I’ve had a Shinobi II for the past couple of weeks or so and it’s been an absolutely frustrating experience. The pros: color accuracy. Low latency video. Build quality. Compactness. Touch to focus is cool - when it works. The cons: unstable. Clunky, choppy UI. Overheats easily. Communication issues and general bogging down of camera operations. Unstable. Overall just disappointing. I’m surprised that my “budget” Viltrox monitor works more reliably. I’m past my return period so I’m hoping some future firmware updates make it better. Or just usable.

To be fair its not only you, i feel lik shinobi was made for people with really small fingers, and thats why i skipped it in first place... and you should have too ;) So next time you want to buy monitor, look at interface and how close those buttons on monitor are one to each other, it will be a easy giveaway if product will work for you no matter how much you like it or not

If it's your first lens for that mount/camera, I would say 35mm, hands down. The 56mm is great, but chances are it's going to be much to zoomed in for general shooting and you'll find yourself having to back up and away far away from your subject a lot of times.

Not including active cooling makes it probably unusable in the summer. My OG Shinobi gets so hot that it physically hurts to use the touch screen. These files are based on a proprietary Canon format and will not work in Lightroom. But you can add them to raw photos in Canons free alternative to Lightroom. Digital photos professional. For an ultracompact monitor I am loving my Shinobi 2- paired with the Sony FX30 - great focus and camera control, power through (I power the entire rig via a dummy D-tap from a D-Tap battery to increase my camera's 'footprint' and weight for much better ergonomics and hand-held shooting IMHO). I love the EL Zone - on my monitor it is reliable and consistent- not sure why you are having problems with your false colors- weird - defective unit?? The one simple fix I would like to see is the ability to display and control shutter ANGLE (now that the FX 30 has that ) - currently the Shinobi 2 only recognizes and controls shutter speed- not a huge deal as I rarely adjust shutter angle while shooting anyway... A 2nd way to deliver power would be nice - but obvi that will increase size and weight - and I am sure some miss HDMI passthrough- not an issue for my workflow. Bottom line is for me and the FX 30 the best monitor I have used to date!

@thomasfransson3 күн бұрын
That's correct, there's no hood for the P6X which can be problematic in bright/direct sunlight if you’re not in control over the angle and positioning of your subject. I'm also a fan of the HDMI 2.0 on the P6X, but do keep in mind that it’s only a 1920x1080 resolution on the screen (like all monitors) and that you can set your HDMI out (on camera) to 1080 instead of 4K and monitor higher frame rates than 60fps on the DC-550 if that's what's holding you back. Whatever monitor you end up going with I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

@thomasfransson4 күн бұрын
I really hope it's a glitch with the fw since they announced EL Zone in October and I ran that fw update. But, there's been a few manufacturers who've added EL Zone to their monitors only to get a cease and desist from Ed Lachman because of the patent. So maybe that's the case, I don't know. I've not had any issues with ghosting though. I run all my camera HDMI out on 1080 though, so maybe it's a 4K issue? Let me know when you've received yours.

@@thomasfransson I updated my Shinobi II to 11.03 and lost all the false color other than ATOMOS, but it seems the upgrade removed the "Camera Output" settings. Once I put it back to my camera (Sony, S-Log3, and S-Gamut3.cine) then all the false color options including EL Zone are back.
@thomasfransson3 күн бұрын
Interesting. Camera output is still here on mine and If I set it to HLG I can access the EL and Arri, but not in LOG. And I can't set the monitor in a mode that correctly displays the actual exposure and levels in camera. I guess it's one step forward and one step back. But good to know EL Zone is still in there somewhere :D
@thomasfransson3 күн бұрын
Loaded some LUT's onto the monitor just now to see if I could get around it that way (typically run the luts in camera for consistency across various displays and applications) No luck yet though regarding matching levels. And another frustrating thing - I can't see which LUT is loaded to which memory slot. (unless I still have the memory card in the monitor and tap the folder icon to "overwrite" the LUT)
@thomasfransson4 күн бұрын
My final thoughts of the Atomos Shinobi II - While the Shinobi II has potential and a lot of the issues can hopefully be fixed with firmware updates. I would also like to see the UI re-worked, it’s difficult to adjust like screen brightness, zebras, gamma, gain and so forth. Dialing in precise values is very difficult on the super tiny sliders attached to these features. Just because the screen is small doesn’t mean everything has to be small. It’s also a bit frustrating that features like crop guides and anamorphic de-squeeze forces you to cycle through all the options to turn off the feature. If you tap one time too many, you’ll be tapping away like your life depended on it to get back to normal or your desired setting. My copy as seen in the video also have great variances when it comes to touch response. Sometimes the waveforms+scopes can’t be turned off via the UI and features that you access at the bottom of the screen can also be unresponsive at times. I’m not sure if this is fixable with FW. And then we have the whole thing about the EL Zone and Arri false colors not being available. Maybe that could be related to licensing? As it is now with firmware 11.13.00 It’s a tiny 1500 nit monitor that's relatively light weight. The camera control and touch focus can be hit or miss and the on-board features too in terms of functionality and reliability. So as a tiny 5.2” monitor with 1500 nit brightness - YES, as a reliable tool for critical shooting - NO. There’s other more affordable monitors that will outpace the Shinobi II in a lot of areas and be more reliable. They may not have all the features (some do) but they’re reliable, easier to work with and don’t offer any unpleasant surprises down the road.

Thank you! Oh, that's interesting, I thought it would become easy to pick one after watching the tests and taking each lens strengths and weaknesses into consideration in the wrap-up. @thomasfransson4 күн бұрын
Hi Paula, thank you so much, this made me happy to hear. To fix your problem, in the camera menu, go all the way down to the briefcase symbol (Entry no.7) - In this menu, scroll down to EXTERNAL OUTPUT (11) Here, go to HDMI Info. Display (53/54) and set it to OFF Side not this is also where you find the HDMI Resolution settings if you want to shoot 4k120fps and the monitor isn't displaying an image in those recording settings. Change the HDMI resolution to 1080 instead of 4K and it should work. The monitor only has a 1920x1080 resolution anyway so you're not losing any quiality on your monitor by doing this. This whole problem with the screen that goes black when plugging in something to HDMI is something that all Sony shooters are a bit frustrated with. It's not specific to the FX3, it's the same behavior on all Sony cameras across the board and the fix/workaround is pretty well hidden ;) Anyway, hope this helps, enjoy your new monitor.

The Portkeys LH5P is brighter and offers wireless camera control. Based on your needs I don't know if that's something that will be more useful to you than wireless video?

I've not used the ai micro but from what I think I've seen mentioned when using a device like that hooked up to a phone or tablet is that there's no way of adjusting the signal on the device as it’s a digital connection. So any tweaks or adjustments must be done in post. I have used the Rode Wireless GO II connected to my computer at few times for quick pickup recordings and conference calls. That has worked well once I've set it up in the sound settings. Picking my headphones as out and the Rode Wireless GO II as input. And sometimes this needs to be done in the software being used for the call as well in it's audio settings.

Down the road you might want to investigate the Behringer UV1 for these auditons. It's a channel strip with xlr preamp, compressor and other effects that also have a built-in usb audio interface. I wouldn't say there's any major differences technically. But practically, given the 2000 nits and sun hood on the X2 vs 1000 nits and no hood on the P6X there's not much of a competition when it comes to daytime exterior shoots. Thanks!

1000 nits is roughly what any modern smartphone runs on, iPhone, Samsung So that’s a pretty great yardstick for outdoor brightness. If you could only get 1 for video and photography, which would you get this Sigma or native Sony 16-55? Thank you!
@thomasfransson7 күн бұрын
Haven't tried the Sony. After doing some research it looks like it wasn't necessarily worth the price which is more than the Sigma art 24-70 f2.8 and other full frame options. It's not weather sealed, the focus breathing is supposed to be worse than the Sigma 18-50mm and Tamron 17-70. And it’s not supported by Sony’s focus breathing compensation (at least not at the time of this video) Optically it also didn't seem to warrant the extra money compared to the Sigma or Tamron 17-70 f2.8 which is more expensive than the 18-50 But, it has optical stabilization and it's weather sealed unlike the Sigma and Sony. After using both the Sigma and Tamron I'm also skeptical regarding any major differences in AF performance between the Sony and the 3rd party lenses. The Sony might be better or not? But given the af performance of the Sigma and Tamron i can't say that you would find them bad in any way. So in fewer words, I'm struggling to find the extra value that would justify paying 2x the money and get the Sony over the Sigma. Or Tamron for that matter.
@precambrian_rabbit7 күн бұрын
@@thomasfransson I really appreciate the response. Makes sense. I got a Sigma half a year ago because I couldn't justify (or afford at that moment) paying the double but I constantly think that Sony could be sharper at a wide angle and that having 16mm is more convenient. Maybe that adapter isn't compatible with the Sigma 18-35 have you looked to see if there's any lists of compatible lenses? Is there a usb port for firmware updates on the adapter... I know a lot of adapters stopped working with the new 5.0 fw for Sony FX30 (I'm still on fw 2.xx) In general adapters can be tricky and picky so it's always a good idea to do some research based on lenses. That's how I ended up going with the mc-11 for this specific lens. It doesn't work well with any other ef lens I own. But this one was the one i was most interested in continuing to use.

Have you ever had to deal with feelworlds customer service after a purchase?
@thomasfransson10 күн бұрын
Yea, once when I did a firmware upgrade many years ago. That was on email and was really smooth and quick. BUT! These days I think a lot of companies have moved their priority to social media direct messages like instagram and facebook as it's more direct and probably quicker on both ends with follow up custions and so forth. At least that's my experience in general. I could be wrong though...

@thomasfransson i reached out to them via email and still no response. Touched base on socials and got a response immediately but not to the issues just thst they would inform the after sales team and I still got no response, very frustrating

Hopefully they'll circle back to you. If not you could always poke them and ask about the current state of the matter. The time difference and workload often drags these things out. So it's always a good idea to be active, polite and have initiative.

Thank you for these picture profiles! :) May I ask for a tutorial on how to get these picture profiles onto the canon g7x mark ii please? I was able to get these profiles onto my canon m200 but for some reason it doesn't work for my g7xmii. Thank you!!

My pleasure, for you GX camera you'll need a different Canon program called "Picture style registration tool" I know, they outdid themselves on both the name and logic on that one 🙈

@@thomasfransson Hi!! So I tried to but my MacBook M1 Pro said: "Safari could not download the file “psrtm1.0.1-installer.dmg.zip” because the disk “Macintosh HD” doesn’t have enough free space" Which is weird cause this is an almost new laptop with very little space used...will contact Canon support, thank you!!
@thomasfransson10 күн бұрын
That sounds weird. You could try downloading it from another Canon site. Europe, north/south america, asia in the meanwhile if Canon takes time to get back to you.

I love the Viltrox lenses. I already own the two Pro lenses 27mm and 75mm but want to have a lighter daily carry for street photography. I have been a bit indecisive about whether to go for this lens, the older Viltrox 33mm f1.4 or the Sigma 30mm f1.4. Your video has now made ny mind up and I will be buying this lens. Thankyou

I appreciate this video. Many praise this lens, and for such a low price it makes me wonder. If they can produce such a quality lens at that low price point, then why does Canon, Nikon and others charge so much? Are we paying more because of the name? I don’t know. Someone tell me.
@thomasfransson12 күн бұрын
There's obviously several differences from the structure of the lens, r&d, quality of the glass, level of precision and cleanliness during manufacturing and so forth rolled in to the price. Once you reach a certain point, a 10% improvement can be a 50% price increase.
