You didn't give ds2 enough credit. Many times, you jumped straight to ds3 when ds2 did it first, or you took things from ds1, and when "this is it, but ds3 did this iteration", ignoring that ds2 had a big part in it or straight up being more accurate. It happened too many times to mention individually. It would seem you probably don't like the game too much

I mean I don't lol, but I believe I more so did that because whatever said mechanic more closely resembled its Dark Souls 3 incarnation, rather than spite. For instance the estus flask shards, yes that started in 2 but given there was plenty of other easily accessible healing methods, it somewhat subverts it, not to mention things like alloting flask to magic too. I did that for other games too, say like Erdtree Avatar, the earliest incarnation is Vanguard but it resembles Asylum Demon more, so Vanguard only got a passing mention here. That said, I'm currently working on compiling all the callback videos and I did miss a lot of little things in Dark Souls 2 (and the rest too but there were a lot of *obvious* things for DS2 in retrospect), which I would attribute to the fact that I haven't played that game as much, but I'm fixing that for the video

I watched the entire video, and I honestly couldn't disagree more. I love delayed attacks, because it forces me to pay attention and learn from my misstakes. If a boss does a delayed attack and hits me right after I roll too early, I'll make a mental note of watching out for that attack in the future, and try rolling later next time. Radagon is a great example. He has an attack where he smashes the hammer down, waits a tiny bit, then drags it up. At first I rolled the second swing immediately after the first one, but that got me hit. So I made a mental note of delaying my second roll when I saw that attack, and I've barely been caught by it since. This is a very good thing imo, as it made me pay attention to his patterns and think of a solution to a problem. I don't want to dodge everything on my first try from pure reaction. In fact, my reaction time has always been awful, and the attacks I struggle the most on are the really fast ones. PCR's most dangerous attack by far for me is his quick slash with only his right sword, simply because I struggle to react in time. I want the boss to give me a challenge to overcome, and force me to be attentive, smart, and to learn over time. This doesn't mean that I want every boss to take hours, but if I can beat a boss on my first try without being overleveled, I consider that a bad thing. You also seem to consider delayed attacks inherently bad, and can only sometimes be good in specific scenarios. It felt to me like you're completely unwilling to learn, and generally want to beat everything on your first try. If you keep getting caught by the same delayed attack over and over, you aren't learning at all, and are most likely simply trying to brute-force the boss. I personally don't get this mindset, as for me, fromsoft games are about overcoming challenges. Delayed attacks also massively contribute to one of my favourite parts of ER combat: the constant aggression. The absolute majority of bosses allow you to stay near them at basically all times, and you don't need to back off at all. Delayed attacks allow you a small pause to regen your stamina, elliminating the need to back away. One thing that frustrated me about DS3 bosses was that I frequently needed to hold back on my punishes, or risk running out of stamina. Because in DS3 combat, in my experience, there's very few times where you want to do anything else other than dodge or attack, and the only time you can properly regen stamina is to either back away or simply don't punish an opening. I do think there's one example of egregious delays; scaly misbegotten. Their axe swings are delayed by whole seconds, and feel incredibly akward to dodge, as they have basically zero tell, and need to be 100% memorized. Almost every single other delayed attack however I think either feels natural, can be read, or is easy to learn. Lastly, I despise the mindset of "anyone who disagrees with my criticism is a fanboy who refuses to see the game's flaws". Criticism isn't immune to criticism in return, and you can disagree with something on a fundamental level without being a blind fanboy. Just because someone thinks that something is an objective flaw, doesn't mean that others agree that it's a flaw in the first place, or exists at all.
@BertoPleaseКүн бұрын
why do people keep saying "you just don't want to learn the bosses;" y'know I beat the DLC right? It's not like I gave up halfway, I beat all the bosses, in NG+7 first playthrough mind you, which I wouldn't do if I "wanted to beat every boss first try." I didn't include that in this video I think, but I did on the videos I did as I was going through it. Either way, you're just making wrong assumptions about me, this comment was fine until then, because contrary to popular belief, apparently, I *am* okay with disagreements. What I said about criticism and fanboys wasn't that people can't like it without being blind, that was specifically targeted at people who won't even consider the idea that there *CAN* be any flaws in the DLC and it's perfect, which I had gotten a ton of those comments already before I posted this one. I simply have much more respect for people who at the very least are willing to see the flaws in whatever they love over people who just blindly defend something, and generally without even taking the time to listen to the complaints. There's plenty of games I love that have flaws, MOST games do, and I have plenty of friends who liked it but aren't lambasting me over not liking it, generally they acknowledge it's not perfect at the VERY least. Now I respect that you can like delayed attacks, but one thing I brought up is just the overuse of them. You mention liking that you'll have to make a mental note of an attack that can't be dodged on reaction, that's fine in theory, I can't disagree with that, but which boss didn't have MULTIPLE delayed attacks? And ones that vary between them? That's my main problem with delays in SOTE, and even ER, nearly every main boss uses them and have multiple ones at that, it gets to the point where they rarely have attacks that *can* be dodged on reaction. You're making it sound like this is a learning experience but what new is there to learn? That the next boss probably will have delays? How is that a surprise or a learning experience after a certain point? If I fight 5 bosses into a game and I realize they've all had status effects I have to deal with, why would I not expect the 6th one to not have them at that point? And sure, to some degree you can argue this isn't an objective problem, but you can't deny it's gotten so far from the original design philosophy of Demon's and Dark Souls 1 at this rate. Those games didn't require as much trial and error as these games do, they were a challenge but they didn't require you to just throw yourself against the wall the same way delayed attacks essentially force you to do, and it's a shame seeing these games try to become some noteworthy action game when in reality all you do is roll and attack, when the prior games weren't so focused on bosses and combat, and tried to encompass so much more.

@@BertoPlease because that's the impression you gave off to me. In your video it sounded to me like you wanted all bosses to be beatable on your first try, through easily readable attacks. Now that you've explained yourself I know better, but that was the impression I got from watching the video. I'm sorry if I misrepresented you, but I didn't have any better info to use at the time. Before I continue, I should say that the next paragraph is not intended as a dig against you. I'm talking in general to explain myself. I do agree that people who claim that something is completely flawless are wrong, nothing is without flaws. However, I've seen a lot of people refuse to acknowledge that their criticism can be critiqued in return, and deflect everything with "you're a blind fanboy who can't see the flaws". Just because someone makes a critique doesn't mean that they're objectively right about the flaws they point out. For example, you think that heavy use of delayed attacks is a flaw, I disagree completely. But, people who just say "you're wrong, the game is perfect" are obviously wrong, fully agree there. I certain don't think that the game is flawless, I find large sections of the map very boring for example, I just disagree that delayed attacks are a flaw in the first place. For me, the "learning experience" is learning the timing of the attack in question, and how to incorporate that into the fight at large. It doesn't matter to me if the boss has multiple delayed attacks, because that just means that I have to pay closer attention to what they're doing, and learn more. I don't really care about the aspect of "surprise" in attack timing, and just find it fun and satisfying to learn every attack. This doesn't mean I strive to hitless every boss btw, but I find it much more fun to beat a boss after I know how to deal with every attack, even if I didn't successfully execute all of them. The one time I dislike delayed attacks is when a boss/enemy has multiple attacks with different delays but with almost identical tells. But that's incredibly rare, and the reason why I dislike scaly misbegotten specifically. I've also adapted a strategy of almost never dodging on reaction per default. When I see a new attack coming, I try to observe it, then try to dodge when I think it'll hit. This leads to me getting hit from rolling too late more often than rolling too early, but has made it easier for me to learn patterns. I personally find this approach very interesting, but know full well that not everyone does. And the last part of your reply makes it 100% clear to me that this is simply a matter of personal taste. I fully agree that the combat has strayed far from demon's souls and ds1, but in my eyes, that's a good thing, as I personally found demon's souls' combat (can't speak for ds1, haven't played it) much less interesting than ER. I don't consider it "throwing myself againt a wall", I see it as "learning from my misstakes", and the old combat (and ds3 partially) couldn't really provide that in the same way. But it's completely fine to simply prefer the old style, where combat itself wasn't as much of a focus. There's no right answer when it comes to taste, and ours seem to be complete opposites

After recently getting back into ER since my first playthrough was an absolute struggle fest as I was solely relying on dodging in combat, I reeeally wasn't into the whole idea of getting railed again in the DLC. And it's exactly because of delayed attacks, input reading etc ER left me with a bit of a bitter aftertaste at the end. However, after coming back, I honestly can say that dodge rolling in ER is designed to be a trap for people who have been conditioned to always use it from previous games. Since in my current run, I said fuck rolling and picked up the heaviest chunk of steel that passes for a shield, slapped on resistance/stamina talismans and... the game is on baby mode. It almost makes me feel guilty for playing this way. It is ridiculous how much more enjoyable the bosses become once you don't have to watch a boss twitch in order to not get obliterated.

The problem of ER, is that you arent properly equipped to deal with the game's speed and aggressiveness. Which is weird, considering we had Sekiro before this. They could have added some form of defense that made you better suited to deal with the game and they could have gone harder with the difficulty without it feeling unfair. I know we have tools and items but they rarely do matter. At the end, you overcome it with practice but you dont feel really proud of the achievement, like in previous games. I do think this will be the last From Software game with this style of combat. Or at least I hope so.

As much as I love Elden Ring there is 0 excuse for releasing an unfinished game. I think Elden Ring would've been even better with a few more months of development to give more variety to the dungeons & flesh out the mountaintop of the giants.
