It's a fancy technique which fills solos and helps when accompanying a singer very well but often the pianist cannot execute it well. In this video, I explain the important of the octave jump behind rapid arpeggios. Emphasis is on the thumb for the ascending run but if you want to descend, you'll need the precision for the ring and little finger as well. Everything I say and demonstrate with the right hand will apply to your left hand too.

I have watched many tuts and NO ONE has ever explained in such a way like you... that WE HAVE TO PRACTICE SLOWLY! I am telling you this because a lot of self taught players like me me have lost so many years of practicing the extremely wrong and inefficient way! 👍

It's very important indeed, thanks for picking up on this! I also encourage eyes-closed which strengthens over time your precision so if you can play very well eyes-closed, imagine with eyes open! Thanks for watching! Best, Dan

There is usually a difference between electronic pianos and regular (analog) pianos: electronic pianos are generally easier to play because there is not as much resistance when you press down on the keys (although you can find many electronic pianos that simulate this resistance). This, together with the fact that electronic pianos create their sound digitally, severely limits the range of subtle timbres that may be generated on a digital keyboard vs. a regular classical piano (upright or grand) which will usually have a larger and richer range of timbres that you can create by pressing the keys in very nuanced ways. This is not to say that electronic pianos are worse than classical ones, nor that you can't "properly" learn how to play piano on them, but I would like to point out the fact that if you are learning on an electeonic one, you may develop habits and ways of playing that are very inefficient on classical pianos. Personally, I have developed some minor injuries in my hands from practicing with poor technique on my analog piano, and these injuries have strongly impeded my progress at times. I would also like to stress that if you are practicing on a classical piano that ALL of Dan's techniques, instructions, exercises and pedagogy are entirely applicable and may be executed just fine. Just remember to GO SLOW and without ANY tension at all in the palms of your hands and in your carpal tunnels. This tension is precisely what leads to injury and you will absolutely incur this tension if your technique is "incorrect" (i define "correct" technique as the way of playing that enables you to create exactly the sound that you sing in the inner voice of your imagination, and that does not cause any tension or pain -- so that you can "fly" while playing).

Dan you are very kind to take on my “request” on “fast arpeggio” and turn into a very useful and achievable technical video lesson. There are several tips that I can take away. I think I am going to start with “C” chord C-E-G up and G-E-C down one hand first then two hands across each other repeatedly with precision and it does not sound “clunky” as you put it. It will take least one month for me to pick up some speed. My goal is that I can feel my 10 fingers dancing on the key board elegantly. Much appreciated, Dan 👍👍

Of course! It's my pleasure to do it for you. For others, rapid arpeggios was one of a few common techniques I mentioned in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJi1aJ16q7WpjJI Your plan is a good one. As I said in the video, this will take many hours and weeks until it becomes rapid but once the arm is used to moving around by one octave distance, you'll be amazed how fast the arpeggios come out! And yes, the transition from 'clunky' to 'fluid' can only happen when you're not trying to consciously play each note but letting the fingers just flow over the shape. Try this is one octave with a triad before adding it to the second octave! Good luck! Best, Dan

Simeon Amburgey does a lot of reviews of music products on KZbin. He often does very nice fluid fast arpeggios. It would be nice to see a breakdown of a couple of the examples of his arpeggios. This is an example of a video with a song at the end that has nice arpeggios: KZbin: BEYOND The PIANOVERSE | Duality Strings Sordino | New Synths | News and MORE kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6G2nJepbq2nkNk Let's Play The BBC Symphony Orchestra Piano kzbin.info/www/bejne/qH6ZlKFreNuWhMk

Ah yes, lovely examples! I'll write down which ones he is doing and put them as examples in another video for you, perhaps in a more musical than technical exercise context. He adds one more layer which is to have the left hand 'lead' the right hand up by playing a note of or before the main chord his right hand is arpeggiating. I also do this for a moment in one of my old compositions. Here is the video of that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqfZnKVsadCcbtU - the timestamp for the arpeggio moment I'm talking about (but there are others) is: 1:30 Enjoy!

Thanks. Simeon does his arpeggios so fast that I often have trouble telling which fingers he is using. I suppose that following your advice, the best way to be able to do those fast arpeggios is just a LOT of slow practice. I think one arpeggio he does a lot uses notes C, F, G
