30 plus years of experience here including being one of the pioneer beta testers of vst technology, all I can say is if you like the sound you’re getting...use it. In other words with digital and even analog, if you like the sound use it. There are NO better or worst plugins, enjoy life and make hit records!

Yes, there are better of worse plugins. As there's better or worse programming, understanding of circuitry emulation, filter programming etc.

salute for this comment bro...i was stressin whether I needed the UAD version since I'm on the Waves version and for some reason I think the UAD is better...but thank you, you freed me from my overthinking! lol

Really good comparison and helpful! 100% better than the 170,000 view that call him self expert but compared UAD stereo to Scheps73 mono, Cheers!

Thank you! It really means a lot. I have been trying to make it as honest a comparison as possible (without talking,) it might not be perfect but it was also my first video and you just reminded me that I should be doing more of this! So thanks twice :)

Great comparison! The slate sounds great... all of them do, but considering the price of the everything bundle, it's fantastic!
@gottafunkyfize6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Yes they're all great. They all have a different character specially when pushed hard. I like the texture of the UAD distortion the most, Love that Slate is modular, easy and versatile, and the waves is great for mid side and has a lower hit on the cpu.
@slamcrank5 жыл бұрын
@@gottafunkyfize I agree with all you said - I like the UAD best, but the modular aspect of the Slate is nice. I didn't really like the Waves very much, but for lower cpu usage, it seems ok.

I own the Arturia 1973. It gets the job done for sure. It's got a nice big interface that looks great on my screen and it's good for driving things hard. I don't think this review does it justice, it's as good as any of the others.

Neither the Slate or the Schoeps does the Neve 'low mid thwack' thing when driven a bit, and both sound scratchy, plastic, and cartoonish when driven hard, the sound gets swamped by generic digital clipping. UAD cops the vibe. None of these have the low end weight or smooth upper-mid push of the hardware. Disclaimer: I'm just another dude with opinions.
@firmans123 жыл бұрын
I tried all of it. No idea how the real 73 sounds like. But arturia, uad sounds more open if you crank the lows and the mids. The waves sounds pillowy for the low end and create a softer character. The slate eq is the most aggresive one especially in the high end. So different use for each of the emulation if you want softer and pillowy character i use the wave. If you want more open and tighter sounding go with the rest

You need to use extreme EQ settings if you want a clear comparison. Do the test on something that needs a lot of EQ

Thanks for the video... This was enlightening! I think UAD is the closest to a Neve and Waves comes a close second . Arturia and slate sound more like modern emulations.

UAD is the best, but I was also impressed with Waves, and i'm not really a fan of their stuff. the other two seemed pretty amateur. not sure on their price but probably a rip off for that quality

Electrocyde it’s still the only one meticulously tested and certified by Neve and the closest in behaviour and texture. Not personally sure about Slate… you could argue it’s a tool with its own character and has its uses but personally, I never found it very useful as it doesn’t really sound like the way it looks (like a neve preamp). To me these plugins don’t make much sense if used subtly, I’d be after the tone and breakup of what their trying to emulate. Slate does better plugins for other jobs
@HR26354 жыл бұрын
Thanks.. nice to hear most of the good 1073 candidates (missed the VPRE73 though... and the Lindell, which is my preferred one) but why try to match the tone? I and all I know tend to pick preamp plugins to gain a certain vibe.. thats the tone they have without EQ. All plugins behave differently on how the EQ works?.. also remember to maximize the potential of all plugins. Many have steps of oversampling that enhances the sound a LOT :-).. Arturia for instance is a whole other beast at 16x oversampling!

Scheps73 acts strange when it comes to gain staging, there is almost no saturation unless drive is selected, and then there is too much of it. But the saturation is nice. Slate saturation sounds nice, UAD is ok I suppose. Not sure which one is the most realistic, however all of them can be useful. Also not sure about Waves not having oversampling, how much it degrades the sound in real life situations.

Doesn't the UAD require a UAD hardware DSP processor?
@chadbierman80585 жыл бұрын
Yes it does
@gottafunkyfize5 жыл бұрын
You're right, it does. Which does make it the least accessible of the lot
@bowlingactually5 жыл бұрын
@@gottafunkyfizeThanks, Just so everyone is aware. That means you either need a UAD interface that has a DSP processor, or you need to purchase an external, USB connected DSP processor from UAD in order to use the UAD VST. You can't just purchase the UAD VST and use it. Same goes for all the UAD VSTs, they all require an external DSP processor. You CAN just purchase and use the other ones as a straight VST.

@gottafunkyfize5 жыл бұрын
I would say that UAD is the closest most authentic to the real preamp. but even in real life those Pre amps sound slightly different from one another. For sure I wasn't able to get any of the other plugins to break up and saturate like the UAD (or real transistor)
