After a lifetime with cargo ships they always claim the same thing - limited ability to maneuver. So colregs become conflicted. Glad to see that you and the boat are good - or at least mostly so.

Why don't you empty the black water into the sea? I am not sure if there are any local regulations in your area, but blackwater can be discharged 12 NM form the shore under MARPOL. And your yacht is too small to fall under this regulation anyway.
@happygoluckyland14 күн бұрын
Thanks! There are local prohibitions from that in the Baltic sea. At least close to land. But if nothing works people have to do it somewhere... 😬

Great that you are ok. The ships captain need to have some responsibility, because they have radar etc. They need to be awake in there and not run over anyone.

Accidents do happen, also to seasoned, well-qualified professionals. We can all learn from our mistakes. You talked about avoiding future situations. Here are some thoughts from an experienced Yachtmaster. The rules you quoted are all correct and clear. Some Rules you didn’t quote were: Rule 7: Every vessel shall use all available means appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions to determine if risk of collision exists. If there is any doubt such risk shall be deemed to exist.” Firstly, your doubt was sufficient to construe a potential collision. At this moment it was the time take evasive action. Secondly, “ALL available means”: your reliance on AIS was not enough. Your eyes are the most important means. I think you should have seen that you were on a collision course. If the bearing to the other vessel remains constant, it is a collision course. It’s really simple and much more reliable than AIS on your phone. Additionally, AIS on your phone is ALWAYS delayed. Now you know this too. Furthermore, AIS is NOT to be used in isolation for assessment of the risk of collision, even though it does provide CPA and TCPA. It was developed to provide additional and improved situational awareness. And Rule 8: “Action taken to avoid collision with another vessel shall be such as to result in passing at a safe distance.” A “safe distance” would mean “very far away” and also to the STERN of the ship. Also, big ships like that don’t see small sailing ships. That’s a fact. They often don’t even answer VHF calls. If you see a big ships, get as far away from it as you can. The most important rule that you didn’t quote is: Rule 17: this deals with the action of the stand-on vessel, which you were as a boat under sail. This rule includes the provision that the stand-on vessel must take action to avoid collision by her manoeuvre alone as soon as it becomes apparent to her that the vessel required to keep out of the way is not taking appropriate action. I hope this helps shed light on your experience and helps to avoid future situations like this.

And yes, after all life is crazy beautiful and worth living.

Of course! Call them on ch16 and state your posistion! Ferries are the scary ones for us little ones at night or in fog. Try to pass the ferry lines 90 degrees as fast as you can! Same problem every year at the same ferry crossing….

Don't yet follow your comments regarding delay on AIS. What AIS sender/receiver are you using ? I have not yet seen this behavior with my Weatherdock easyTRX device.
@Knuckleskins26 күн бұрын
Thanks for posting this. Do you have a radar reflector? Also, it's not cheap, but an AIS transmitter as well. If you're sailing along any kind of populated shoreline, just nav lights alone is dicey since they can be very difficult to see against the heavily lit backdrop.

Do never try to beat a big ship crossing its direction. These big boats come very very fast although they seem far away. I have huge respect for the speed of these ships and ferries. You were very very lucky this time. Change direction away from them next time, in good time. See this as a learning lesson..

Flying aircraft we learn to trust our instruments, not our eyes or senses. Driving cars we learn to trust our eys, ears and senses, not the mirrors or cameras. Sailing is like driving - unless you have no other choice, like in a fog bank or blinding snow or rain - always trust your eyes when it comes to other boats etc.
@rustie424228 күн бұрын
Ships do not have to give way to small sailing vessels just because you’re sailing doesn’t mean you have right away a ship that is limited in its ability to Turn always has right away. And don’t call your insurance. Why should insurance pay for your lack of seamanship, just fix your boat and be a bit more aware next time like I said before don’t play chicken with a ship.
@davidosterberg26 күн бұрын
No reason to be so confidently incorrect in my opinion. Maybe the ship had limited maneuverability, maybe not. It is not clear from the video at all. But what is clear is that the ship did not keep watch, did not even notice the collision at all. So its maneuverability did not play into the cause of the accident. Both parties are responsible to avoid collision. And good seamanship would be to play it safe. So no-one doubts that Mose should have taken steps to avoid collision. But the ship could very well have screwed up and be liable. Last, you can get insurance pay-out even if you are yourself liable. This is the point of insurance.

I was in a similar situation once. Middle of the night in the the Skagerrak sea. I could see a dark siloutte approaching my port side, no lights. Turned on the deck lights, and turned 30 degrees to starboard. The siloutte seemed change course and follow me. Made a callout on VHF, no response and nothing on the AIS. I was transmitting. As i could see the red bridge lights through the windows i tacked and what i identified as a 150m warship doing probably 15 knots passed by 30 meters off my port side i could do nothing but cussing them out over the VHF still no response. 😂

Never assume big boats see you, even if you have a AIS. Always use the VHF to make sure they see you. State your intentions and adjust based on their reply, communicate any changes to your intentions. Don't be afraid to use the VHF, it's there for a reason and do use it if there is even the slightest chance of danger. Glad that the outcome was not too serious.

I started taking evasive action when the ship was a mile away-called on VHF-cruise ship captain had no idea we were in his path. I told him we were limited in our ability to move; engine had failed & winds were light/seas choppy. Then I switched on the strobe at the top of the mast so he could see us. He veered immediately. This was long before boats were sailed like video games though! Lesson learned.
@michaelmather735228 күн бұрын
If you have AIS it should tell you what the other vessel is , cruise ship ferry etc , just keep out of the way ,he probably can,t see you especially if there is land behind you with lights , allways go behind them , if he,s a ferry then it should be marked on the charts that there are ferries. You were lucky might not be the same next time.
