What "is" the foam form? Is it to retain the radiant heat? Does it compress any after you put weight on it?

They put barium carbonate in concrete for saltwater. Why don't you guys put it in the high traffic and salt usage areas?

4000 psi, wire mesh, micro-fiber in the mix, water reducer, 5-6'' thick, air-entrained, with overcast/cool moist curing weather : this patio will last forever. Like sealer idea (and wonder if the crew comes back to do this). Might be good follow up .

So it sounds like you do a lot of repeat business with this customer. If he wasn't a repeat customer, and not likely to be one, like someone building their own home, would you bother to bid the job? I hear that it can be a problem with self builds. They don't have the time for you or they will significantly overcharge you to make it worth their time. And by the homeowner doing all the formwork, would that make it worse or better? I'm just trying to get an idea of what real world challenges I may face doing a self build with regards to trades in general. Hope you are having a Merry Christmas!✌️

Nice Job Mike, I like the water reducer idea and I’m with you on the rear dump truck is were it’s at. I’ve been in the trade 40 years and I love it when I see a crew who knows how to put some mud down without having to scrub your ass off. It shows your experience. I have a few different techniques but for the most part you are spot on the way I have always done things and have evolved to over time, trial and error. And yes the water on the truck is for you to use I have always figured. There are few drivers out there that will get possessive of it when they start to get low and then it’s just a compromise of who needs it worse. I’ve done my work mostly in Washington.

I would like to know what is the error in flatness of the slab when finished. Assuming a perfect graded form what is the maximum deviation of the slab. I have done small slabs with an error of less than a 1/4" working at night and using a laser to flatten the high spots.

With the water reducer they use, I bet they’re getting some pretty high “F” numbers for flatness and level. Not quite at superflat tolerances but this isn’t that kind of work.

@Readymixer-eo5pj

They have a couple options. Most of the time they'll pour large blocks with waste concrete. If the block molds are full then they'll either dump it in a large pit or the ground to be smashed up later and used for gravel.

Whenever we have big blobs of concrete left over on a job, we always stick a rebar stirrup in it while it’s wet, so it can be picked up easily with a forklift or crane and thrown in the dumpster.

This has water reducer in the mix, without it the slump would be around a 3 so a very low WC ratio.

It’s rewarding for a homeowner to be able to do this, but this guy is not saving any money having a licensed plumber do concrete work when he could be out there getting top dollar for doing plumbing and heating.

These guys make some incredibly hard work look easy. This home owner is an experienced contractor, and his experience has taught him to use experts. It is like an orchestra conductor. She might know every detail about how to make a violin, flute, or piano sound right, but without the thousands of hours practicing on each instrument that the performers have done, it would not come out right. He might feel he can place all his forms and rebar correctly, and if it takes him longer to get it right than Mike could do it; that is fine, but once that concrete starts coming out of the truck, everything has to be done precisely, quickly, in the right sequence, with good decisions (like water reducer and correct calculations on volume of concrete), all while under a lot of pressure to hurry up. If the concrete starts to cure faster than they get it placed, it becomes a $20,000 disaster instead of $10,000 savings.
