ok this is an absolutely amazing idea !! A few years ago I had a class about the poet Arthur Rimbaud, and in one of his letters he wrote something that really stuck with me : "Poetry is the capacity of seeing the extraordinary in the mundane" ( i'm probably butchering it but you get the gist) And he took the idea of seeing a sunflower in the shape of a mosque. And this is basically the same thing but translated to drawing and design and yeah, i just think it's really beautifull and poetic and such a good idea ! So yeah thanks a lot, i'll make sure to try this !

thanks again for an other amazing video ! It's quite incredible that such good advices are not more widespread. The idea of just working for the things i'm pationate about is pretty much the only reason i can manage to keep studying. The idea of maybe creating someone's favourite videogame is worth it, the idea of writing someone's favourite poem is worth it

Huge fan of this video! Years ago, I remember some artists talking about how devs should adapt to different tools and how digital artists should learn 3D, in order to raise their chances of being hired. I think this was great advice, back then! Given the industry's current state of affairs, I now believe that same group of people will adapt once more, by learning how to become project leaders. In fact, this is already happening, as year after year we see more and more successful projects produced by 1-3 people. It's definitely a much more challenging step, but I believe that it is the way and how the industry will heal. On the topic of dedicating ourselves to our own project, I absolutely agree on that too. I've never been in the industry, so for what it's worth, it's just my opinion. Yet throughout the years, I've learned to separate the product from the producer. When I was a teenager, any job position at Blizzard would've been the ultimate dream, whereas these days not so much. To be fair, I can see myself settling at some point in a smaller studio with its own niche project, as opposed to a big IP. I know what I like to do and what I'd like to build, whether it will open more windows of opportunity in the industry, I can't say. Still, I know that'd be the most healthy way to approach the path to art success right now.

this is so funny because i'm learning web design in school, and i litteraly had classes that explained something really similar than your video but to design websites, like break down the website in smaller approchable components with a well defined purpose and things like that, and i realized that yeah, it's really usefull to design websites lol ! But i never thought to apply this to any of my creative processes xD makes me wonder about all the other things i've learned and that might be helpfull to develolp my creativity and help me be a better artist/creative ! this is by far one of the best videos/channel/advices i've found on youtube. Thanks to you i've started drawing again and focusing on just having fun, not caring about what drawing could bring me and not worrying about failing ... and i've never drawn so much ! Mind you i'm not good nor are my drawings but i keep going back to my sketchbook and my black pen (on your recommedation lol) no matter what. To be honest, I've been fighting a pretty serious depression for some time (i'm medicated and followed don't worry) and it's been a very, very long time that i've felt something that truely helped me liked that. So i would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart, from one wizard to another.

This is by far the kindest and most wonderful feedback I have ever received on any video ever. Thank you so much, and I am so glad it meant something to you. Please know you always have a place with us over on the discord. We have a community of people just like us, aspiring wizards with quirks and things, determined to fizzle spells until we cast a banger, and another...and so on, with the mission of shining light the whole way. I was new to discord myself, and a bit intimidated, but it's actually not very intimidating, and what we can do there is wonderful, with the most wonderful part being a family like us. It's free, not for profit, and all about this! Either way, I am so happy to hear this! I have a ton more coming, most it actual usable hard skills...but wanted to why to be here first! Thank you again. This is motivation of the highest order, and a fulfilment of my own promise...that the light you shine shines back onto you. That moves me to tears of gratitude. Peace to you, Fellow Wizard!

Great video Randall, do you feel like ProCreate is getting to a stage it will replace Photoshop entirely?
@RandallMackey4 ай бұрын
For some things, yes. For some things no. PS is still way more robust, required for prints, and I like it still for icons and small stuff, because you can set the actual pixel diameter of a brush. That said. I use Procreate almost exclusively now. All the actual drawing, painting, and artwork can be completed easier, smoother, and faster in Procreate. An iPad can't be touched for its value in power and portability. Moderate gains in power from something like a MSP or laptop running PS sacrifice mobility, and are just not as smooth and consistent as this set up! Hope that helps!!

How do you shade without coloring over the outlines? Do I duplicate the outline layer and put it over the shading layer or is there a better way? Thanks in advance.
@RandallMackey4 ай бұрын
I keep my line one layer, and my color on a layer underneath of it. I am painting in all the shading on the color layer. It's an advanced coloring book when you work this way. I do all the line work first. Do a solid fill layer underneath within the lines, then ALPHA LOCK that layer for the remainder of the coloring and rendering. I will typically apply the fancy layers (hardlight/overlay) over both the line layer and the color layer, which I DUPLICATE first, then merge, then CLIPPING MASK those layers over the painted layer. I hope this clarifies! Feel free to ask away, it's why I am here!

Your art reminds me a LOT of that Search for Wondla book series! I never got my hands on the books, but I came across the Find The Difference games online and I remember being *entranced* by the art and worldbuilding. I hold that game as a stellar example of worldbuilding, being able to communicate a setting and a story with only a series of slightly different images and a handful of words. I'm gonna keep an eye on this project for sure!
