Not sure why but some bought charcoal and compressed logs seem to contain grit. It adds weight but isn't fuel. I consider it a scam to cheat the client.

Great review of the Alpacka Raft 'Forager'. I'm in May getting the Aquaglide Blackfoot Angler 130 for any fishing/wild camps with easy access to sea/lakes/lochs/canals and rivers. However there are some hard to reach lochs in Scotland that can only be accessed via a long mountain hike and that is where my place to purchase a Packraft comes in. In 2026 will be seriously looking into purchasing a Pack Raft. Thankyou for sharing! Liked and Subscribed

I take a few with when camping on the motorcycle. Pretty sure they say not to use in an enclosed stove, could be wrong but might be worth reading all the info on the paper.

Have burned sawdust blocks for many years. Needs much more air than wood. Do not damp down. Starting-put down 1/4” layer of wood pellets on stove floor, a little larger area than size of brick. Spritz with kerosene or bbq fluid. Place 2 pieces of angle iron (creating at least 1” height above pellets) then place brick on top of spacers. This creates about 1” air space above pellets. Place brick on top and light with bbq lighter or propane torch. Brick will be fully flaming in 10 min and burn much hotter than those paper wrapped logs. Lasts about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. About 300 degrees or more on my stove. If you can burn 2 at once can get 2-3 hrs and 400-450 degrees. You will need this kind of heat output where you are going. Good luck.

I really love Algonquin Park…It is magical. Mostly very wild but smart to do this sort of camping during the cold spell of winter.

Winter is such a beautiful time to enjoy the park! Yes, initially was slated for all days to be below -20C at night so I picked the front country option.

One of these days I'll get to Agonquin park... thanks for sharing... BTW... the reflection sheet goes under Bryce's bead on the ground so it doesn't hold the moisture. And heated clothing is waaaay more comfee than "layers".
@TheWildYam2 күн бұрын
I will try that out with the reflection sheet. Thanks for the tip! Part of the issue I think was that he buried himself in the sleeping bags and all his breath condensed underneath. Next time I'll try what you suggest.

If you can afford it, buy a wood pellet/fire wood stove. Watch Baum Outdoors and/or Lonewolf 902. The portable pellet stove will burn a long time with a hopper full. You do need a torch to ignite the pellets.
@TheWildYam6 күн бұрын
Oh that sounds interesting I was looking at pellets the other day but didn't know you could get a small pellet stove. I'll look it up. Thanks!

A bundle of dry, split wood is $5-8, and burns so fast and inconsistent that you need several for a couple hour fire.

I use those at home in my VC Intrepid small stove. The CANAWICK "bricks Size: 2 1/2” x 3 3/4” x 6”" mostly because they are so easy to start and meter out to reach certain temps or time needs. I build a arch with 2 or three and use about half the wrapper as the starter, works every time. No additive in these just pressed at vary high pressure of hardwood dust. OK, about the smoldering cold fire. I promise you these logs will consistently burn hotter and provide flame too whole burn, the issues and way to get the best are first burn LEAVE the door opened compressed wood is dense and needs lots of air initally. Stale brick act loose and edges crumble letting you know the humidity over time {season to season} crept in. Your second bricks as a example. once you have a active fire with coals and flame even stale brick come back to full heat and burn. All nighter logs smell funny and are dark colored less issues with flame and moisture but I still buy the small bricks. Tried many compressed products minor kerning curve but I prefer them over just seasoned hardwood and buy 3-4 pallets of them for heating 1000 sqf mobile home each Maine winter. Low around -8f but ave around 30'ish f

I use compressed Sis-q logs in my mini woodstove. I have found they burn hotter and more thoroughly than seasoned wood. Unfortunately, they are a bit expensive, although very convenient and bug free. Sis-q logs are only compressed sawdust with no parafins or other binders. I use 3 pieces of Fatwood kindling to get them started.

Nice video! I cut these on my mitre saw, about 2" thick, for Firestarter. They get almost any wood burning.

Great video, i have some Vermont ones, but not tried it yet. Will probably work better with a good firewood base. Will definitely look at the selection ones.
@TheWildYam11 күн бұрын
I am so excited to hear you are going to try them! There are other similar ones like Selection. They work similarly with the paper to light around the log. They do tend to clog the spark arrestor, so be mindful to clear it out and monitor pipes for creosote build up regularly if used for a wood stove.
@cathylynnpietranton12 күн бұрын
Jen, my husband, picked the first one. Selection.❤❤

Where I live in North Idaho we can get compressed logs that are just wood no glue to hold the chips together. They just use hydraulic pressure to compress it. You can use an axe or hatch to chop off small rounds which make it easier to get it going. They do work great for when you are wanting to get a fire going pretty fast. I also use them at night if I want to bank my stove so in the morning I have some coals to work with or if it gets really cold and I need to add wood at night. I always try to take a few with me hot tenting. 👍🏻

Was such a treat to meet you this past weekend! Martin (@pinemartyn) is a friend of mine! Thanks for your awesome channel and, again, was amazing for me to meet you! 🥰✌🏼
