I tried playing with a guitar. It was bad. How do you tune for that?
@fundybanjosАй бұрын
Banjo is double D and the guitar is playing out of D and capoed at the second fret. Is that what you're looking for?
@BanjoRose_down-pickerАй бұрын
@@fundybanjos Yes! The guitar I played with was in its standard tuning and I didn't know what to do, but I know DD tuning. I can ask the guitar to put a capo on the second fret.
@fundybanjosАй бұрын
@@BanjoRose_down-picker if they were playing in standard tuning you could play it in double C. Or it's possible to play out of D on standard tuning on the guitar. So they don't necessarily have to capo to second to play on double D. Anyhow, hope I'm not confusing the matter. Good luck, it's a tricky tune, it's crooked in the B part.

Thanks! It's supposed to be in dCGCD, so, double C with the 5th dropped way down. But I didn't realize that when recording it. So I played in double C, relatively at least. I honestly don't notice a huge difference dropping the 5th down for this one.

Is this in the same tuning a "Cumberland Gap"? Great tune and well played. Been wanting to learn it since I first heard Jason Romero and Pharis play it.
@fundybanjos2 ай бұрын
Yes, it's the same tuning. fDGCD relatively at least. Not sure if I was dropped down a step or not. Good luck learning it, hopefully this video helps, but I made a minor timing error on this one. I have another video I did with the guitar and banjo and got rid of the timing mistake.

@@abbanjo13 thanks a lot! I got the notes right, I think... But I got a message from Dan himself and he explained he wasn't doing so much complicated stuff with his thumbs, he was doing alternate string pull offs. So I just corrected the way I'm playing it and maybe I'll make another video sometime. Still hitting the same notes but it's a bit easier without my weird technique I was doing.
@nicholasresch96144 ай бұрын
Man. I cant thank you enough for this. Been playing for about 4 years and only just started messing around in other tunings besides G. Mostly double C but ive always been curious about the sawmill stuff. I still cant learn by ear so i come on youtube and slow videos down a bit until i figure them out. Never thought i would be playing this song when i first heard Jason's stuff.
@fundybanjos4 ай бұрын
@@nicholasresch9614 no problem! Good luck learning it. The tuning is the same as sawmill but the 5th is tuned down a step. So fDGCD, sometimes called Sandy river bell tuning. Jason plays it down quite a bit though from what I remember. So that timing I gave, relatively, but tuned down a step or step and a half. Hope that's helpful
@nicholasresch96144 ай бұрын
@@fundybanjos Yea I saw in another comment that the 5th string was F so i had a head start there. Took awhile to figure out a couple of those alternate pull offs but i got there eventually. Your playing is so smooth! Might have to give that stepped down tuning a try because it sounds incredible. Blows my mind that people can come up with these melodies. Thanks again man!
