Earlier this morning I listened to the documentary about David’s life and the tragic events surrounding his time in this country which then lead to his heartbreaking death. May he rest in peace, bless his soul 🙏🏼

So beautiful and inspirational will always think of David when I think of or see the beautiful hibiscus. When I was about 11 the house I was living in on Cape Town had two huge red hibiscus bushes can still see them today.

I am so glad to have been exposed to this man's insights, wisdom and sharp observations on society in the 70s. His analysis of racial politics and institutions is without equal. All of these poems I would listen to regularly through his albums.

I've bought his music, read his poetry (Sonny's Letter is still the most powerful piece I've ever read) and I was fortunate enough to meet him while in Barbados in 1981 at the Carifesra Event. He is a such an inspiration to thousands of people, perhaps millions. This interview is an important archive which should be shown in schools around the UK - without exception.

The maquette of Yinka's 'Hibiscus Rising' was on display at The Tetley Centre for Contemporary Art until January 2023. It's now installed at Leeds City Museum as part of the new "Overlooked" exhibition at the museum, where it will remain until 25th June 2023. More information on this important exhibition is here museumsandgalleries.leeds.gov.uk/events/leeds-city-museum/overlooked/

I am so different, a white man born in London by the NHS bringing my parents to work in Britain, so privileged to be a fellow Londoner with brother Linton, what a time to be alive! I was privileged to meet him once. Thanks for this video.

Bumped into Linton in Streatham around 10 years ago. I was just walking down the high street, when I suddenly realized I had just walked past Mr Johnson. So I turned around and said "Legend", he was gracious and polite.

The cruel death of David Oluwale occurred a few months after my family moved from Leeds to rural Huntingdonshire. We kept in touch with what was happening in Leeds, including the tragic unfolding of the Oluwale story, which has remained in my memory ever since. I returned to Leeds, to University, as the trial of the police officers began, and followed the events intently. I was appalled by the outcome. For many years I thought I had been one of only a few to have been in emotional turmoil from what had been done to this poor man, but only a few months ago discovered the plan to unveil a plaque, and realised I was not alone. Thank you to those who keep his memory alive.
