine. Trouble is, cubic volume is very hard for us to perceive in our heads because of the 3 dimensional aspect of it. Double the side length to a cube of 20cm width and it occupies a volume of 2 cubed = 8 litres (Large American muscle car V8 size) A cube of width 30cm = volume of 3 cubed = 27 litres (already up to the size of the Spitfire's Rolls Royce Merlin engine) A cube of width 40cm = volume of 4 cubed = 64 litres A cube of width 50cm = volume of 5 cubed = 125 litres which way more than we need for the Mülheim! In fact, the cubed root of 101,334 is just under 47 so we only need a volume equivalent of a cube of side length 47cm. I think part of the problem in accepting this seemingly huge engine capacity is that I used a GoPro to film it with a wide angled lens. This always makes things look smaller and further away than they actually are. This is especially true when there's no other perceivable dimensions for reference. If you google 'Deutz SBV 8M 628' you can find several pictures of ones for sale with backgrounds that give a better sense of scale. Interesting though it is I agree it's an awful mess - I would like to think that it will be cleared up one day. Maybe the authorities think its cheaper for the sea to do it though its taking a long time!
