Hey! I've been trying to track down a custom map I played a few years ago, maybe in 2020 or 2021, and since I see that you've been playing a lot of Half-Life Alyx maps lately, I'm wondering if you might be able to help me. I don't remember the name, but I think I remember it being part of a collection, like possibly a Vaultmaps competition (not 100% certain on this). It had a few really striking features, namely there being some sort of custom voiced Vortigaunt shopkeeper near the beginning who I couldn't understand, and a fight with Combine at the end where you could see their location through walls represented with a sort of bluish cloud effect. That fight took place in a room where the combine were coming from a raised platform and shooting down at you, where you had some obstacles to hide behind. The whole map looked like it took place underground, using the sewer brick texture on most of its walls. I think there might have been a custom vending machine mechanic as well. It was a really unique map, so I'm hoping to find it again. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I can't recall having played such a map. The Vort and the glow mechanic is pretty unique. Maybe from the "One Room" challenge - I heaven't played those maps yet. Maybe you can find it in Skummeh's list docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HefptbgP2pwxDCVITIH5ax8bJ0LFxn6NTVcoM8e6SQ4/edit#gid=0

@@lambdarokh I actually managed to track it down, it was "Infestation Cleaning" by Adesi, for the Vaultmaps Xen Infestation competition. The one video of it I found on KZbin doesn't show the glow effect, because as I recall it only appeared in your left eye and I guess the desktop view is from your right eye. For the demo I simply used an overlay. I created a separate addon that contains the compiled sounds (vsnd files). Existing soundevents can be overridden. Here is an example from my M1 Garand "ping" replacement. @@burgerbacon-uf5fp I'm using the Hammer Editor that is shipped with the Workshop tools for Half Life Alyx. Either wav or mp3 format is fine. I use the asset browser, go to the properties of the mp3/wav file and click Recompile.

I activate it in some maps. Mostly for feedback to the creators. Here I did not even get the grabbity gloves - so there was no hud anyways.

Thanks man. I think that there are a lot of unfinished maps outside there. I can totally understand that one needs to take a break from mapping in order to not loose the fun at it. I just took one recently and tbh. playing some older contest/map-jam maps somehow brought me back into mapping again.

Quick question, why don't you include the HUD UI elements on the screen? Every other KZbinr does.

The spectator UI is not visible in VR while playing and the viewer sees what I see. It is more immersive and sometimes a good challenge. For example the "Economical Gunman" challenge where I even count the bullets. I only have it activated for some Merciless runs or when I playtest maps for explicit feedback. But I'm not crazy about it - I could make some runs while having it activated.

I play half life alyx on my quest 3 using virtual desktop app. Quality is amazing. Input lag is somewhat noticeable, but gameplay is definitely enjoyable.

Thanks! I also watched Half Life Alyx playthroughs before I got the Valve Index. Totally get you with the price thing. After >1000hrs of playing HL-A and even more with the Hammer Tools (2.2k hrs in total) I can say that it was absolutely worth it. I never felt regret about getting it and apart from the main campaign there is so much awesome workshop content. Also I can play all Half Life parts and episodes in VR which is amazing.
