Good if you mentioned the tools needs given VW need specific tools. I think a M10 spline and 13mm ratchett spanner is needed here. Thanks heaps re the AP vs AN- VW gave me the AN even though i asked the AP had to show them this video before they believed me. What tools needed to het alternator out?

Can you explain reason for this and what symptoms you were having to skim rear drums on amarok please
@willemtreurnicht381816 күн бұрын
So I didn't actually skim the drum, actually just took the edge off. When it developes an edge you can't get drum off as it gets stuch behind the brake shoes... So it helps to be able to set them better and easier.

Greetings Willem do you have a trusted mechanic in and around JHB that is clued about the Amarok especially the belt issue? I have replaced my belt three times already and I think I need to take the vehicle to someone that can offer a permanent solution.

Is the V belt and the timing belt, the same, my car's V belt snapped but the car could still start but it showed the car not charging
@willemtreurnicht38183 ай бұрын
No the poly v belt drives the alternator, power steering pump and AC compressor. The timing belt drives the cam shaft, water pump and diesel pump, is it a toothed belt and is timing sensitive. It is wise however if your amarok does not have the cover on the poly v belt to check that no pieces of the poly belt entered the housing protecting the timing belt. When the poly belt snapped and the timing belt is still fine and the car runs fine then it should start and you can drive it. However your battery will run flat from the electrics drawing power from it... I have with a few trics done abouth 360kms gravel road in Nam with a snapped poly v belt... No alternator, not power steering and no AC... So it can be done. I have however rewired my elctrical system in the back to use my lithium battery to power my ECU so I could keep going. Not really advised to do if you don't know what you are doing, but it is possible...

Hi Willem, my belt starts making a noise only when I turn sharply in either direction. When the wheels are straight there's no noise. Could it be a tensioner issue or maybe the belt being stretched?
@paulbuys7895 ай бұрын
Mine does the same, thought it was my power steering pump, but today my tensioner pulley broke out and belt shredded to pieces, wonder if these works together

@willemtreurnicht38185 ай бұрын
I supported it only for a short while till I had the engine mount back. And after that I did support it under the front so that the engine don't tip forward to much...

@willemtreurnicht3818 thanks for the reply, only need to remove it to get access to the turbos oil supply pipe as its cracked. I don't have a crane or engine beam tho so hopping I could just support the engine with a plank of wood under the sump...

Hi Willem. I have just bought a 2016 amarok. It has the updated cover around the serpentine belt. There is a whining sound and an unpleasant harshness which changes with rpm and increases with power-steering load. It also increases as the alternator switches o n and ramps up after starting the engine. I suspect a worn out serpentine belt causing vibration and micro-slippages on the pulleys. I can feel the micro-slippages through the power-steering feedback on idle. I have had similar micro slippages and whining happen on a BMW i had long ago which was solved with a new serpentine belt. In your opinion would this be related to the belt only or a combination of the belt and tensioner?
@willemtreurnicht38185 ай бұрын
Hi Have a look at the clutch pulley on the alternator. It's a one way clutch which can cease up and cause vibrations on the serpentine belt... That in time will eat up you tensioner, and if you're unlucky it will have you stand on the side of the road, and if your very unlucky the pieces of the serpentine belt will get into the cambelt and cause that to slip, which can in turn bend valves etc... So check out the alternator pulley as well as the tensioner on the serpentine belt, if neccesary replace both, plus the idler and the belt... If that does not solve the problem you at least know that those items are sorted, then look further to the AC compressor and power steering pump... Hope it helps.
@THEmomentumJUNK1E5 ай бұрын
@@willemtreurnicht3818 Thank you!! My amarok has the seperate covers over the timing belt and serpentine belt. I have just replaced the timing belt, timing belt tensioner and idler. Serpentine belt and serpentine belt tensioner/pulley assembly. While the belts were off I personally inspected the alternator pulley clutch, power steering pump pulley bearing, and AC compressor pulley bearing. All perfect. I also flushed and replaced the power-steering fluid. After all of those, still the whining noise with rpm and steering load. I guess the power steering pump itself must be worn out then.
@THEmomentumJUNK1E5 ай бұрын
Hydraulic power-steering sucks. I have had a bunch of cars/suvs with electric power steering before and it's FAR superior. It has greater actuation force than Hydraulic, and can be turned on when being towed even if the engine can't start. Amarok was far behind on this especially by the 2016-2019 period.

Just wondering why you have to put engine in top dead centre for the rear main I have my clutch to do I plan on replacing the rear Maine
@willemtreurnicht38185 ай бұрын
It's simply a step to make sure that you have got the timing on the metal ring exactly right. If you use the timing tool for the rear main oil seal it will also require you to lock the engine in TDC. That is your default position for anything to be lined up that's got a position reference on the crank or camshaft.

50,000 km is ridiculous.. Mine went at 185,000 but it also damaged the idler. I tell you what, removing the front cover is an absolute pain the ass. Took me hours, I had to cut a screwdriver, grind it back to thicken the flat edge, and clamp it with vice grips. So far I haven't had to remove any coolant hoses. Waiting for new pulleys. I though it was my alternator pulley that was noisy, so I bought an alternator. Mind you the alternator pulley does have a wee bit of a tiny squeak to it, but flows freely and clutch works really well. So I will change it, just in case.

I'm surprised that the German engineers envisioned the removal of the engine mount to fit one F'ing bolt.
@willemtreurnicht38185 ай бұрын
Well they didn't really, that's why there's different torque specs for the bolt for when you re-use it... But I get your point, it's unfortunately just one of those bolts.
