I'm from Panamá. The winter league is really struggling because there's no advertising for it. Our soccer league is also struggling with low attendance, so there's a lack of support for local teams. Baseball is still king when it comes to FEDEBEIS as most stadiums sell out for the playoffs there. The youth tournament is also very popular.

Fresh off of winning the recent Premier 12 championship, the popularity of baseball is at its all time high. International baseball competition is probably the only thing that can unite the entire country when most of the time the island is heavily divided politically.

German here, I play in the second lowest division in here the Landesliga. The leagues are well organized, the players really do it for the fun and the atmosphere is great. But our sport isn't well known, if I tell someone here that I play baseball they assume I mean basketball or American football. One of the biggest reasons why young people know it, is Wii-Sports.

Maybe because with the marlins there is no good baseball here besides international events. But i see people with soccer team and the venezuelan national team jeresys than baseball

The implementation of the Draft to Puerto Rico is the main reason for the decline. That have a direct impact on Puerto Rico baseball player production. Boxing is a big sport along with basketball among others. That call the attention of younger guys. Also believe it or not if you ask to guys in the street they will rather be a reggaeton artist instead of an athlete.

In the case of Mexico, long ago baseball was number one, but fútbol ⚽ usurped that position with two World Cups in '70 and '86, but the border and coastal states have always been loyal to baseball.

In Czech Republic the top team sports are football and ice-hockey as the clear top-2, then volleyball, basketball, floorball and handball, and then the smaller less-known sports such as rugby, american football, futsal, lacrosse, softball and then baseball. So if baseball can get anywhere close to the top-6 in the country, it would be awesome, but we are still pretty far away from that

Basketball is the most popular sport in Puerto Rico, the local basketball league has way better ratings than the LBPRC same goes for NBA vs MLB, but Baseball is definitely second, it’s far ahead of both soccer and volleyball in popularity
@calebrivera89137 сағат бұрын
As for the reason I really don’t know, my guess would be basketball is much more accesible with you just needing a ball, there are courts all over, the BSN is also just a much more entertaining product than the LBPRC it’s not even close

One thing baseball does have in favor is the national team, it unites the country like no other
@stephanruiz-zink81203 сағат бұрын
One thing that could bring baseball back to number one is the success of the national program. Team Rubio is usually very strong and consists ~mostly~ of Puerto Ricans from the island. The basketball team is made of mostly Americans with no strong cultural connection to PR. Even in interviews, the PR basketball players are speaking in english most of the time. If PR wins a WBC, baseball might return as the sporting king of the island.

Panamanian here, yep baseball is the biggest sport here in Panama locally, football is only big for the national team but almost noone watches the LPF mainly because most of the players and crowd are from lower income neighborhood and sometimes a gang fight might happen. Meanwhile baseball each team represent every province so everyone can root for a team, unlike probeis where the people doesnt feel represented by the teams unlike the national league.

Ratings are OK, the game is perfect ( just don’t bring “the golden bat rule”), attendances is good; the only problem in baseball, is that players are getting way to much money on their contracts, and that raises ticket prices.

In my opinion, down. I’m a longtime fan (mid-70’s). Everything is overpriced with the sport from admission price to having to pay premium price to watch and soon to listen to games. The new rules and rules that are proposed are isolating longtime fans like me. I could live with a two league DH even though I don’t like it. I can’t stand banning the shift and the extra inning free runner. Instead of expanding there should be relocating. Example, I live in Chicago. The White Sox are regional unless they are in contention. By regional I mean the Chicago South Side and south suburbs. That’s just not enough with the Cubs in town. I’m a fan of both. Move the Sox to Nashville, Charlotte, or even Portland. The same could be said of the Rays. Go where the fans will support a team. In the 1980s-early 90’s I was able to go to games ten plus times a season on a modest income. I was in my teens and early 20’s. I could not do that now and I am solid middle class. I could think of better things to spend a couple hundred on. I went to one game in five years and only watched one complete game last season and I didn’t miss it. The sport passed me by as if to say they don’t need my fan base anymore. With the expanded playoffs the regular season should be shorter, maybe 145-150 games. That will keep the game from competing with football extensively. Also, cut down the time between innings. They can charge more for commercials and show less. That will cut down a ton of time.

I completely disagree on 2 points. 1. You showed it yourself. Ratings don't lie. Yankees-Dodgers world series will ALWAYS deliver better ratings than any other matchup. 2. The absolute last thing baseball needs is expansion. Just move the bad franchises like Oakland, Miami, Tampa Bay to cities that want teams...Miami, Tampa bay are two of the four most recent expansion teams, and they both have weak attendance.

Baseball is cooler than ever. Just gotta keep tightening up the games, pick up the pace of play. Baseball has such a natural flow, when the batters don't leave the box after every pitch. A 9 inning game should be 2 hours long, and viewership will skyrocket. Cut the changeover time between innings in half -that's 18 minutes of total downtime shaved off each contest.

As far as expansion I would love if Raleigh got an MLB team. Growing market, far from existing franchises, and it only has one major pro team unlike Nashville and Charlotte which already have two plus MLS. The Hurricanes have drawn well recently and baseball wouldn't overlap much with the hockey season. I think more action could popularize the sport. The 2023 rule changes have made games faster, but strikeouts remain at record levels and balls in play are low. If we start seeing more contact hitting and pitchers going 7+ innings, that would really challenge the "baseball is boring" conception. I don't know how MLB could incentivize that, as there's not a quick fix like the pitch clock. But as a fan it would be more exciting to watch those sorts of games, and records like 3000 hits or 300 wins would be attainable again. Also I'm begging for Manfred to get some national TV deal in place before 2030-ish. The network for Rangers games isn't currently on any streaming service I have, and it's probably blacked out anyway. MLB could gain SO MANY new fans if they could just see games easily. Overall the league is certainly in a better spot than in 2020, but there's potential for a major renaissance.

@Nein1no8 күн бұрын
Baseball still has issues, but it is on an upward trend worldwide. Baseball still needs to be careful, as it can still certainly fumble the momentum. Part of baseball's future needs to be securing not only access to the games for more people to watch it, but also in its development. MLB's current exploitation of the international market absolutely needs to be dismantled (or at least made fair financially) for the long-term benefit of the sport: we simply need more domestic leagues worldwide.
@ShrexyGuy8 күн бұрын
As for being on topic about the video, the A's already had a base in Sacramento. A's and Giants ran central and northern California, that won't be the issue. The issue is their TV market now. Moving out of the bay gives the Giants a massive boost locally, while the A's will admittedly get boosts in Sac and Stockton, which are still large cities admittedly. But we saw it with the Raiders already. Getting their games locally in CA after the move wasn't a struggle, but Oakland and Californians were scorned. We suffered, finally broke a drought, tore down, and moved. Ownership ripped support away from themselves. The A's followed the exact same blueprint. So come their move they'll be watched, but it won't be for them. Just like Mark Brady did with the nation.... yes I'm still scorned and more so after the Mo Pix country rid all the way to an Allegiant takeover
