Mark, WHAT AN AWESOME DOCUMENTARY!!! The subject, the people, the story, everything. And the technique. Filming, time lapse, drone shots, editing, music EVERYTHING!!! So motivational. Not only do I want to travel halfway around the world and be part of that community to assist in building a turk. I’m also super inspired to learn how to make a documentary. Someday I hope to hit the level you have produced. Well done.

Wow, thank you! Those are huge compliments! I'm stoked to hear the film left you inspired. Sometimes the subject matter, the characters and the resources all happen to align which was true for this documentary. Couldn't have made without the generosity from so many different people including Erik's family, turk members, local film crews, the production company I was working for which kindly let me borrow their gear... It takes a village to make a documentary!

All great advice, but after you have the text / storyboard laid out on what is essentially a Kanban board, how do you tie that quote to the source clip? Especially down to such granular level as paragraph, sentence, phrase or word? I understand the importance of creating the text edit, but I’m unclear how you translate that to all the source clips.
@johanssonfilms
@johanssonfilms 4 күн бұрын
That's where the timestamps on Rev come into play. You can even go through rev, highlight the various paragraphs and export an "EDL" file which you can then pull into resolve. Otherwise if you don't want to pay to use REV and you're a Davinci resolve user, you can take advantage of the transcribing feature to convert your interview timeline into text. Now you can search for the paragraphs you have in your text edit within your timeline. I hope that makes sense?

The "why" is where all the juice is! Selfishly when you pursue the why as a filmmaker it becomes such a deep and fulfilling experience. You feel like you get a backdoor entrance into people's lives that you never would be able to otherwise. Good luck on the journey! It'll be tough at times. You'll want to give up, but keep going, it's always so worth it in the end!

I really think you would spend a lot less times using smart bins and perhaps keywords. Much faster and if you change anything after your first selection (assigning a new color to a shot you forgot the first time for example), it's automatically added to your smart bin.
@johanssonfilms
@johanssonfilms 14 күн бұрын
I hear ya. And I think that's a totally valid point. I just hate bins to be honest. Even if there's slight inefficiencies in this process of using timelines, it just gels better with my brain. I wish I could embrace smart bins more but every time I've tried I've just gotten frustrated. You've convinced me to at least give it another go though!

I think this applies to 3D Art as well. We get so focused on what we do rather than why it exists. Realised this minutes after doing a 3D Art piece on Clamps from Futurama. There was no context, no story. Just a robot in a room. Now stuck with my most complex robot so far, Robot Stitch, I struggle to figure out what to render with the 3D model. Following your advice, I think I should just write a short story behind it, which will give me some ideas on context and what to do with the model

that is so interesting, also i suppose it's kind of the same with architecture in 3d modeling, understanding why does the wall have to go that way, or the way light reflects , and why..

What’s your thought process on how your choose your Opening shot? Not sure if you’ve already done a video on that but I could really use some tips on that .
@johanssonfilms
@johanssonfilms 27 күн бұрын
That’s a great question. I always find it’s easier to tackle the intro as the final step in the edit, that way you already know exactly what the film is about. For the opening shot you want something that’s both going to grab your attention but also is relevant to the overall subject of the film. There’s no perfect answer since it also depends on what medium people plan on watching it. If it’s a film that’s going to only exist online, then you have a lot of work to do to catch people’s attention early on, so you might lean towards a faster paced intro. Whereas if your film is going to be shown at festivals in theatres where the audience is somewhat forced to sit through your intro, you can get away with a slower, more evolving shot. It also hinges a lot of the topic of your film. Some films have beautiful cinematography to tell the story, others may rely more on the narrative/interviews/archival footage. I hope that somewhat helps? It’s hard to give direct advice without knowing the subject of your film. Good luck!

Definitely gonna steal some of this organization workflow! Maybe a dumb question - but I'd be curious to see how, after all of this is done, you go about pulling footage from each of these bins and timelines and what not to add to your actual edit. Currently I'm using stacked timelines with ALL of the footage on the bottom timeline and the edit on the top timeline, but I'd love to get a little more organized.
@johanssonfilms
@johanssonfilms Ай бұрын
Oh hey guys! Thanks for watching! I totally remember watching your videos like 3 years ago, they helped through a lot of questions I had in the early days of my filmmaking! So cool that you’re still crushing it! That more or less sums up how I end up working with those timelines as well. At the end of the day you do have to still scroll back through your selects to find shots. This process at least helps narrow down the search so I know where everything is. Sometimes what I’ll do is if I know I need a lot of a certain type of footage (say lifestyle for example), I’ll just copy a big chunk of the selects stringout into my edit timeline and mess with it there. But this is kinda where the tidy organisation meets the chaos of creativity 😅
@codyandvictoria

The good old days of the camera tutorial boom HAHA. Now I'm stoked to watch other's do the tutorial work as I try to step up my own storytelling abilities. Super helpful though - I think just organizing things a little more will definitely improve our process.
@johanssonfilms
@johanssonfilms Ай бұрын
@codyandvictoria hahaha yeah I totally get that. Camera stuff is so clickable.. but so dry to make.. If you’re working on better story telling then I highly recommend breaking down your dialog/interviews into themes/ideas/different buckets. Then you get out of the world of boring linear story telling and into creating narrative arcs. It makes the whole process so much faster!
@codyandvictoria
@codyandvictoria Ай бұрын
@@johanssonfilms you hit the nail on the head. I’m struggling with that boring linear storytelling right now. Like always just hiking in to a location, camping, and then climbing and leaving. Hello bro you Can make a tutorial on the mixing vocal in DaVinci resolve 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
@johanssonfilms
@johanssonfilms Ай бұрын
I’m not the best person to ask about vocal treatment to be honest. But I could point you in the right direction. Depending on the type of vocal, you’ll want to look into a couple different techniques: Compression and EQ. Compression allows you to even out the loud and quiet parts of your vocal make it easier to understand and clearer in the mix, and then the EQ can be used to sculpt the voice to make it more pleasing and less tiring on your ear. For example, you can remove harshness in the high frequencies of the voice or give someone’s voice a deeper quality by boosting the bass. I hope that helps a little!

@johanssonfilms

I have, but I find it’s a bit clunky for larger projects because you end up leaving everything that you haven’t selected in bins, so if there’s anything I missed in my initial selects then I’m back into the bins again. It’s why I like having everything in a timeline then going from there. That way I never have to be in bins again.. as you can tell I’m very bin-adverse 😂 I would love to be able to make the cut page work for my workflow since it has the potential to be so fast, but it just doesn’t quite click with my brain!
