As I listen, my ears are suggesting to me that Benny Goodman and Bud Freeman were on hand for this recording session. May I request that someone kindly supply a personnel listing? Kindest regards, from Richard Laine.

Did they mean to sing "in Nagasaki?" or did the composers make up a nonsensical word and by coincidence, it sounded like an actual Japanese city? (And yes, I did see "Three Little Words."

History fact: this was fence #4, the first official water jump, that was new and unusual to the cross-country competition at the Olympics. The water was 3 foot deep, so it was difficult for horses to land safely. Of 46 horses 18 fell on it. Unfortunately and infamously 2 horses had to be euthanized due to breaking their leg on the jump. These are ones of the few horse deaths that have happened during the Olympics. Fortunately safety regulations have changed since, but water jumps persist (typically not deep and never more than horse's knees deep, which is less than 2 feet). Cross-country is still one of the most dangerous sports in the world.

Didn't know there's a 1930 version of this. I have the original record of this on a single sided victor record but it's broken by my classmate while putting the pencil in the spindle hole to play it and accidentally angled the pencil and broke it in half. not even a week of having it. a damn shame.

Is anyone else wondering why they show Germans as successful and the rest are almost all falling off their horses??? 13:00 there is a DEEP and only some of the competitors know about it!!! CHEATING!

Very interesting recording-- I have had a copy of Ansermet's recording for decades and Stokowski's reording is quite a bit faster.

I’m LOVING all the dropped nosebands! And correctly fitted too! Maybe I’m aging myself, but I miss the days when we knew how (and why) to fit a dropped noseband. A brief course: The dropped noseband is NEVER fitted more tightly than necessary to keep it below the bit. Its function is NOT to crank the horse’s mouth shut, but to stabilize the relationship between the bit and the bars of the jaw by holding the bit closer to the tongue, and preventing excessive movement of it. The dropped noseband is a translational aid. It conveys some of the force of the bit onto the cartilage of the nose, conveying the message, “Give here too.” Wish shouting it from the rooftops would help…but alas, non.

HOWEVER: The needless use of the bat. One can see these horses (here depicted) are full of forward JOY in their going; ears forward, eyes hunting for the next fence. Why the bat? The hell is WRONG with people?

His great talents are wasted on Wagner. He was fantastic in such a variety of music. I have his films Metropolitan and Under Your Spell where he sings to creatures in an outside bath. Fine actor as well.

This record is to be played at 80 rpm and must be going at 90. Why do people keep posting edison and 78 recordings running way to fast. Strobe disc are very inexpensive. This is way too fast.

Tibbett in his prime here & although the entire role with its low tessitura for a voice like Tibbett‘s was not really an option he sings this Abschied as beautifully as his Wolfram which was his great complete Wagner role. He had always wished to have a go at Hans Sachs & this might have worked well for him in his best vocal period but Friedrich Schorr had a monopoly on this role at the MET at this time. Unfortunately after 1940 Schorr was no longer up to it & neither was Tibbett by then.

I actually have a copy of this record in my collection. Its one of 3 in my collection to have only 1 side! The other side is just smooth with no grooves and no label. This is one of my favorite records in my collection as well. Just an utterly beautifull song. It sends chills down the back of my neck! Thank you for posting this video. Its great to hear this song. I dont know if its true, but as i read online, Jascha Heifetz was born in 1901 and began playing violin early in life, this would make him 16 yesrs old when he made this and his other first recordings in 1917! He truly is a master!

Cruelty! Horses beaten

In fact. But is it today very much better? I don't want to excuse the cruelty at that times with my statement. But have the people learned? I noticed 'dog collars' which give dogs electrical shocks if they bark not long ago.
@ezire
@ezire 11 ай бұрын
Yes, historically horses were whipped. Not just in sports, everywhere. In carriages, in stalls, races, in ag work. A whip was not considered a cruelty unless there were marks. Then, something interesting happened - this visible act of beating was replaced with much more enduring and more effective way of subduing horses to the human will: the rollkur and the pressure/release techniques with no ability to escape (e.g. in round pens). No whip, just a lot of terror and pain till the horse gives up. There. Trained.
