Remakes/reimaginings can definitely be done, especially of the older films like Forbidden Planet. If it works, we get a modern classic. If it doesn’t work then we still have the original version totally untouched. The only losers will be the studios, the viewers win whether it’s a success or a failure because we will always have the originals.
@scifizone8 күн бұрын
Yes for sure. however, the main issue is when studios choose to remake a classic when a remake isn't actually required. Ultimately there are some good points to be made for both arguements, though it's likely cinephiles and purists would much prefer to see new and original stories be made into films, as opposed to going down the 'cheats way out' by remaking/rebooting/re imagining.great films which don't need it.

Funnily enough three people have commented previously claiming Natasha's voice was from an AI bot, so your statement kinda confirms she isn't - which is true. In any event Tash isn't a professional voice over artist, yet if there's any fault to be had it's on the editor who should've mixed her breath intake better..

@dwbrannon16 күн бұрын
The biggest reason this movie failed is that there was no antagonist. The bad guy was already dead when the movie opens. There is no climatic battle at the end where good triumphs over evil. We had Luke, but Luke needs Darth Vader.
@scifizone15 күн бұрын
Yes it's a fair point. From what is a 'wow that's a neat plot twist' point of view, sure it's clever having Totenkopf be dead for years, but you are right, it does mean we are robbed of a climatic clash - which probably would've included an Arnie-esque quip at the end as Joe kicks Totenkopf off the side of the rocket to save the day. 🙂

Yeah, _Quatermass IV_ is super bleak, can see why amidst the Winter of Discontent Britain rejected it's unbridled pessimism. Neale's obvious contempt for the youth is a sad way to effectively end the franchise.
@scifizone17 күн бұрын
There was once a suggestion that the Planet People movement as seen in the series were actually meant to be punks - because in the mid 70s Britain was in the middle of the punk music revolution. One can only imagine how the show would've looked if the series went down that route!

Shame about the voiceover… I found it so banal an irritating I had to turn it off. Is this more dreadful AI???
@scifizone19 күн бұрын
Sorry you didn't like our voiceover artist, but that's not her fault because the mandate from the video's director was to 1) don't speak too fast, 2) be sure to enunciate your words, and 3) don't sound like an AI robot. As fortune would have, she nailed all three because Tash - yes she is a real person - did her job so well (at least to us) that the alternative for the production team was to use a male voice with an Australian accent. In the end though - to quote a classic line from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade - we ... chose wisely. 🙂

I always felt Tobe Hooper's 1985 film Lifeforce was spiritually akin to the Quatermass films. And to a lesser extent the Midwich Cuckoos/Children of the Damned films. I also thought the Science fiction novel Chocky would deserve a feature film or television mini-series production.

I'll probably catch hell for saying this, but my favorite portrayal of him in Quatermass 2 by Brian Donlevy. His performance reminds me so much of that of William Hartnell as the original Doctor. Those guys did not suffer fools lightly. I always thought that he was working for the British Rocket Group because he was such a pain-in-the-ass that the Americans couldn't put up with him.
@Thurgosh_OG20 күн бұрын
I really enjoyed watching the John Mills Quatermass miniseries on TV back in 1979. I also didn't like the 'American' Professor version, he was too out of character for me to enjoy. Of course being a Scotsman, I mostly enjoyed the Prof Q from Quatermass and the Pit 1967 film, though it was quite a few years after release before I was old enough to watch it.
@Thurgosh_OG20 күн бұрын
Did you use an AI voice for this? I ask because for and English sounding female, several of her pronunciations are not how we says these words in English in Britain.
@scifizone20 күн бұрын
Funnily enough you're the second person to think Tash is fake. Alas, she is in fact quite real. As for her pronunciations, you can blame the director who is Australian for corrupting her innocence 🙂 Also to prove Tash is real, you can see and hear her in this trailer we made for another documentary kzbin.info/www/bejne/inilqmWXe7B5g80&pp=gAQBiAQB

There were not four novels based on the series. Nigel Kneale only wrote one novel, based on the fourth series. In the case of the previous series, the books were the original scripts.
@scifizone20 күн бұрын
Yes this has been pointed out to us previously. Unfortunately by the time we found out about our error, it was too late to make the changes in the video. So that's our bad - although at least the books are novel sized, so we were kinda correct. 🙂
@mandoprince120 күн бұрын
@@scifizone It's good to have the scripts, especially the first one, with only the first two episodes of the serial existing. The novel of the fourth series is excellent, expanding on the TV version and adding a lot of background information. It's a shame that Nigel Kneale did not write more novels!

there was a 3rd Doctor Doctor Who story 'The Daemons' that seems very similar in many ways to Quatermass and the pit, and a 4th Doctor one 'The seeds of doom' partly 'similar' to the Quatermass experiment! i cant think of one offhand thats reasonably similar to Quatermass 2 at the moment!
@scifizone20 күн бұрын
It's a known fact that Dr Who 'borrowed' heavily from Quatermass, which actually resulted in lawsuits being issued by Nigel Kneale. We were going to include this in the video, but felt it wasn't relevant to the Quatermass franchise itself.

As an American my first exposure to Quatermass was the 1967 Quatermass and the Pit when I was a teenager. I saw it on one of those late show programs I wasn't supposed to be staying up to watch ad it was scary ad very memorable. Even then I found Quatermass being portrayed by an American to be wrong. I wish they had done better by Mr. Kneale, I'll always be grateful for his creation. I loved X the Unknown and have told many about it but even I knew it should have been Quatermass.
@tedthesailor17220 күн бұрын
"X - The Unknown" was - and remains - a fine little chiller. It was on KZbin until late last year. You might also like "The Strange World of Planet X", a similar made-on-the-cheap British SF work. I'm afraid it also features an American lead. That was to give it trans-Atlantic appeal...
