I'm listening my way through Gigli recordings and this is well below his best. Not surprising i guess. Some of it has a "shouted" quality, and some a "gruff" sound. A far cry from the days when every note was pure and beautiful.

@@robcardinal8430 He incidentally was also my grandfather. I was 8 at the time and during a break in one of his arias I impulsively yelled out "Grandfather!!" in French. Except that I had accidentally used the word for "grandmother" in stead. The house went silent for a brief moment, he looked up toward the balcony and cracked a small smile and then resumed his singing. Later in his hotel room he laughed about it with my mother who by then had explained who the brash interrupter was. I had mild nightmares about it for years.😅

@@robcardinal8430 lol Yes, Pavarotti considered him to be the best lyric tenor of all time and said that he owes so much to him in learning his craft. He said he still listens to him when ever he's struggling with a piece.

Well... Retirement was the right decision. The audience is generous but the applause must be related to to what had been, not to what there is, because there is little left of his former vocal glory. In fact he was already as good as retired, when you give only a few concerts here and there you actually don't have much of a career still going on. He had had a 38-39 years career singing entire roles and this is not at all bad as far as longevity goes. In our misguided times fans seem to think the longer a career the greater the artist, but there is nothing admirable or distinguished about a long career per se. It's admirable only if one can keep the quality going on. This does not mean one should quit at the smallest sign of trouble, but the moment the problems become obvious, it's time to kiss the stage goodbye. It also depends a little on the singer's stock-in-trade - if it has been voice rather than musicianship, rhythmic definition or expressiveness, they have to quit when they unravel vocally. If it has been musicianship, taste, etc, they might keep on a little longer because as a rule the musicianship and dramatic force are enough to compensate for the loss of vocal beauty, though not for long, and only if tessitura and ability to do dynamics have not been severely compromised. Just my opinion.

A remarkable enterprise for its time, as is the 'Walküre' set which embodies about three-quarters of the first act. As the soloists who are named above do not appear on this record, I presume it is likewise part of a set. The Blüthner Orchestra operated until 1925 and developed into the later Berlin Symphony Orchestra. It worked with distinguished conductors such as Max von Schillings and seems to have specialised in giving career opportunities to very young players; its first leader was the 21-year-old Louis Persinger, and the future conductors Eugene Ormandy and Hermann Scherchen played in the orchestra while still in their teens.

Gigli is remembered by all who heard him sing. Even at the very end of his career the technique was still there. Pavarotti and Caruso were fans. See recollections of Pavarotti hearing Gigli in the early 50's. With the possible exception of Titi Schipa has there ever been a voice of such colour and beauty. The critics point to certain dramatic idiosyncrasies but that is the POINT, Gigli was unique. He was and remains a giant of the vocal art.
