I completely agree… I always feel 6L PD Sling is small while 10L PD Sling feels unnecessarily too big. I think they need to make 8L PD Sling.

The 10L looks like a diaper bag. I like the old 10L design way better. I broke the zipper and they couldn't replace it wmthe old design so they sent me the new 10L. I hated it, sold it and used that money to rebuy the old design off the used market

I'm facing the same dilemma for a day bag to go about in my local city (not Italy!). But in your case, where you're traveling halfway around the world to places you'll likely never visit again, I'd suggest the 10L. I think it's better to have the extra space to carry the kit that you want plus maybe room for some souvenirs and snacks (you'll probably be doing a lot of walking). Plus, I've come to the conclusion that I prefer to be constrained by weight rather than volume, because weight is a soft limit (it just gets progressively less comfortable) but volume is a hard limit (either it fits or you leave it behind).
@Richard_LutzАй бұрын
Snack pockets are very underrated. They should come standard on all bags and should be exclusively used for that purpose. Full stop.

The 10L PD is perfection. I use it on the daily for outings, with or without camera. It acts like a small one shoulder backpack when you want it too. It is PERFECT for airport because it is always small enough to be considered as a hand carry that slides ON TOP of your carry-on 4 wheeler luggage. You toss your passport, laptop, headphones and water in it and off you go through security checks. during the day in the city it's easier to access than a backpack to get your wallet and pay for stuff or stash trinkets. it's so good.... my wife stole mine for her business trips (not cam gear) and I had to buy a second one

I'm a 66 year old man in reasonably good shape new to 'group tours'. The thought of being restricted to a specific itinerary for 2 weeks sounds like a type of hell I'm not interested in. But this 'in between' types has very much interest. A few questions for anyone who may have do any of these 'my way' tours. 1) once you are dropped on at your hotel, how do you get to the particular 'things' you want to do in the city? are they typically within a few miles , hence walkable? do you need rent cars? 2) how do you procure tickets for the 'things' (like the tram ride in the video)? does the tour guide help with this, or are you on your own? Many thanks!
@Richard_LutzАй бұрын
Unlike the states, Europe is extremely walkable. If things are too far for walking you may be able to catch an Uber even though the language barrier will be difficult. We also had no problem booking tram rides since the Alps aren't nearly as popular as other European travel destinations. I just did a Italian My-Way tour and I found the trip in the Apls to be much more enjoyable and less crowded. Finally, the guides can give recommendations, but they will not plan things for you. That's your responsibility. Personally, I would do this trip again in a heartbeat.

I have the exact same 6L and 10L you showed. I also have the previous version of the 10L, which is actually smaller by default, but can expand at the front. I expected the new 10L to be the same as the original 10L, but no - it is huge. I am now considering replacing the 10L sling with the 20L backpack, which is not too dissimilar thanks to the side access. It is only slightly bigger, but is easier to carry - the 10L feels awkward because it's so big. A shame, because the 10L hits the sweet spot for what it can carry.

you should try wotancraft pilot 7l sling. I previously used a peak design sling 6l, and had the same problem as you. where I felt the bag was too stiff and small. then i bought wotancraft pilot 7l, and i was very surprised. Even though the size is similar to the Peak Design 6L, the Wotancraft feels much more spacious. Apart from that, Wotancraft also provides a modular pouch that can be attached to the side of the bag.

I have both the 6L and 10L PD slings. I have two thoughts on your dilemma.. 1. The 10L will have space for things like a light jacket and/or snacks or a small water bottle. If you're going to be walking around cities all day, it might pay to consider the non-photography things that you may need each day, 2. If you are primarily going to Italy to take photos, then ideally, the majority of the time you will spend walking around the cities, and thus you will have your camera in-hand and not in a bag. if this is the case, then the 6L should be fine. Final thoughts would be to take the 10L. You never know when you might need extra space (food, souvenirs, etc.) and you will always have space to store your camera if it's not always going to e in your hands. Hope to see some footage of your trip! Cheers!

Thanks! It's going to be a great trip. The only concern I have now is fitting my Peak Design 30L travel backpack under the seat on my flight from Heathrow to Rome. I'll be flying on British Airways and the dimensions of a personal item are smaller on their flights versus many U.S. airlines.
@YuckyDarren14 ай бұрын
Go with the 10L. I just took mine to Belgium and Germany and it fit everything in it I needed with room to put extra stuff that I may have picked up along the way. I also have the 6L and just like you, it gets cramped quick. And although they are supposed to be similar, the 6L's front pocket is nowhere near as big or useful as the 10L's front pocket. It may be because you have to stuff the main compartment so much that it tends to bulge into the front pocket leaving you with almost no room...maybe enough for a very slim wallet and a filter or two, but thats pushing it. Also, I didn't feel weird at all carrying around the 10L with me everywhere I went. It was great and offered so much more peace of mind. I hope my experience here helps. I'm definitely bringing my 10L with me any time I travel.
@Richard_Lutz4 ай бұрын
This is great to know. I'm deinately leaning towards the 10L over others. I sent the PD 6L and the Nomatic Peter McKinnon 8L slings back to Amazon. The last piece of the puzzle is my personal item. I'm planning on using a TravelPro Maxlite 5 as my suitcase that I will put in the overhead bin. This will mean my PD Travel 30L backpack will need to beneath the seat in front of me, but I'm concerned it will be too big to fit; especially on a British Airways flight. What bag did you use when going to to Belgium was it just the 10L sling or did you carry this in a larger bag? Finally did you have a suitcase as a carry on? Looking forward to hearing any feedback or advice.

@@Richard_Lutz I only ever travel with a carry-on and a personal item. My personal item was the Peak Design 10L sling which fits perfectly underneath the seat in front of me. My carry on is always one of two Tom Bihn bags; either the 45L Techonaut or the 35L Synik. Both are great.

I also have the 6L Sling, and I agree-it gets packed, almost to the point of bursting. I’ve gone back and forth on this, thinking a sling should be small, minimal, and lightweight, while anything beyond that should be handled by a backpack. I tend to favor a two-lens kit, so I often carry a small prime lens like the Nikon 40mm f2 paired with a telephoto like the 135mm f1.8. While that setup works for the 6L Sling, it still feels overly cramped. Because of this, I recently bought the Peak Design 13L Everyday Messenger. I thought it would be a good option for when I want the convenience of a sling but also need space for a 70-200mm lens. The Everyday Messenger can expand from 13L to 16L, depending on how you close the top, which is a nice feature. However, I find that I tend to fill it up just because there’s more room. This brings me back to the same dilemma: 6L Sling or a backpack? For family vacations, I’ve been going with just one lens, and it’s so freeing. As a photographer, there’s always the desire to bring the “right” gear, but doing so can create a barrier between enjoying the vacation and making photographs. I’ve brought telephoto lenses on trips before, but realistically, what did I end up photographing? Mostly cool looking buildings and Mickey Mouse on stage far away. Once home, those shots of architecture or stage performances aren’t nearly as rewarding as the ones of my family enjoying our time together. In fact, if anyone takes their family on vacation and comes home with more photos of meaningless buildings than photos of their family, I feel this was a big swing and miss. That’s why I’ve shifted my perspective from “photographing the vacation” to “photographing my family on vacation.” For this, one lens is enough, and I usually choose my Nikon 40mm f2 (I know you shoot Canon, but I’m talking about a mid-range small prime lens, which I’m sure Canon has great options for). So, if I were heading out on vacation next week, I’d pack one camera and one lens in the 6L Sling, which would also leave room for a water bottle.

Thanks for your feedback. I'm still on the fence. I actually may be returning the 10l sling and get the Peak Design 20l backpack. I realized that my 30l travel backpack may not fit under the seat on a British Airways flight. I'm not sure I want to gate check my luggage between London and Rome if it came to it.

I have the Peak Design backpack also, the Zip version. LOL Sheesh, I have a bag problem. I thought the shelf system of their backpacks would be great, but it just means everything fits loosely in there on the shelves and rattles around no matter what you do. You could consider getting an RFID pouch/sleeve to put your card in. This will widen the possible options, and you can use it with all your other bags or in your pocket?

That's a great tip. FYI if you didn't know, the LockPickingLawyer tested a bunch of slash-resistant bags a little while back and found that they are _only_ resistant to slashing (a.k.a. the least effective method), not cutting, puncturing, or slicing (a.k.a. using a knife blade the way it's supposed to be used). It seems that no fabric will resist intentional slicing from a knife, so you need a steel cable embedded in the strap to properly protect yourself.
