Back from drilling weep holes in my concrete tile roof. My friend who restores rooves said to use 5mm masonry drill bit with extension if needed. Ended up getting MAKITA 5 x 465mm 4-Cut SDS-Plus Masonry Drill Bit - NEMESIS-2 E-04195 from Total Tools didn't require extension as this drill bit is long enough. Drilled using rotary mode and not the hammer action. House had been repointed over existing pointing thereby blocking the weep holes. Had a small leak that verified when is raining, was able to put my finger up under the ridge tile and was damp and leaking. Once hole is started lay drill bit against the tile to maintain the correct angle. Happy I found the cause of the leak and was able to fix it.

Why have they not invented ladders designed to have a 6/1 angle etc with a 4/1 angle it's much more likly for you to fall back. I guess the ladder would have to be stronger but some strong materials are light as a feather so the ladders wouldn't increase in weight that much.
@RoofRepairsSydney

This is because the main injury sustained from ladder falls is not from falling backwards from a steep ladder. It is from the feet of the ladder sliding out because the ladder is placed too shallow. You get tangled up with the ladder as it slides out under you and the fall is rather unpleasant. Because of this I prefer a 3/1 angle to decrease the chances of this from happening. The tie at the top is to provide restraint once you get up to the top. It keeps the steep ladder from tipping backwards and partially holds the top so that the feet are less likely to slide away from the wall.

@@RoofRepairsSydney Thanks for explaining this. I use a stand-off now which grips the wall in such a way that prevents the ladder from sliding down and out, it also adds stability reducing left and right sway and finally it takes the ladder off the wall so you have a better view of the job. Ideally houses should have pegs all the way round where you can hook on rope and secure ladders that way.

how do you clean water courses in the tile?
@RoofRepairsSydney
@RoofRepairsSydney 2 ай бұрын
Lift the corner of the tile covering the water course that you will be cleaning to expose the debris, Then use a flat screw driver to scrap the debris off the water course. My roofers prefer to use their battery powered workshop blower to blow the debris off.

Solutions: Trimdeck for low angle/skillion roofs. Zincalume/colorbond for all other roofs. Always have eaves, the wider the better. Never design a roof with an internal box gutter. Regularly (once or twice year) use a blower. And hail ? One of the biggest insurance pay-outs occurred when a hail-storm hit Sydney in 1999. A factor was tiled roofs. Corrugated roofing is far more resistant to hail damage. As well as providing a better rain cover for your roof.And it is longer lasting and requires less maintenance. One can only speculate that a preference for tiled roofs is habitual...that is what every one else has. Like the Americans' preference for pitch-based roofs that have a definite life-span. The main purpose of a house is to keep the water off the occupants and its contents. The purpose of a roof is to perform that function - and keep the water off itself. Water is the enemy of all building. This is a very serious problem that is solvable. From a Brisbane householder. For what it is worth.

I remember hearing Trump on his podcast saying: "Life is what you do while you are waiting to die, so you might as well do a good job. " - exactly the same principle as what you mentioned.

I am new to this, and agree the front or side is more convenient. However… I watched something from OSHA that pointed out the reason for attachment in the back. In a fall with back attachment your joints will be jerked forward, which is what they’re evolved to do (except for knees). In a fall with front attachment, your torso with be bent backwards, as will your neck, legs (except knees), and arms - and leave you suspended that way. After being bent backwards I don’t think I’d have much chance of self recovery as I’m not all that flexible even forwards. They didn’t discuss single side attachment, but I would expect that to torque your body halfway around, twisting your torso in alignment with the safety rope, followed eventually by your limbs and head at some point. This would leave you hanging sideways, limbs and head partially downward and not in great shape for self-recovery. With upper back attachment your arms move naturally forward, as do your legs (except knees), your back bends forward easily, and your head bends forward naturally. You end up reasonably upright and likely to be able to use a descender for self-rescue before getting suspension trauma from circulation loss hanging in a harness. The shock absorber stops your fall slower than a restraint strap will - just like seat belts and air bags stop your body more slowly than hitting the windshield of your car. The shock absorber is DESIGNED to fail, dissipating energy by snapping stitches instead of your body doing the same by snapping tendons, muscle, and cartilage. You do you, but it might be worth your while to give it some thought. I’ve collected enough minor injuries over the years that I don’t need any more.

Well done man. Excellent common sense approach to “fall protection” which is actually fall prevention. Lots of OSHA crap doesn’t make sense because once you’ve slipped off the edge and it arrests your fall, you’re still stuck hanging off the building waiting to die once the harness cuts the blood flow off in your legs. Keeping the line taught like in rock climbing or an Arborist application is how to stay ON THE ROOF! Thanks for sharing.
@firstmkb
@firstmkb 4 ай бұрын
You don’t have to stay stuck after a fall. I plan to have a descender line in case I fall off of my roof, and a knife to cut the straps if I need to. Lowering myself by hand from cut straps or even just dropping from that “halfway” point is still better than a full fall, or a poorly attached fall.

What if there is corrosion appearing on the scratch? How do you treat that?
@RoofRepairsSydney
@RoofRepairsSydney 5 ай бұрын
Corrosion will not usually appear at scratches. The zincalume coating will 'heal' even the deepest scratches. For example at the cut exposed edges of the colorbond metal, there is no corrosion.

Forgive me for my dumb question. Are you supposed to drill weep holes on both sides of the ridge?
@RoofRepairsSydney
@RoofRepairsSydney 5 ай бұрын
The answer is YES. There is a different roof tile on each side of the ridge capping and they both need to be drained.
@i1uvpreppyxo887

Hi Jack, at 2:40 the tiles have a small crown in the middle of the valleys: I guees that's why the weep hole goes to one side. But with the tiles you are drilling at 2:55 it lookes like the tile valleys (is that the right term) are flat. Does that mean the weepholes can go in the centre of the depression instead of off to one side? I hope so cause that's what I've done! Any advice gladly received thanks Tim
@RoofRepairsSydney
@RoofRepairsSydney 5 ай бұрын
Hi Tim, Weep holes should be installed at the lowest point of the roof tile - so that it can effectively drain out the trapped water. Therefore it will be somewhere at the 'valley' section (even though the valley can be a flat section). When roof tilers install ridge capping, it is firstly bedded on mortar and this is when the weep holes are created. Then when they come back to point over the bedding, the weep holes are covered and become hidden. So, how do the roof tiler find the weep holes again to re-instate them through the pointing? It is quite simple. They go either left or right. Middle is a bad option because it is difficult to locate. So, it will be on either side, as the flat valley transitions to a rise to the crest. So, when we have to drill through the hidden/blocked weep holes, it is easier to just find where the original weep holes are and drill through these. Left or right - never middle. If there are no original weep holes to drill through, we find that it is still easier to go left or right - rather than the middle. Hope this makes sense. Thanks, Jack

@@RoofRepairsSydney I found my weep holes are all placed in the left of the gully/valley (low point) on the tile under the ridge capping. One or two tiles had been replaced and must not have had weep holes prior, so I drilled right through the mortar bed, wasn't too bad as long as have the correct angle, careful not to drill in the tile but stay parallel to it.

Hi Jack, I like your attitude. I am 69. I spent a year renovating a 1951 house into an acupuncture clinic. I have never done any tradie job this size as I was an IT guy in an office tapping keyboards. I was mostly placed in my uncomfortable zones especially with unfamiliar tasks and insufficient tools. The body ached a lot and one has to know when to take breaks. Some jobs like felling trees right next to the house were dangerous if one did not risk manage each step. Recently, I had the roof repairs guys from the insurer coming to replace storm damage cap tiles. They are the better quality professionals to the substandard ones that you mentioned in another video. The living moves so keep moving. Cheers

for 20 foot high roof, does the latter have to be 5 feet out or can it be 3.5 feet out because of the space?
@RoofRepairsSydney
@RoofRepairsSydney 7 ай бұрын
The 4/1 ratio is meant to be a guide on ladder safety. A shallower angle (more that 5 feet horizontal) will start increasing the chances of the feet of the ladder slipping on the ground and sliding out. It will also put more strain on the ladder and the top support. A steeper angle (3.5 feet) will mean that there is less likelihood of the feet of the ladder sliding out - therefore safer. But it means that as you climb the ladder, you cannot lean backwards too much -as this will affect the balance of the ladder and the risk of falling (with the ladder) backwards increases. I personally prefer a ladder steeper than 1/4. Because I have had my ladder slip out from under me a few times. I lean forward as I climb and then install the top ladder tie when I get to the top. The tie then means I can lean backwards with more confidence, without the ladder pulling away from the top support as I use the ladder during the day. When you understand the basics of how a ladder functions, then you can make up your own rules.

Been fixing leaks for over 20 years and notice the problem is the flashing is too close to the upturn which give the upturn less tolerance. Flashing should be wider extra 200mm to allow rain water to fall further away from the upturn and lessen the overflow and to increase tolerance. Don't forget that rain water also splash as it hit the corroagation and narrow flashing allow the splashing to happen right where the opening at the upturn. Increase the tolerance by using wider flashing reduce any chance of capillary action too

Good practice to tie off to structure, (maybe at least 35mm x 70mm truss/rafters) then for me personally once you have lad a few sheets install temp anchor with rope and grab set up and always keep in mind to not leave slack on your ropes, short fall distance is critical, Stay safe mate!

G'day G'day, my names daneil and i just moved into a new house, well new to us as it was built in the 6ps or 70s and within a month of moving in we started to get water stains on our ceiling so i went up and had a look see and there was the 3 or 4 minor cracks in the bottom of severl tiles which was mentioned in the inspection report but what was mentioned was in the report was that all of the ridge lines both horizontal and diagonally were either crack or chipped and in multiple places missing and being on the pension and having spent our last cent on buying it i had to redon all of the ridge line cementing myself reoving ot all cleaning and then cementing it back in and am quater way thru flexible pointing so i can guarantee for certain that there are no weep tiles at all as none of the roofing videos mentioned them and i only watched the ones made by professional roofers showing how to do it. All water leaks have stopped and as soon as i get the money together I'll be buying more flexible pointing stuff to finish it off so my question is should i drill the weeps now or wait until i finish repointing then drill the weel holes and what size drill bit should i use, 4mm 5mm 8mm?
@RoofRepairsSydney
@RoofRepairsSydney 8 ай бұрын
Hi Daniel, We used a 6.5mm masonry drill bit on the video. You should upsize to 8mm if you can. We recommend drill the weep holes before you do the flexible pointing. Then, after the flexible pointing has been done, clear out the weep holes just by poking through the 8mm weep holes with a 6.5mm rod/drill bit.

I've never hear of "weep holes" in the ridge caps. Is this a comon design, globally? P.S. I'm a homeowner in S. Africa, and have been experiencing weeping during heavy rain. I've lived in the house since 1976, the roof has been professionally painted every +- 10 years and thought that this fairly recent issue was due to high winds pushing the rain up,under the concrete tiles.

Weep holes are one way to release trapped water. Since trapped water is universal, then weep holes should also be universal.
