Neither the Slate or the Schoeps does the Neve 'low mid thwack' thing when driven a bit, and both sound scratchy, plastic, and cartoonish when driven hard, the sound gets swamped by generic digital clipping. UAD cops the vibe. None of these have the low end weight or smooth upper-mid push of the hardware. Disclaimer: I'm just another dude with opinions.

Scheps73 acts strange when it comes to gain staging, there is almost no saturation unless drive is selected, and then there is too much of it. But the saturation is nice. Slate saturation sounds nice, UAD is ok I suppose. Not sure which one is the most realistic, however all of them can be useful. Also not sure about Waves not having oversampling, how much it degrades the sound in real life situations.

I tried all of it. No idea how the real 73 sounds like. But arturia, uad sounds more open if you crank the lows and the mids. The waves sounds pillowy for the low end and create a softer character. The slate eq is the most aggresive one especially in the high end. So different use for each of the emulation if you want softer and pillowy character i use the wave. If you want more open and tighter sounding go with the rest

Thanks.. nice to hear most of the good 1073 candidates (missed the VPRE73 though... and the Lindell, which is my preferred one) but why try to match the tone? I and all I know tend to pick preamp plugins to gain a certain vibe.. thats the tone they have without EQ. All plugins behave differently on how the EQ works?.. also remember to maximize the potential of all plugins. Many have steps of oversampling that enhances the sound a LOT :-).. Arturia for instance is a whole other beast at 16x oversampling!

All snake oil.. especially the real NEVE 1073... In bkind test... NOBODY.. I REPEAT... NOBODY ACOULD PICK UP THE NEVE 1073 VS A 700$ pre amp... This is a classic case of myth..legend.. audiofool legend..etc. yes neve is quality buid wise.. but it doesnt do miracle on sin wave an square wave... wich is all music really is. So go ahead spend 7000$ on mic preamp... youd be better off spending it on a amazing guitar... acoustic treatment... and some good session musician especially drummer and bass... And get some songwritting skill. These vst plugins dont do jack shit.

Agree and disagree... Yes these are just tools that won't be of any use unless you have great music and performances to start with. However they are tools to add to your colour palette which will make a big difference in the end sound and character depending on how you decide to use them. Also we're talking plugins emulations here, not real hardware, in case one was thinking of picking one of these options depending on taste and budget

@@gottafunkyfize they dont add anything that is audible dude. If you crank all the knob sure. But you dont emulate a preamp with a plugins its snake oil. Even the real hardware neve is pure snake oil. Build on ensorsment by legendery musician and. Do you know that even in blind test engeneer couldnt even fucking tell between a mxl micro and a 4000$ u67 by neumman... lol Its like these converter. Any converter that does 96khz... will reproduce without coloring the source. People have test this 4000$ rme vs cheap scarlet one... without a blind test everypne choose the RME... in blind test not so much. Its all subjective. Modern equipement offer transparacy...and clear tone. And the human hears cant see the differebce in most case. What makes the biggest difference is the source... the instrument. The compression and effect. And the room. This where most of the sound come from. In 30 years of doing this iv find that what people call now auiofool....has invade the recorsing industry. All that tube shit....vintage ewuipement... Etc etc... all snake oil. I started recorsing on a studder 24 track years ago...with a all vintage analogue studio. I wouldnt change my current logic x with digital interface for it. 70dba of headroom with hiss and shit... And people make plugins to put back the hiss and shit in our ultra clear recording... the irony. My nugget.

agree to most of it.. but look at the plugins as a color palette.. they can be used to color the sound to your liking.. you can achieve whats in your head :-).. that was way harder in the analog days! (been recording since 1984), All i can say is: when I apply the VPRE-73 (Black Rooster) or the Lindell Series 80 to my drum tracks they sound BETTER that without them.. whether they make it sound like a neve well... I could not care less.. as long as it sounds good! And they do.. btw: the Arturia rocks too.

Thanks for the comparison, those two are modeled on completely different Neve consoles. I'm sure you could have gotten a closer sound though messing a little more with the controls on each plugin. Off the bat the console N sounded a lot less driven for example. Also when nulling it's always helpful to check if it nulls even more when you adjust the level of the processed track to the original one - we're not wanting to know if it got louder, just how it changed the sound.

it would've never been closer since the slate digital is modeled after an 80 series and the plugin alliance one from vxs or V series totally different beast the 80's has more vintage tone but can get muddy quickly that why i use waves xls nevo or bx console when i want that more updated neve sound the xls nevo is from 5112 and the plugin alliance one VXS

@@gottafunkyfizeThanks, Just so everyone is aware. That means you either need a UAD interface that has a DSP processor, or you need to purchase an external, USB connected DSP processor from UAD in order to use the UAD VST. You can't just purchase the UAD VST and use it. Same goes for all the UAD VSTs, they all require an external DSP processor. You CAN just purchase and use the other ones as a straight VST.

Electrocyde it’s still the only one meticulously tested and certified by Neve and the closest in behaviour and texture. Not personally sure about Slate… you could argue it’s a tool with its own character and has its uses but personally, I never found it very useful as it doesn’t really sound like the way it looks (like a neve preamp). To me these plugins don’t make much sense if used subtly, I’d be after the tone and breakup of what their trying to emulate. Slate does better plugins for other jobs
