This is a good way of looking at this, I agree, I have experienced this. As I’ve been playing a long time, my focus is finally on being musical at all times, and you can only do that once you got it, not when you’re learning it.

In the key of C, for example, you mention Fmaj7 to Fmin6 then "up a fourth" to Bb7. By saying up a fourth, you're using the key of Fmaj as your reference point. A different way to look at it would be the calling the Bb7 a b7x of C and this a back door dominant that gets you back to the Cmaj. Not sure if one way or the other is "correct" or if it is whatever works for you ? I love the idea of mentally rehearsing away from the piano.

I've always played lyrically according to the words I SING with my fingers. Which would be in a bit of an issue if I had a band or orchestra behind me and no conductor.... Rather than a bar number I'm in my mind, at a certain phrase of words. LoL 😊

Funny but valid. At school, I actually learnt it in Ab too but then I had to lower to G for some reason I can't remember but I remember transposing it one lunchtime and I always preferred how it felt in G than Ab! Glad you enjoyed and hope it helps anyway :)

Your comments about the ego really ring true with me. I'm also learning guitar but have been struggling to make progress and I think my ego could be holding me back for the reasons you explained. Does the ego contribute positive stuff too?
@danthecomposer2 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. Even with the guitar, major scale shape mastery is paramount for absolute orientation. Spend time on that. The only positive of the ego is that it is entirely against you. Knowing this, it is easy to identify its involvement and act in opposition to it, much to its chagrin. As with all things of this nature, the positive is always found thanks to the negative. Alas, is there positive and negative after all? :)

Hi Dan, perhaps you missed my question so here goes: Which blues scale do you recommend to drill (for improvisation), major or minor blues scale? In all keys I presume? I get a bit confused which one is more helpful or if I need both. It seems you use the minor one only right? Thx again!

A short and nice video lesson on two licks to feel “blue” , thanks Dan. RH “b3” & “b5” “gliss” also go well with LH two Jazz voicings i.e. “3-b7-9” and “b7-3-13” to feel more blues. 👍👍

Thank you Andrew, hope you enjoyed it! Usually I discuss 'what' notes but herein I discuss more about 'splashing onto a canvas' (left hand accompaniment). It's fun to see all the variations and discover which ones you like the most! Agree with the voicings you provide, of course :)

Great, a new one for practice time! ps: I keep getting confused which blues scale to use. Am I right that you suggest playing the minor blues scale here? Or, in general? I've watched quite a bit of your video's and always hear you talk about major scales. As a beginner this focus on major scales has helped me a lot as I can play all major keys reasonably well. Natural minor is just starting on the six so no drilling of minor keys for me so far. But with the blues I get confused. thx:)
@danthecomposer4 ай бұрын
Hello there. Sometimes messages get held for review even though they’re perfectly fine, this is why I didn’t see this one. Apologies. Well, the blues scale when used in common parlance usually refers to the minor blues, which is what I always propose. The major blues still has a b3 in it but no b5, even though that’s the most bluesy note… see why it’s a bit of a pointless scale? It has a 2 (9) and a 6 (13) but you can add those to regular (minor) blues scale anyway! So assume blue scale means minor with the 2/6 option. Correct about the 6th degree of the major scale too! Keep it up. You’re on the right path. Best, Dan

@@PalwaanPrince Great, thanks for letting me know. I did research and it's a common problem it seems. Thank you, Dan. I really like the recent video lesson “My Favorite Chord in Each Key”. It may be a bit advance perhaps to some . I like your chord type for F#. LH chord and RH chord seemingly have some tension. Here is what I like about F#. I will play F#m7b5(half diminished) LH allowed by RH with BM7, then quickly resolved by LH with Em/G. Great lesson. Much appreciated, Dan 👍👍
