Soda Firing. Pots from the Kiln. April 2018

Pots from the April firing of my soda kiln here at the pottery in Shelby, NC.
I'll have many of these at the Thrown Together Spring Sale this Friday and Saturday.

A good load all around. The big bowls are especially nice and there are plenty of great looking mugs, jars,and yunomi. I'll have to refire a few things that didn't get enough soda glaze but hopefully they will be better after a second go.

what is the slip you use to get the red/orange, almost looks like a shino? Like your pottery, back to the roots of this style, 6,000 years. Do you ever salt instead of soda?

Hi, That slip is called Bauer's Orange Flashing Slip. It has been around a while and a Google search should turn up the recipe. I did salt glaze for about 12 years. I am planning on returning to salt in the future.

What happens to under glaze in a soda firing? Do you always use slips to color your work?

Hi Denise, You'll have to test each underglaze to see if it will work in soda. Some lose their color or just look terrible. I have good success with Amaco Jet Black underglaze at cone 10 in my soda kiln. I use flashing slips on all the exteriors. These respond to the soda and the atmosphere to create color. You can Google "soda glaze flashing slips" or "salt glaze flashing slips" to get some recipes. I apply these at the leather hard stage. Some are made to go on bisque as well. Good luck
