Super informative video, thank you! I’m restoring an airflex couch and the springs are tied together with black elastic bands which have seen better days and many are broken. They’re normal-ish sized elastic bands just tying one spring to the next, and so on. Is that an alternative method of tying the springs or was this maybe a layman’s repair job?
@markharris9660Ай бұрын
Some manufacturers will use such methods. As long as each spring is tied together so that they work as a unit you should be ok. Tying twine, wires that are clipped together and webbing are other ways that manufacturers tie those together. All methods work. Some are more durable and tie together better than others.

Natuzzi leather furniture. We've had a 4/pc living room for 23 yrs. Wood base still looks new! The frames are still great! Leather is wrinkling, scratches, & some scratches are starting to tear. I'm not sure if I should buy new? These pieces are too good to throw away, & with a contractor husband & dog's, it still lasted 23 yrs now I'm wondering about price difference. Plus I love the design i have vs new designs.
@markharris9660Ай бұрын
Great question. You would need to reach out to your local upholsterer to know for sure, but a 4 pc sectional in leather could run you more than you paid for it if you paid in the 2-4k range. But if you like the sectional style and comfort-- reach out and get a quote! Most places will give you an estimate for free.

does anyone know what the red spray glue is?
@createwithcraftsmanАй бұрын
It is a foam glue. Foam is polyeurethane based and doesn't play well with most adhesives. Below is a link. www.yourautotrim.com/1gakad.html?msclkid=d3ed1a440824158a5d937d77e860ec26&Shop%20All%20ID%27s%20DT%2FTab%2FMobile&All%20ID%27s

Do you recommend doing Fabric on your own, at home? So, if I want on-line to buy fabric, I assume I owed need too measuring , cutting, and fitting skills to do this on my own without any experience? Sewing skills, no? Or is more complex than this, which I think it would be, but am not sure about. I can take a picture of my Chair...it unfortunately has Mold/Mildew which I think is embedded into the foam or straw itself. It seems like a classic chair. Any help is appreciated before I strip, replace, or throw this out--which is what I never want to do! Thank you
@createwithcraftsman2 ай бұрын
You're getting into some of the details of how to to do the actual project. That is a question of how handy you are, what tools you have, and how complex your piece is. Some chairs don't require sewing and just need to be pulled and stapled. This video can give you an idea of what can be entailed in such a project: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oX_Oo2aheN2hiKM&ab_channel=CreatewithCraftsman

I like you diy glue gun! Can you show us how you make it?
@createwithcraftsman2 ай бұрын
I'll do you one better. It is not home-made. Here is a link below! It is a siphon gun. You can actually get a cheap one from Harbor freight. Any of these you get just know that if you don't oil the connecting pieces and let it sit too long it will become really hard to separate. But the kind of glue that works on foam and things is pretty intensive stuff. You can also use a 3M adhesive spray can that you can get from the home depot. Just check that it works for foam. Tell us about the crown and seam allowance
@createwithcraftsman2 ай бұрын
We will try to get you a new video on that. But crowning is how you get a rounded puffy side to happen without pulling in the sides of the cushion. If you want a flat cushion-- don't worry about crowning. But if you want a lofted, domed, puffy look-- then you need to add places for the foam to go, but to still have the edges straight when you're done. Seams-- in upholstery a 1/2" seam allowance is standard. That is where you sew 1/2" from the edge of the fabric so that the fabric doesn't unravel on you when you're done (and gives you space to keep everything straight).

That is our foam adhesive. You have to use a specific adhesive because most things don't stick to the polyeurethane and similar chemicals. 3M makes a good adhesive spray you can get at the home depot or walmart.

I would attempt it myself, but no one carrys 30 inch rings. Any suggestions?

I would suggest reaching out to a local upholstery shop. That is for sure possible but is going to be more on the custom side of things. You could also reach out to a lamp shade or light fixture company. There are places that specialize in exactly the kind of thing you're looking for.

I’m having trouble with the simple single knot on each spring. When you tie and pull to tighten it in the video it seems your knot pulls out the slack and gets tighter. When I pull it doesn’t seem to take out the last bit of slack it just locks in place once the knot is tight. I feel like I should be able to get it to tense up more but the knot locking up seems to prevent that. Any tips? I like the technique.
@createwithcraftsman4 ай бұрын
try tying that knot the other way. Instead of RH over LH go LH over RH or vise versa. That should clear that up.

I had a custom velvet down couch that lasted 25 years through 3 children, 2 adults and 2 dogs. It was slip covered so i could wash it. Well its finally sagging now. I look at the junk sofas on the market for $3000. My velvet couch came from North Carolina and cost $8000. It was a wedding gift. I dont want to part with it. My husband can do the springs. What type of foam should I replace the bottom cushion with? I think i vould just slip the slip cover over the new foam?
@createwithcraftsman4 ай бұрын
You are going to want to use foam you get from an upholstery shop or foam shop. Something around 27027 for the seat is good (those are specification numbers for the ILD and IFD which is how dense and how heavy the foam is. The density should be good for a seat (or up to 35 on the firmer side) for a seat. A local upholsterer or foam shop should be able to help you navigate that. There are some online options that you could use as well but local shops can typically get you better pricing. www.foamorder.com/

Do you have any suggestions for where to buy no-sag upholstery nails? It seems like Upholstery Connection doesn't sell them anymore.
@createwithcraftsman4 ай бұрын
It is a hard nail to find, our suppliers discontinued them too. you just want a thinner nail with a larger head and to try to not be as thick as your wood so it doesn't poke through. A local hardware store like Ace should have a few options. If you can't find something let me know and we'll look up a spec for you.

How do you get into cracks? I have a very old table I'm about to do and I can't figure out how to deal with the a large crack? I think it will look odd if it has the old stain/varnish still in the crack when I refurbish it. Not the kind of furniture you do, I know, but I assume this happens on chairs and stuff too?
@createwithcraftsman5 ай бұрын
Wire brushes do well at getting into cracks. If you spray on the stripper that can help it get in and loosen things up. Many cracks are narrow enough that they may not effect your new finish depending on what it is.

Yes you can! all different kinds of crowning are possible and depending on the stretch of your fabric you may need to adjust your crowning for a larger fill in the center. Principles all work the same though.

Very helpful thanks! I reupholstered my entire suite myself teaching myself by taking it apart and reupholstering .....2 chairs need to be done again now but I must replace zigzag springs and sponge etc this time ...how do I calculate the amount of sponge etc needed please....is it the same as the calculation of the fabric? Your help will be much appreciated! 😊
@createwithcraftsman6 ай бұрын
That is really getting into the weeds. You need to know how thick of foam each part of the sofa has (needs) and then to calculate the square footage or overall dimensions using each thickness of foam. For instance most arms are between 1/2" to 3" foam, seat are typically 4-7" foam, backs are 1-3" foam, decks are 1/2" foam, etc. So when you take it apart just be careful to look at the thickness (based on the middle of the foam somewhere instead of an edge and you'll get the right idea.

@createwithcraftsman7 ай бұрын
specifically italian ruby twine. It holds up a lot better than typical bailing twine. I believe it is just a hemp twine but it is durable. If you use something less quality you can double up on the thread to keep the strength up.
