Inches??? Maybe one day the USA might catch up with the other 96% of the world and start using the metric system.
@CorbinDunn
@CorbinDunn 14 күн бұрын
Oh, I fully agree! I wish I would have used inches as a child; at this point it is harder for me to switch to metric. The system is also highly against us here: if you go to the hardware store there will be a huge assortment of "standard" size bolts/nuts, but very few metric, and the metric cost twice as much. Totally stupid system.

Very cool. I dig it. I'd probably want to chunk-up the shaft diameter, and maybe add some minor tapers to get more side-to-side articulation. Your kiddo break one yet?
@CorbinDunn
@CorbinDunn 17 күн бұрын
I made seven for his party, and two were redwood. The redwood is super soft, and the madness of a bunch of 6 year old boys quickly broke one. The other ones have been holding up so far (cherry, which is much harder), but I did some test twist-breaking on a sample and they can still be broken. My first tests allowed 360 degrees of movement...which would prevent breakage from force via twisting, but it didn't feel "real" to have the joints do that, so I limited the movement with an oval-shaped ball. Pulling length-wise can't be broken; the wood is super strong in that direction with-the-grain. I think the joints will last as long as the PLA 3d printed toys. So yeah! I think v2 should be a thicker shaft, and a scale pattern on top. I just ran out of time!

Fusion version ?
@CorbinDunn
@CorbinDunn 17 күн бұрын
Fusion isn't so great at v-carves; Vectric VCarve is just so much better at them! That's the main reason I setup the project in Vectric rather than Fusion. Fusion can do VCarves..and I may try them in the future, but it does have limitations, but I might be able to figure out how to do creative work arounds for those issues.
@CorbinDunn
@CorbinDunn 17 күн бұрын
...but you can take the STL and import it into Fusion and do toolpaths there; I have a video on how to setup tabs, which isn't too hard. The VCarve inlay is the hard part, as it is not flat, but projected onto the doubly curved surface.

I'm not very familiar with openbuilds CNC; does it use Mach 4? I did start with Avid's version of Mach 4, but there isn't any reason that you all couldn't use that version and just manually set up the pins and controls. Avid provides a wizard to do most the setup for their machines, but it is customizable.

Hah! I'm pretty sure you can do some of this same stuff in VCarve; doing the dovetail cutouts might be a bit tricky to figure out, but I think if you draw vectors for the bit to follow at the full depth (board thickness) it would work fine; the vectors would need to extend in front of and back behind the piece to avoid the chipout.

Yeah! I am currently making a 3d snake out of wood, with flexible joints; I have some previews of it on Instagram. I'd say it definitely counts as an "organic shape", and it requires two sided machining to get it done right. I definitely could do a video on the CAM for it; I machined a lot of the middle sections multiple times to make a bunch of snakes, so I really nailed down an optimized toolpath (for clean cuts, not necessarily for speed). Going forward, I plan to do more furniture type stuff with complex curves.

@@BipinBabu-k4c Sure! I think the main thing for food safety is to use a food safe finish; something without drying agents. Most products by "Walrus Oil" are great to use. Epoxy isn't great, as it can chip and be ingested...and while it should be inert, it isn't "food safe".

when I downloaded it today, I got a f3z file which, when I tried loading into fusion360, gave an error about single-user storage vs team storage. I solved it by unzipping the f3z file (using unzip, but you have to change the file extension) and loading the f3d file instead. Hopefully, that's just a user error. My spindle is a 65mm diameter spindle with 4" collector hose. Not one of your existing stl sizes. Thanks either way. If the shoe is as thoroughly thought out as the video, I'll be very happy. nice work
@CorbinDunn
@CorbinDunn 29 күн бұрын
Hi Miles - I'd recommend upgrading to team storage, it'll give you more features in Fusion, and I hear they are eventually going to force all users to move to teams (even if you are a single user, like me). I specifically use one feature called "Configurations", which allow it to switch between different settings being shown. I do mention this in the download, but it is easy to miss. I have no idea how the file will behave by extracting out the .f3d file, so proceed at your own caution! But yeah, you should be able to set the parameters for the spindle size you have. The only issue I've seen people have with small spindles is the back of the shoe hitting the gantry, as that size is rather fixed. I know some people have fixed it by editing the file. Best of luck!
