Daddy needs to become poly-scissorers, I had the same problem the scissors would constantly loose them. I bought a 3 pack and put them in multiple locations, now we never have that problem. ALSO Brotherhood of the wolf! It came out when I was a in highschool and same as you I havent heard much about it and almost forgot about it, I was going through a friends dvd collection and found his old copy, Im glad other people remember that, I think it just got overshaddowed by all the post matrix big tent action films like how dark city kind of got sidelined. but Its so good I need to track down that 4k!

I was very shocked to learn of corey yuens passing. Especially knowing he had been gone 2 years at that point. Absolutely insane. And yes i feel the passing of time too. I recently turned 35 and discovered hong kong cinema when i was around 8 or 9. And now to see all the legends old and start dying is scary but also a compete natural thing even though we dont like it. In my mind its still about the year 2000 lol. Great video.

i love The Untold Story, its one of my faves both from Hong Kong and in horror in general. i can totally undertand that its too much for some people tho, and u voiced your feelings very respectfully. i really vibe with the occasional dark humor of Wongs ridiculously antisocial performance, which makes for an slightly easier watch overall. and i love all the prison stuff in the third act. to me, its an appeal to being a civil society and not resort to cruelty as punishment. cause even after everything we and the characters had to suffer through, it just feels so wrong. theres no sense of justice or closure, and the the supposed side of the law has sunken to a truly despicable level

Hey will! Here's a suggestion for your podcast with mike: mad god by Phil tippet. Closest thing I can think of is eraserhead, for the mood, but it's like 95% stop motion. Extra points for you guys if you discuss the physical release with Guillermo del Toro and tipetts commentary where they discuss how tippet ate like 8 tabs of acid or something before accepting the return of the jedi gig and "traveled "to the center of the earth and then far out into the galaxy or something 🤣

I know many of the films included in volume 1 either have already been released or going to be released later this year from 88, but with the inclusion of never before released stuff like DOCTOR VAMPIRE, I think it merits a coverage, especially since who knows what's coming in volume 2!?

CONAN THE BARBARIAN is a masterpiece. Thematically deep and mythic. I've read Stone's draft and it just feels like he stapled a bunch of the RE Howard stories together. It was also set in the distant future, PLANET OF THE APES-style, whereas Howard's Hyborean Age was said to be about ten thousand years ago. CONAN THE DESTROYER, on the other hand, is pretty terrible. Dino De Laurentis forced a PG rating on them. Even Basil Poledouris's score is weak sauce in it.

Oh man, I tapped the living hell out of that box. It's no wonder you had to beat it to a pulp to open it. Just as an aside, the remake of Evil Dead is brutal as all get out. It strips a lot of the humor that was present in the Sam Raimi films out completely and what you are left with is the equivalent of a death metal song. Needless to say your mileage with it may vary but I'm a big fan. Enjoy!

Yuen seemed to have a real talent for working with women and making them look like awesome fighters. Joyce Godenzi was, by all accounts, hopeless as a martial artist. But careful tutoring and clever filmmaking made her a convincing screen fighter in those early pictures. Speaking of working with women, Yuen also directed the cheese-tastic DEAD OR ALIVE adaptation. I honestly don't think we will ever see a movie like DOA again. Too many crybabies out there.
@hkcinemasociety

I still haven't seen DOA, though I've been curious about it for years. I'll have to finally get over the hump and check that one out. Regarding Joyce Godenzi, I'm always so impressed by Hong Kong cinema's ability to turn people who have no fighting experience into legit-looking fighters on screen. So many very talented choreographers and directors were able to do this, with actors like Beardy, Andy Lau, even Alan Tam is kicking ass in Dragon Family. And of course Yuen Woo-ping in Hollywood, working with Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Uma Thurman, etc.

Jackie Chan was basically the one big HK star in my teenage consciousness in the late 90s. And of course I had heard of Bruce Lee, but I can't recall seeing any of his movies up to that point. When Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon came out, that's when I realized I may have a serious interest in martial arts films and Asian cinema in general. My journey as far as finding and buying Asian films wouldn't really begin until the later 2000s once I was in the working world for a good few years and started having some disposable income, and even then most of the films I was getting into were newer releases and whatever I could find at video stores near me. As far as my younger self was concerned, outside of the few big stars I already knew I was hesitant to spend what little money I had on older movies. I eventually settled into researching Asian cinema online from time to time and browsing eBay semi-regularly to find films that sparked my interest. It really wasn't until folks like yourself and others started popping up on KZbin in the 2010s, singing the praises of older HK cinema that I started looking further into it myself. That's when I discovered Come Drink With Me. Originally I had the Dragon Dynasty DVD release, and now I'm happy to own the Arrow Blu-ray. Given its release in the 1960s, I greatly appreciate what it did to put wuxia films on the map and serve as an influence on countless productions in the decades since. Cheng Pei-pei's role as a leading woman with legit martial arts skills and great on-screen charisma is super important, and is reflected in so many leading ladies that would follow. Before this drags on too long, I will end by saying the news of her passing did prompt me to obtain Shout Factory's Shaw Brothers Classics Volume 1 set, knowing that she plays a lead role in over half the movies on it. Even if I'm a bit late to the game on a lot of classic HK films, and with work and other interests always taking time away from my continued research, I feel it's my due diligence to continue to absorb and learn what I can from the hugely fascinating world of Asian cinema, as it is indeed one of my greatest interests. So as an aside, I thank you, Will, for this channel and for videos like this that get me to speak up and share my thoughts. May the beautiful soul Cheng Pei-pei live on through her films. 🥲
