LONG LIVE THE MEMORIES OF READING PENNSYLVANIA AND BERKS COUNTY FROM DECADES AGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM FROM MICHIGAN AND DIDN'T LAND HERE UNTIL 30 YEARS AGO IN APRIL 1994, AND I WANT OUT OF HERE VERY BADLY, BUT I HAVE AN EXTREMELY SOFT SPOT FOR WHAT THIS AREA WAS MANY YEARS AGO, NOT FOR WHAT IT IS TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone have a bead on the year this was made? @27:40 it mentions 1971, so it has to be after that. From the looks of the video quality it looks like it's from the 1890's.

Got to Reading several times in '77-79. Our Dad would drive us the 2+hour ride to see the greats of modified racing. Got to see the best of the best in Brightbill, Chamberlin, Tobias, Buzzie and more at the mecca of dirt modified racing. Still miss that track, but so thankful we were able to be there.

Wow great video, some of the names in that video , Tobias , Old bones Dave Knisel , Buzzie , Brightbill , Chamberland , Jack Johnson , Billy Osmun , and the list goes on . Lindy why did you let such a remarkable track go , the same as the Nazerth Nationals on the Mile track did so much work to get it redone and one 200 lap race and done , crazy !

I am dumbfounded at the level of destruction to downtown Reading during the '70's. They didn't do this to Lancaster! There are so many beautiful places in Lancaster. Was Reading the "redheaded stepchild" of Pennsylvania cities? I was born and lived in Reading until we moved to York in 1958. I remember the Pagoda, the lovely museum grounds where Mom would take us to feed the ducks. I remember going shopping at the wonderful markets on Penn Street, Pomeroys, having lunches with .25 cent sundaes at Woolworth's. Whoever was responsible for this carnage should be tarred and feathered. So Sad!

Lancaster is the most underrated city on the east coast, in my opinion. It survived the urban renewal era unscathed, it reversed its urban blight/crime problem (which wasn’t as bad as neighboring cities to begin with), and it’s experiencing a cultural boom right now. It’s also a deceptively big city too. Way bigger than it appears on paper. But because of one interesting reason, people mistakenly see it as smaller. It never adopted the trend that other American cities did in the mid-20th century of annexing neighboring municipalities and incorporating them into the city proper. Because of this, every inch of Lancaster city is a highly dense, urban, and walkable place. The city proper is 4 square miles and is home to 60,000 people. But if you include the populations of its immediate bordering municipalities (to get an idea of how populous Lancaster “would have been” if they followed other American cities) the population quickly balloons to 200,000 in that area. And the metropolitan area is over 550,000. This shows that Lancaster is similar in size to cities like Charleston, South Carolina and Boise, Idaho. Both of which are considered “real cities” just because their suburbs are technically “part of” the city and inflated their population numbers. It’s all just a matter of perception.

Grew up across the river in West Reading....50's - 60's times were still good, like most of the rest of the country. Growing up in Berks County, in those days.....like most of my generation feels, a wonderful time to have grown up in! Will never bee that good again, I'm afraid.

Not gonna lie, the double feature of Disney's G rated Pocahontas and Michael Crichton's R rated Congo is QUITE the odd combination! If I'm not mistaken, I believe the 1996 Casper movie was the last movie shown here as I seem to remember it being on the marquis after it closed until they knocked it down.

A once thriving city in the 50’s, ruined by the Reading Development Authority’s greed. You tore historic buildings down to the ground, like the Astor Theatre and made the main street a wasteland of concrete. All for the money.
