What about changing the cd/rw drive ? My 2006 Mac Mini sounds like a wash machine every time I played a game on it at first. I am not sure if that was the hard drive or the cd. I have to wait until I buy another cinema display next week. The cinema display stopped working this past Saturday. I use the Mac Mini to play my older games like Diablo2.

Because of the 1.5mb/SATA I speed issue I wouldn't actually recommend upgrading to an SSD (especially because most SSDs are unsupported and ordering from that company is expensive if you're abroad)... go with a modern 1tb hard drive and use the pin connector to set it to SATA 1 speeds...

Well i have SSD in my iMac G3 and it works just fine. It helps with power consuption, heat problem and noise.

SSD’s have been fantastic upgrades to all my G3 and G5 macs. My G3 iBooks and iMacs are much faster and silent. A big bonus is the extended battery life on the iBooks. The refurbished batteries now give me over 8 hours usage on the iBooks. The G5 iMac is tricky. I tried 3 different SSDs until I got one that worked. But it does work great.

I pulled out my old G5 iMac the other day which has identical specs, 2.1Ghz and 2.5GB ram and it was actually mostly usable for the web outside of KZbin. I was quite surprised. I may go ahead and do the SSD/Ram upgrades and put it to use for some basic tasks. Where did you find the 4GB RAM stick? I can't seem to find one anywhere.

What is the improvements of using a CF card direct with the IDE Port with a simple Single CF-> IDE Adaptor? Something like a 1000X 64 or 128 GB CF Card from SanDisk. With a 100X CF Card on a Powerbook G3/G4, it just beats the mechanical hard drive and anything faster than that blows the hard drive out of the water; a 75X CF Card is about equal in speed to a mechanical hard drive.

If you have a "late 2005" iMac G5 with iSight Camera, then you should be able to upgrade to 4GB of DDR2 Ram. If you have a "Ambient Light Sensor" iMac G5 from May 2005 thru October 2005, then 2GB of DDR is the known limit.

Congratulations on the recent purchase of your iMac G5. They are great machines. To get up and running online I highly suggest using InterWebPPC as your browser. It's a PowerPC enthusiast supported custom browser based on TenFourFox which in turn is based on Firefox. Yes, that is correct. The last generation of PowerPC based iMac G5's, Power Mac G5's, and PowerBook G4's all used DDR2.

It's nice to see PowerPC processors getting some love! If possible, try to avoid tilting the pry tool while it's briefly/accidentally inserted too far as you can press against the internal electronics such as the RAM. You'd want to pull it back most of the way and then tilt it. I know these cases are a PITA so it's hard to be perfect though and you had the extra challenge of introducing the camera, so had limited places to put your hands.🙂

@@matsauc2787 sorry to report, I was NOT able to get a 2GB Dimm to work. Most likely because I could only find a registered ECC dimm. I will try searching for non registered/ecc ram and test again if such a thing was made. Sorry for the delay in responding.

pretty sweet ill be getting one of these and putting morph os on it :) or fienix os atm i have two g5s one is a 2.3ghz dc with 16 gb ram and ati x1900 xtx (gddr4 model) was a pain modding and flashing the rom . and even though the card has 512mb i can only use 256 yet i still have the fastest mac osx gpu you can get my other g5 is a dc 2ghz with 6gb and 6600 also an imac g4 lamp . severa other retro computers too . emac 1.25 ghz

Thank you for this guide. I installed a m.sata in my G4 Mini and it’s so trippy booting into OS9 and *not* hearing a mechanical hard drive. Even Leopard is fairly usable with the SSD

From what I can see in the video, I bet he's using Amazon item B01GRMUQRG to adapt to an mSATA SSD. There's also B07Z67GX6W which is what I ordered since I have a M.2 SATA SSD (non NVMe) laying around and just need an adapter.

Mac OS 9 does not work natively on these machines. There are workarounds though to install Mac OS 9, so it can be done.
