They look great. I’m doing this with larger bowls and larger coils. I’d like to know what is your drying process? Have you noticed any cracking where the attached coil foot is?
@ronphilbeck13 күн бұрын
Hi. Thanks for watching. I usually dry the pots upside down and have had no issues with cracking. There are a lot of factors that can cause cracking or problems when doing this. One solution is to dry slowly under plastic. Try a few different ways and see what works best. Happy potting.

what is the slip you use to get the red/orange, almost looks like a shino? Like your pottery, back to the roots of this style, 6,000 years. Do you ever salt instead of soda?
@ronphilbeck Жыл бұрын
Hi, That slip is called Bauer's Orange Flashing Slip. It has been around a while and a Google search should turn up the recipe. I did salt glaze for about 12 years. I am planning on returning to salt in the future.

Shamoaka was the master of Jōmon zogan style of pottery. I think he was better than his master Hamada. You should use the mishima technique on your Joman pieces like Shamoaka did.
@ronphilbeck Жыл бұрын
Yes, Tatsuzo Shimaoka was certainly the master.

I'm new to wadding. I do not soda fire, but I am afraid of pot distorsion, that may stop the lid from coming off after the firing. Brushed alumina or wadding? That is the question. Greetings from Italy!

What happens to under glaze in a soda firing? Do you always use slips to color your work?
@ronphilbeck3 жыл бұрын
Hi Denise, You'll have to test each underglaze to see if it will work in soda. Some lose their color or just look terrible. I have good success with Amaco Jet Black underglaze at cone 10 in my soda kiln. I use flashing slips on all the exteriors. These respond to the soda and the atmosphere to create color. You can Google "soda glaze flashing slips" or "salt glaze flashing slips" to get some recipes. I apply these at the leather hard stage. Some are made to go on bisque as well. Good luck

What kind of wax do you use? Very useful. Video. Thank you!
@ronphilbeck3 жыл бұрын
This is paraffin wax melted in an electric pan. You could also use a cold wax sold by a pottery supply.

Love these and am looking to make more substantial feet on wooden bowls. Any idea of the history of this style or where else it might exist?
@ronphilbeck4 жыл бұрын
Hi Al. You could check out some historical Silla pottery from Korea. Also if you do a Google search for "ruggles and rankin pottery bowl" you may find some images that are helpful. They were very influenced by Korean and Japanese pots from the past. Many Greek pots also have a substantial foot. And Italian as well. Hope that helps. Cheers.
@alupton73224 жыл бұрын
@@ronphilbeck Thanks, Ron. The Greek and Italian searches were fascinating but none of the simplistic, elegantly curved bowl on a tall foot. In fact, it doesn't seem to appear anywhere much at all. Ruggles and Rankin had some nice designs such as www.rosenfieldcollection.com/b96/ but, again, not quite like these in your video. Although not curved bowl walls, your soda fired serving bowl with a tall foot (on Etsy) is the closest I've seen. A beautiful piece. Great work, mate. Inspired by you, I've turned a wood bowl using the golden ratio. With the foot height being the shorter segment and the bowl height being the longer, the whole piece harmonises very well. I've also used the same proportion for the foot and bowl width. Cheers, Al
