The original with Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder aired on TV around 1967. My uncles and father had all fought in the war, and emotions were still rather raw about Germany and Japan. But twenty years after the end of the war my father, who loved Mel Brooks' comedy, was enjoying the show.

Hilarious! Great! I wonder if they make a show like this about Stalin or Mao, two other genocidal crooks

This musical gets an entire room dedicated to it at the Museum of Broadway. That’s how groundbreaking it is.

As great as this is, they really upgraded the timing and delivery for the movie. The ability to cut and choose who appears on screen really helps the comedy for this scene, and that’s saying a lot considering is THE scene of the play and movie.

Gary Beach was a God-given gift to us as Roger De Bris… no one else, not even the original Christopher Hewitt, could have done the role more perfectly. I wish and pray for his eternal happiness.

The lyrics for the part with the female Dutch dancer, Stalin, and Churchill dance off with Hitler. Dutch dancer: “Challenge tap, challenge tap, clear the stage for a challenge tap! Bring on the Allies to hear the news, the facts is the Axis, cannot lose! Dutch dancer: “Cause Mr.H.” Roger: Who is that? Dutch dancer: “Mr. H.” Roger: “That’s me!” Dutch dancer: “Is wearing his dancing shoes!” Stalin: “I am Stalin, you’ll soon be fallin’!” Churchill: “I am Churchill, I’m here to win the day!”

I had to manage a movie theater in Boston on the opening weekend of Jaws, in 1975. It was definitely a phenomenon. From holding back the crowds waiting inside the lobby so we could clear the theater of a lot of very scared people. This despite the ending of the film. The primal fear in humans, dates back to our simian ancestry and reminds us of when we were just prey, not predators. It is the same fear that we experience with big cats, snakes Hippos, rhinoceros and crocodiles.

There were actual lyrics like this in the Third Reich's concocted "Jazz bands." It was also originally "Hirschfeld is coming" in Berlin caberets. Brooks knows his stuff.

I thought in NYC, somewhere , they have a Broadway history archive. Recent shows have films and recording, older ones have staging, set construction , etc. I think it is available to art? Students? ... anyway I could be wrong. I looked it up, The producers was a movie first, a play at turn of the century, and made to a movie circa 2005... and my library only has Mostel and Wilder movie version. I will say MB received an Oscar for his writing, a n d he had a talented cast for every performance.

I had to go for physical therapy and they had a chart on the wall that was called something like Pose-A-Bod. My first thought was the position that Roger had when he said Heil Me. They would have lost it if I would have taken that pose.
