One thing i have to say about this team when it comes to defense is they always wanna gravitate to guys who are like a character hire. And that works fine on offense but we need some psycho dudes in here that flip a switch on the field and are trying to mess dudes up until the final whistle. Theyre scared to bring in guys who might say something wild on twitter or get a flag for an unsportsmanlike and they end up avoiding the real deal. Arron Donald was like picking dude up and holding them off the ground to assert dominance (cough cough Devonta Freeman) you cant be dominant on defense with a bunch of guys who would rather high five an opponent than slap em in the mouth

I wouldnt really call it scapegoating when it comes to Jimmy Lake...Considering he is the one responsible for putting an absurdly small front 4 in which two guys are stand-ups on the edge + the constant soft/off coverage on crucial downs its no wonder why the defense cant stop the run. This defense is small and unaggressive in tackling compared to other teams. Hes basically just under manning the Dline resulting in lack of significant pressure + making it easy for teams to run the ball for more 3rd and short or 3rd and medium. Then once its 3rd down he plays everyone back making it and easy pitch and catch for any QB because they have all the time in the world vs a 4 man front and the whole rest of the defense is giving up the first down for free or cant make a solo tackle ahead of the sticks. I think their needs on defense fit with where I think the team is at this stage and what I think their long-term plan is. The plan, as I see it, is to be a playoff contender with Cousins for two years while continuing the roster rebuild which I think a lot of fans mistakenly thought was complete but looking at the roster realistically really wasn’t. And then when Penix takes over, they would have a more rounded roster to make a Super Bowl push and vault themselves into legit high-end contention.

The Falcons defense has plenty of talent. This has got to be a coaching or scheme issue. I think that Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator could turn them into a respectable defense.

Kirk will shred zone defenses, but when they use cover 0/1 concepts, your receivers can be ineffective running simple routes, and Kirk is throwing to a 2" window all day. Same thing happened in Minnesota in '22, O'Connell's HC debut. Vikings got whipped by Dallas 40-3 in the midst of a 12-5 season. The offense had the same issues with zone vs man coverage, even with Justin Jefferson (always double). O'Connell adjusted his play call, and by Thursday of that same week, the team beat 3 top5 defenses the rest of the season. Knowing when to call screens and scheming guys open vs any defensive look is an art form, Zac just needs to adjust like O'Connell did. Too bad Kirk had the worst defense in the league that year.

The offense is not consistent enough to carry them through the regular season without issue. Defense and Special teams have to contribute and they are both playing poorly.
