Spurn Point was actually much more interesting years ago before it became trendy and a new "centre" was introduced. Back in the day the Point was occupied by a close-knit group of households that sustained the lifeboat and lighthouse and it was a truly wild, isolated and largely unvisited place...However, go back centuries and it was not a point, but an true island that came to be inhabited by a lone hermit called Peter, who later acquired the title `Peter At Sea'.

I can still remember cycling from Grimsby to Spurn Point via the old Paddle Steamers in 1967 when I was 10 year olds with my older brother and sister an younger brother and sister. Grimsby to New Holland then over on the Paddle Steamer to Hull, then onward to Spurn Point. We camped in a farmers field mid way between Spurn Point and the first village on the way back, then set off for Hull and the return Ferry Ride to New Holland and the final cycle ride back to Grimsby. Happy Memories from SIXTY Years ago.

Has a trip here in the summer of 2022. It was a real trip down memory lane for me as, when I was young my parents used to take me and my sisters to Southleigh caravan park ( now a chalet park) for many years. Visited all the places we used to go as kids. Done of it hasn’t changed at all from the sixties. Happy memories

The design on what looked like a bent needle is a stylised jet engine. I wonder if the needle part is representing flying through the eye of a needle. No the other straight on. Oh and the other right(left) too. Take care stay safe.
@campervanhygge8 ай бұрын
Hi there. You prompted me to do a bit more research and you are right. It is based on a needle with the relief representing a jet engine. The sculpture of Frank Whittle as a visionary is based on a painting by Rod Lovesey. Thank you for watching. Stay safe and enjoy your travels.👍😀
