Yeah, top 40 sucks. Thankfully, Matt Freeman"s still alive and keeping the bass loud, proud, and at the forefront in punk rock.

I've picked up my bass like a week ago and I tend to use Simandl for the largest frets and OFPF for the smaller frets, unless I really need to use OFPF

I just dropped $100 on a bcp acoustic/electric and after a quick set-up to adjust the string height, I'm rocking out anywhere, anytime like Brian Ritchie (not quite, but I'm working on it 😂). Speaking of, Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes) would make for a great video.

An excellent video tutorial as always Josh, but I wished you talked more regarding the proper set up of the bass ... I have a Jazz bass with Fender 45 flat strings and I can tell you that they aren't very responsive to slap, but they're great for a Motown (James Jameson) sound. Any string brand/gauge suggestions for a clean slap? 😎🎸🎶

I see you like to talk a lot this video could have been made in 2 minutes you could have said get yourself a tuner watch this tuner look how I use it and within one minute you could have went through all four strings

I'm an intermediate bass player but I feel like I have some minor picking problems (as I learned the bass solely on KZbin). After watching this video, I was somehow convinced that Josh's courses and a mirror (to monitor my hand while practicing) will help me fix my problem. So, I bought the course and I'm starting ASAP. I will edit my comment to help others to decide.

I bought a Glarry bass (p/j) on a whim last fall. By far, best value instrument I've ever bought. I did have two issues: one, the j pickup buzzes quite a bit when you turn up the tone, two, the neck doesn't like to hold adjustments. I didn't have the neck gapping, or any other issues that you'd expect from extremely budget friendly guitars (or basses). As a matter of fact, even the tuners are fairly tight. The neck "feel" is downright playable. I will say I upgraded as soon as I could, and I definitely prefer using the upgrade, however, as my guitar guy told me a couple weeks ago, "it's amazing what they can do" for so little money these days.

To be clear, the time spent doing the frets and the setup are what a good guitar has. Guitar isn't a trumpet. You can work on them

Slap bass is crisp and articulate on the J bass. I guess you need both...LOL. Both can get close to each other but they clearly have different genres. I chose both, and some humbucker as well Music Man.

*I am not a professional bass player* If youre a normal person, from my year and some change of playing...don't start on a 5 string. Practice on the instrument you want to learn to play but everythjng he said is 100% true and if you try to go from a 4 to 5 string, the bass will essentially bully you because it wants to Bad. Me personally I love it and thats what I wanted to start on, so thats what Im doin.

abt run to the hills, its not how hard you hit the strings but how fast. the touch has to be really light. so you can get fast riffs.

My main issue is being able to play without a drummer.... and the section of time signatures. If I have a good drummer it makes it easy to jam, no drummer is usually embarrassing after a few bars. I basically started out in a band right away lol. two friends from high school. Guitarist/multi instrumentalist; really talented kinda ran the show and I learned how to improvise before almost anything else. Now that I kinda know theory practicing solo I get bogged down thinking of what I am building harmonically or what scales I am incorporating rather than a tight or funky rhythm. I also tend to spit out triads without much flavor too much and it just sounds like im practicing scales instead of music. (working on it tho) Its like, if i have a drummer... the less I think the better the jams. Other than that passed with flying carpets and I feel like I really suck right now.... getting back into it after a decade hiatus. Used to be in a band.... did some paid gigs and didn't suck majorly. I feel like I have a lot more to say with my instrument now and my tastes have developed a bit to the point I might be able to write stuff? I have recently befriended a drummer that is over the top talented... used to tour playing almost every night for a decade.... If I can get gud enough to keep up with him.... might just be in a band again. Thanks, gives me a good reality check and kinda makes me feel better about my playing in a lot of ways.

I will say BassBuzz is more than one of the best teaching & learning channels on the net. Most of us, from 70 (age) up, lived this as players then, or who became players after “Motown” layed down the “soul & R&B”…Jamersons bass lines and approach just locked you in as a drummer. Some of us that transitioned from drummer to bassist was because of his work. When I took up bass in 68’, all I knew was what I had been hearing, so I ran with it! I decided to take lessons in 75’. Walked in, sat down. Teacher says since you’ve been playing a while, show me where you’re at. I laid out what was up in memory…”Jameson” lines with some structure, and improv melody. He said…”okay”, you don’t need a teacher, and introduced me to Carol Kaye and she will be in next week for work shop class. There were 5 of us, I wanted to learn playing with a pick, and she was the person to talk too, besides being the “Motown” bassist at least between 64’ to 67’ …it also opened my eyes to studio playing. What you are teaching here is good stuff, and accurate “roots” that younger generation guys should explore. The “swing” feel, synchs, root/octave/5ths…is the embodiment of a lot of creative stuff…definitely needs to be in your bag if not already. Your channel teaches with a fun approach and good practical useful playing inputs. I get hit up a lot on my channel for “tabs” teaching questions ect, and I am NOT a teacher, nor have time for that interest…just trying to land gigs by genre familiarity. You got it BassBuzz…I will direct the interested your way! 😎🎸🎶🙏🏼

Sure, you can do more with a Jazz Bass, but Precision Bass just sits in the mix better.
