Well... considering the price difference of hybrid VS petrol is often ~$10,000... I feel like collecting the value takes a bit longer than 7.5 years of $219 fuel savings. Also keep in mind that the battery cells will need changing in 7-8 years and that will cost around $6000 (that will offset the 7.5 years of minor fuel savings by a tiny bit, eh?). Also, the hybrid engine setup is a little messier than simple fuel, which means more things can go wrong (gas engine still running after swap to electric, for instance, if the switcher misses a beat). Further, you can NOT jumpstart a hybrid from a non-hybrid car, so if you are ever stuck you just need to buy a new battery. I like the idea of a hybrid, but just a few too many complications.

If you drive mostly on the highway, but a gas model, if mostly in the city, buy a Hybrid, simple as that.

Yes, a Hybrid achieves peak efficiency around town with lots of stop and go driving. That efficiency declines on the highway, where the added mass of the battery and equipment adds more load to the gasoline engine. Most of our customers weigh the benefits of both before they decide which way to go. We thought this would be helpful for people. Thanks for the comment!

and clearly, for this computation to work, electricity in Canada is free.
@claringtontoyotabowmanvill764217 күн бұрын
Actually the electricity in a Toyota Hybrid is 'free'. The battery pack is charged by the gasoline engine, plus it harvests electricity from braking energy. The vehicle is never plugged into a charger. You might be thinking of the RAV4 Prime, now called the RAV4 PHEV. That model is plugged into an electricity source. It has a higher capacity battery that can power the vehicle longer distances and at higher speeds than the Hybrid version. This video only looks at the RAV4 Hybrid.

Great explanation and for those who don’t know how to do the math. One more factor is that with the increasingly high cost of living and increased taxes whenever one looks, even a RAV4 is getting to be a luxury if one really calculates how they’ll need to get by at retirement. With that said, based on keeping the vehicle for 10-15 years, the hybrid likely wins by a somewhat slim margin, but maybe not. Why? Because the current (not future and expected higher labour and battery cost or electric motors replace cost) cost for a hybrid battery is approx. $7000, then 5 hours of labour according to their book ($200/hr.). In the future it will likely cost at least $10,000 to replace with installation. So, is it really worth it?

My hybrid Prius C here in Mexico gives me 4.5 or fewer litres per 100 k in combined city/ highway driving. The engine shuts off completely when stuck in stop start traffic jams, so those numbers are even lower. Then there is time and money saved on getting gas. Then the comfort of knowing I have a very, very low emission car. Then there is the trouble free Toyota reliability. A Toyota hybrid for me, everytime.

My daily commute during the week in SoCal is 60 miles round trip, and I've been averaging 46.6 mpg! It takes some getting used to driving more eco-friendly (which how I call it) to reap the benefits! I could probably increase the MPG, but I'll have to be driving in the 3rd or 4th lane for that. I love my SE hybrid, and glad I decided to get that model! Do your research, so you can make the best decision!

Other than the cost of gas and savings, are there other differences internally or not? I am trying to buy the first car in my life and I never expected that there would be a day when I would go to the store with 30 thousand to buy a car and the store would say it will arrive next year. I am the one who will pay a lot for it on cash. I find this illogical after contacting all the stores toyota. A year is a long wait and used is not a good choice. Iam confuse with this crazy world

You should speak to one of our Product Advisors to get all your questions answered. There is no obligation. Yes, we see longer than normal wait times. However, we have been advised by Toyota that it will get better.

Weird Comparison
@claringtontoyotabowmanvill7642 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. The Corolla Gas Sedan and Hybrid Sedan comparison is tricky because of the equipment differences. In Canada, the Corolla LE is available in Gas-only and Hybrid, which is the basis for our comparison. We wanted to compare to similarly equipped Corolla Sedans Hybrid vs. Gas-only. When you go to a different trim in the Hybrid version, you get All-Wheel-Drive standard. However, All-Wheel-Drive is not available on any Gas-only Corolla Sedan. We hoped that any customer contemplating a Corolla Hybrid Sedan would contact us so we could walk them through the model line-up and equipment differences. Our videos and worksheets are available here: www.claringtontoyota.com/do-you-really-need-a-hybrid-clarington-toyota/ Thanks for your feedback. We hope this explanation helps.

If you live where gas prices are high or you expect them to increase a hybrid makes much more sense. We have a 2015 Avalon hybrid it has already paid for itself. With California gas prices ~$5.00/Gal.

Thanks for your feedback. We originally did versions with $2.00 per litre gasoline. The payback periods change for sure. When gasoline dropped to approximately $1.50 per litre we redid the videos. At the same time availability of hybrid models changed too. There are more detailed calculations and worksheets on our website. www.claringtontoyota.com/do-you-really-need-a-hybrid-clarington-toyota/ By they way, glad to see you have an Avalon Hybrid. Just wait until you need to replace that hybrid battery. $5000-$8500 plus labor cost. I've owned Honda Civic Hybrids and a Toyota Camry Hybrid and never again will own these cars. I've owned 2 regular gas Toyota Avalons, several regular gas Camrys several gas 4Runners gas Highlander and several gas Lexus cars and prefer the gas versions no worries about the ridiculous cost to replace the hybrid batteries. The Camry Hybrid was supposed to have the similar horsepower as the Avalon hybrid but wasn't happy with the lack of power. The gas V6 Avalons I had were night and day nicer to drive. Sure the gas cost more based on MPG but no need to worry about spending close to $10,000 to replace the hybrid battery including labor so it would be a wash right there on the gas savings.

Where can you buy gasolin at C$1.50 nowadays? It may take less time to cover the extra cost of Hybrid unless you include insurance difference.

Thanks for your note. We originally did versions with gasoline at $2.00 per litre. When gas prices came down locally and the wait times for Toyota Hybrid factory orders changed, we redid the videos to reflect both. We chose not to cover residual differences or insurance because insurance varies by market and individual driver, and residuals change quarterly throughout the calendar year.
