What those men think is smoke is deadly gases likely to explode - if it is a lithium battery explosion they are in serious danger to their health. A lithium ion battery is not a fire, it is an explosion and is very difficult to put out unlike an ordinary battery. Do not breath in this gas and get away as quickly as possible. Even fire brigades are not up to date with these dangerous bomb-batteries. Send them back to the manufacturers - sue them if you are damaged because they all know how dangerous these batteries really are. Regards.

because lithium reacts violently with water. that's why they didn't use water. the fire would have actually accelerated if they had done that

Never throw batteries into garbage. Throw them in the ocean. They make excellent coral beds due to their unique ability where Lithium binds with the salt in the water, creating hardshell artificial reefs!

There are public garages in a few different countries that are banning electric cars due to issues like this. Can y'all just imagine if every single car in the world was electric. Lithium batteries can be very safe the problem is some people neglect them due to financial reasons and a lot of people modify them to make their battery operated stuff more powerful. Just imagine if the whole world had only batteries in their cars and in their houses. I just don't think people are responsible enough to where we can get there yet

Lithium in it's dangerous form (requiring strict education what not to do with it) never should have been used in consumer products. We have people that throw cellphones in trash, continue using bloated battery packs, poking battery with knife. They won't know it's danger until they get hurt from it. They def won't witness that someone that work in handling all their trash might get hurt from one little battery. I wish these life moments were shown in school and got discussed a bit such that future generations would grow up being part of the orchestra instead of soloing like most today in disarray.

Maine has an outstanding recycling system in place, as well as wonderful tools for educating the public about the importance of recycling. The rest of the country (and world) should look to follow Maine's example in this area.

It needs to be made known that you should submerge old batteries in a bucket of salt water for a week or so before then using a multimeter to test for any residual voltage, if its zero, then it can be safely disposed of. I have a lot of rc cars and planes and a few boats, and tbh sometimes batteries get damaged and though are still useable, aren't safe and need to be removed from service, this is how i dispose of them, and have never had a fire or heard of one happening after ive disposed of one
@zepm71842 жыл бұрын
If it is a lithium battery and the pack is damaged then it could explode in water. If it is not damaged and still sealed then not sure the salt water would do anything but I would not want to find out. Just recycle them properly,
@HardcoreRC2 жыл бұрын
One problem, with putting in salt water, the tabs that attach to the cells dissolve before the cells are any where near discharged, then when you put the multi meter on it will show zero volts when its still has charge in the cells, this is simple electrolysis in action - the salt water thing is an myth
@stickyfox2 жыл бұрын
@@HardcoreRC Salt doesn't work because it's not salt you need, it's a base, like K2CO3. Industrial recyclers use *molten* salt sometimes, but this is obviously not the "low flammability" method home processors should try first! Also, the solution needs to get *inside* the battery. Soaking the outside does nothing.
@HardcoreRC2 жыл бұрын
@@stickyfox Indeed as i said salt doesn't work, its a legacy from when it was advised to cut open the cells in salt water, not a good idea with todays high capacity packs
@stickyfox2 жыл бұрын
@@HardcoreRC Disposing of batteries in salt water was never a good idea. It just makes a corrosive mess that's more difficult to dispose of than a simple dead battery. People just have this empirical idea that salt makes water conductive and therefore is somehow a good material to neutralize batteries. It usually says right on the package how to properly dispose of them. My favorite method is smashing them or piercing them with some kind of projectile. :)
