I sold all of my X-Series Camera Gear and lenses 4 days before the firmware was released and purchased the Lumix S5II and S1R. Extremely please with the new system and believe it or the S1R with contrast detect auto-focus is more reliable and continuous auto focusing mode than my previously owned XH2S and X-T5. I am happy with GFX 100SII and 50SII for studio work. One day, Fujifilm might get their cameras auto focusing system on par with the other camera makers. The issue that bothered me so much with my Fuji X series cameras is that they cost just as much as a full frame camera. It just didn’t make sense to pay more and get less

Thank you for the video. In that bar scene in beginning part of video, you're shooting moving subjects with AF-S? Did not realize that was a thing with subject detect turned on? What is the advantage of shooting people that are moving (even subtly) with AF-S over constant AF-C focusing?

I have an X-Pro-2, so I know Fuji gear holds up over time. Been looking at the X-T4 as a second body. One in near perfect condition can be had for around $1K. The sensor is a significant improvement over my Pro-2, I really love the fully articulating LCD, and better build quality (IMHO) over the X-T5. It also has IBIS, which my Pro-2 lacks.

My first thought: That club environment has to be quite challenging for any AF system shooting video. I have zero experience doing video, so I'm not sure about that. It would be interesting to see side by side with a Sony for example and see the difference. Having said that, I doubt I'll ever be using my camera for video. But, I would be interested in seeing how you shoot the stills like you showed in the beginning of this video. Love the music!!! Have a rockin' day and Happy New Year!!

Could not agree more about the AF ‘tests’ on some KZbin channels. Nothing short of absurd to be honest. Just updated my Xt5 today and not yet used it. I tested the latest firmware for the XH2 and there was a big improvement on AF performance. It’s still not the best but it’s noticeably more reliable. I never bought into Fujifilm for their AF performance but for their image quality, form factor and certain features. I’ve recently used a $10k Hassleblad setup that had equally or less reliable AF than the Fujifilm bodies that I own but I never hear Hasslblad owners complain. Having a product that is easily accessible by the masses, opens the door to critics that aren’t interested in learning the craft but are just gear focused. Not every camera is a universal tool, and you should know what tool is best for your intended use. You don’t grab an FX3 for portrait work, nor would you grab a Hassleblad for videography work.

The whole discussion about the AF is completely overrated. It doesn't matter whether one camera can do something even better if the other can do it well enough in most cases. Or are we all BiF photographers now? And even there the Fujifilm delivers, even if not quite as perfectly as others. I'm talking about AF for photos here. There is nothing that an X-T5 and especially an X-H2s can't do confidently with more than enough sharp images. Unfortunately, the topic is good for clickbait and hundreds of bashers think they have to increase their self-esteem under such videos by making other things worse. Brave new internet world.

As others noted, not amazing but better. In my opinion, it looks like to me that Fuji will delay releasing the X-T6/X-pro4 until they get their shit together. I am not sure they will but Japanese companies are known for joint development. At this point they should team up with Sony or Nikon and just work on something together or pay licensing/royalties. I regret bringing my Fuji for the Christmas trip, wish I had primes for my Nikon Z8.

It's improved over the previous broken firmware, yes. But if you compare it to v2.10 it is worse for me with AFC + subject detection. usually my trick for shooting live musicians on video, on a Fuji... which I do A LOT (XT-30ii, amusingly NEVER updated the firmware) AFC, but spot focusing. usually stick that little square somewhere middle width, 2/3rds height. which more often than not, usually lands on people's faces singing on microphone when I pan past them, and/or faces behind drums and/or fingers plucking instruments. and if it doesn't, just quickly whizz that square where I need it with the touchscreen. ...yeah maybe this is slightly easier, because I just use the screen, not the EVF. and it's only EVER failed me (briefly) once if a horrifically/EXTREMELY backlit gig, where it lost someone's face completely. but that's like... one fail, out of 200, in the past year or so. ... but I'm also curious whether there's a better way to do it. and if my method ONLY works using the touchscreen/no EVF?

One thing I found is to use AFC CUSTOM to set tracking stickiness to max when shooting in a chaotic environment like you have here. Face detect plus max stickiness will tend to reduce the jumping from the face to the mic and then back to the face. Choosing a better vantage point so that the singer eyes never go behind the mic in the frame, helps a lot too. (Sorry, had to add that). In a recent studio test, I found that my Sony ZV-E10 was actually worse than my Fujifilm X-S20 when it came to dealing with objects passing between the face and the camera. I'm sure that most people would assume that the Fujifilm would come off as second best, just based on reputation. I sometimes wonder with these AF reviews how much Fujifilm's AF reputation colours the interpretation of the results.

Hi Pete, thank you so much for the effort to test the latest FMW 4.10 from FUJIFILM. I appreciated the open approach. It looks better and promising, perhaps they will also enhance more in the near future. All the caos generated around the FUJI AF as an interesting learning experience. For sure FUJIFILM has done a really bad job with the communication about it. As user we have to be realistic and not just brand supporter, we pay good money and the declared perfomances must be there. As well, it was an eyes open process to see how many content creator moved from silence, to brand supporter and finally forced to admit the issue, that means no much professionalism there but just the interest to please the brand. Once again thanks for being very active on this making tests and sharing result. And, I really like your b&w pics. Nice mood indeed. The bass solo??? Wow ... great! Happy Holiday & peace.

In all honesty shooting a video of a band performing is a challenge for any camera, you can’t expect the camera to know which person it should lock on unless you track that person. Best for those case scenarios is setting your camera’s aperture to f4 and focus manually on your subject, increase your ISO and clean up your files in post….this way at least you come with footage that is in focus and no pulsing/hunting. And if you want to shoot with AFC on video at let’s say f2 or f2.8 (the Hollywood standard aperture) just set your camera focus limiter around your subject and practice, practice!

Thanks for another great video. Here’s my take on the whole AF issue. In 2 years of owning my X-T5 it’s never been in movie mode so my comments are limited to stills.Happy with the update, eye tracking seems stickier especially when on lock to a specific eye. Prior to Fuji I started my hobbyist journey with a couple of Sony APSC cameras and shot loads of pics of my newborn granddaughter with AF in auto and many were out of focus - newbie user error. Only when I switched to X-T4 and now X-T5 did I learn and understand the exposure triangle, helped by the dials. Now able to concentrate on other aspects of photography like focusing and improving steadily. This whole AF issue is starting to bore me. Simple answer - if the AF is bothering someone so much then move to a different brand and stop revisiting Fuji videos and whining. Secondly, Pete is a professional photographer who shares his experience at no cost or benefit to himself - if you don’t like the content then start your own channel and show us how to do it. Rant over
