One of my favourie ever saves was in one of the Covid lockdowns where I won the Portuguese league with Boavista, playing a counter-attacking 4-1-4-1. Yusupha Njie + Heri Tavares tearing teams up on the break.

I'm playing 23 now and it seems to me that the only tactics that can win are high intense pressing, fast short pass, counter pressing and counter attack. Am I wrong? I tried playing with a low block or slow pass, but it just didn't work.

I have thousands of hours in FM and I've been struggling with tactics recently as I couldn't get attacking mentality to work for me. All of it makes sense as to why now. Positive and attacking only really work for chasing games or being a far superior team and balanced for the majority of the games. Thanks for this!

I think the "challenge" started when one FIFA/FC famous youtuber (I reckon it is @NickRTFM) gave a try on FM and decided to take Ten Hag's place and lead Man Utd to glory. Without much experience he landed first place in the Premier League among others conquests. Then 'everyone' in the community felt like "I must try that myself".

Hi, interesting video. I'm also currently managing Valencia, a team that has fallen away from the top of Spanish football over the last decade - ofc they weren't exactly on par with Madrid and Barcelona though. I have never noticed the possibility to give the players I am out to bring on as substitutes a little pep talk. Where can I find that? Is part of a skin or something?

Great video I just have one question. Isn't the Poacher the one who creates the space behind him cause he's always trying to push defensive line lower and beat the defenders? Or you moved Nunez to AF to allow more horizontal moevement, opening the space for Szoboszlai to run in?

the AF pushes higher and also, correct, moves horizontally. Poacher moves around a lot less

I feel like in this game more than the other ones strikers are absolutely terrible after their first season. This happened to me in a previous save where i managed Fiorentina and signed Joshua Zirkzee who was incredible in his first season and was the top scorer of Serie A above Osimen but after the first season he was absolute crap and missed open goals and pens all the time against crappy farmers clubs. Another example is when I managed Tottenham and I signed Viktor Gyokeres, he was amazing in his first season scoring hatrick after hatrick but then he just fell off after the first season. Its a joke

I think you should try it, see what the interplay is like. There's a loooot of variables, but all things equal I'd say the winger does get pushed a tad wider. Then again, if you select 'look for overlap' the mez might head outside more too

I manage Inter Milan in my FM23 save. If I'm playing against the likes of Man City and Liverpool, who we all know LOVE to harangue you for the ball, would it be wise to set my GK to SK-att to create that overload against a front three? Also, how do I outnumber the press in a 433?

well, the space against a 433 is in your DM area so that would be my go-to - a technical player there might be the way, like Gravenberch for Liverpool IRL right now. As for the SK-A my own opinion is that GK instructions are the weakest part of the game, I don't see much help even going to the extreme like that

This has been a very well explained, in depth video about defending in FM. Probably the best I've seen so far. I play a 433 possession tactic with Inter Milan in FM23 and I got trounced by Liverpool. I really don't want that to happen again, so I'm looking into mid block tactics. What formations work best in a mid block, other than the 433?

it depends how you want to make it work. Right now I'm uploading a video with a 4-2-4 that uses a mid block, for me it's a matter of where I want to win the ball and the block is that location - formation then means putting players in a place where they can press

The cover for a CM on attack in an IWB on support. The wide player should provide the width. I'd also put my DM on support so that the midfield moves as a block.
