That's funny, someone on BGG said it reminded them of Charles Stross's Laundry Files novels. I hadn't heard of those or this one, but apparently I'm not the only one that has thought about "questing" in an office setting, lol. My main inspiration was just making a thematic reason why using a binder-clip and paperclips would make sense and it took off from there :) I appreciate the heads up on the similarity with that book, thanks!

Still early on, but finally got to a point where I felt like I could show off the initial design concept. I don't have written rules yet, still working out some significant things - but hopefully soon I'll have rules as well as PnP files. Follow the link in the description for the Work-in-Progress thread -rules and PnP files will be linked there when ready, as well as the most up-to-date versions. I don't love that the font size is so small, but I really wanted to maximize the narrative and I also didn't want to increase the card size from standard Poker - maybe it will have to happen, but I'm resisting. I'm interested in any input/feedback to help make the game better either here on KZbin or in the WIP thread on BGG. Thanks for watching!

What happens if a joker is drawn but you don't have a card in the back to reference suit?
@ConstantChaosGames
@ConstantChaosGames 5 ай бұрын
Since the back of the deck is basically your discard, you should almost always have a card there. I can think of 2 exceptions. 1) The first card in the back is another joker which doesn't have a suit. In this case I would look at the next card. 2) You draw the Joker as the 1st card of that round, so there are no discards yet. In this rare case, I think I would draw a random card from the deck, just to determine the suit, and then put that card back randomly into the deck. Hope that helps. Thanks for checking out the game!

Ok, my question is: in this version, you just delve til you are uncomfortable and always go five rooms back? This seems like the only rule change I noticed. As far as i remember, you have to exit the same amount of rooms you entered, so your exit tracker could work differently. For each room, another card is turned and added to the "tracker" (one turned card from each room). At the moment you choose to escape, all "tracked" cards must be turned back one by one to exit the dungeon. Hope this makes sense. I love the utility of this setup you have developed. Thank you!
@ConstantChaosGames
@ConstantChaosGames 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's really the only change - not having an equal number of delves to retreats. Why 5? It seemed like a good amount that was easy enough to track with some extra cards in-hand. The idea of tracking the delve on the way in, and then matching it on the way out seemed like too much to me (though maybe it isn't). Essentially it could be done by using a tracker card for each delve, then removing them 1 by 1 for the retreat.

@12:05 Strongest card adds to the final conflict's difficulty (Queen of Hearts) and weakest card (5 of Hearts) goes to a pile to use for your final hand. This was added to the rules doc but after I filmed this video. And @13:03 setup of the final hand is a bit different: those "weakest cards" set aside from tricks errors, and then 4 random cards added for you and the final conflict (2 each) drawn 2 at a time, so strongest added to the conflict and weakest for you.

@@ConstantChaosGames I played through the basic game. It seemed to work fine. The rules were very clear (a plus for me as I’m easily confused by rules.) I think I won, but I won’t swear to it. Because I’m old and easily confused, I did have trouble keeping all the rules in my head, and had to keep referring to the rules, about the odd and even cards, and forbidden tricks, and the support cards, and so on. For that reason, I probably won’t play it very often. I think if I were familiar with the story I would have found it more interesting, and I probably would have had a better understanding of the motivation for what seemed like arbitrary rules to an outsider. I did like the basic ideas of having two hands to follow a trick, and having a tableau lead but getting to choose which card to focus on, and being able to use a matching rank to win a trick. I also liked paying penalty cards to the Final Conflict pile, and stockpiling support cards for the third round. It reminded me a bit of German Whist, where you play half the game to build up a good hand, and then play the scoring round using that hand. I think you’ve got a good and interesting system here, though it was hard on my old brain. I’ll be very interested in hearing what other people think. I expect that fans of the story may like it more. I saw your post in the 1 Player Guild on BGG. When you get something I can link to, like a WIP post, I can add this to my geeklist. Let me know.

That was fun, and very clear. I like the theme, but I think it needs just a bit more flavor. I was grinning about the ninjas on the motorcycles. The ninjas, spies and Nazis worked well, as did the Ace of the Covenant. I'd like to know what kind of cool swag the other aces represent. I'd like some story justification for what's going on when you upgrade by threes. I'd kind of like more idea of what the number cards represent (maybe the different suits are different kinds of tools? Or maybe the numbers are? Could the suits be somehow connected to the characters represented by the jacks?) None of that would affect the rules, but it would make it even more engaging. In my comments on your other video, I mentioned The Shooting Party. I think you would love it (I rethemed it a bit in my own mind: he had the theme being a scoundrel seducing the wives of the hosts and stealing their jewels; I think of it being a spy caper with information being the treasure being obtained and the wives being contacts.) Your game also reminded me a bit of Fool's Journey (the 2016 game, not the 2015 game.) It's played with tarot cards, and has a satchel rather like yours. I think it was also an inspiration for Solitary Journey as well. There's a lot of cross-pollination that happens, and it's so much fun. (I seem to remember that the dungeon crawler Scoundrel was an inspiration for Fool's Journey.) Anyway, I liked this a lot; thanks for sharing it. I'll keep an eye open for any updates.

This is great input, thank you so much for taking a look. Yes, I have been working on more granular ideas, but they've been jumbled in the process of developing and making tons of changes. Honestly, I'm still brainstorming these but would love any ideas you may have. But here's where I'm at: 2 - Gear and rations (to help you utilize a horse and travel to it), 5 - the location of horses / or the Ace of the Covenant, 8 - Securing the horse (to engage with a ninja, or to travel to the Ace. 3 - Documents (fake passports etc) help to get you: 6 - Top secret intel, which gets you: 9 - Access into the hidden base to take out a spy. 4 - Research to decode: 7 - fragments and inscriptions with symbols, in order to find the: 10 - Secret passageway into the Nazi fortress and take out a Nazi. Aces all have supernatural properties. Hearts is a Talisman, Clubs is an Idol, and Diamonds is a Crystal. :)

This is great! I've long enjoyed the tarot version, and it looks like your system would work with it as well. Usng a single card as a divider is brilliant. This game and The Shooting Party were the two inspirations for my in-hand game Solitary Journey. I figured out how to play The Shooting Party in-hand, but never even considered trying to do the same for Dungeon Solitaire. I really like your solution. I'm a little confused about why you give yourself five tries to get back out. I've always played that once you turn around you have the same number of turns you took going in. Maybe that's what you were doing and I wasn't paying attention. Did the five come from the number of turns you took before turniing around? If so, I missed it.
@ConstantChaosGames
@ConstantChaosGames 10 ай бұрын
Thank you! Solitary Journey is amazing. I just learned about it a few weeks ago, and it sparked a lot of ideas. In fact, I just posted a video of an Indiana Jones themed game that was highly inspired by Solitary Journey and I give Solitary Journey a shout out and link it in the video description and the rules doc. There are lots of differences, but wanted to make sure to give major credit to your game for the inspiration. The working title of that new game is "Raiders of the Lost Ace" :) I found it was too hard to try and keep track of the number of delves, and decided to use the visual of the deck being half gone as a minimum to turn around. Then, I went with the idea of 5 because it was a low enough number to track using some place-holder discards. So, you have to be halfway through the deck, but you can start the 5 turns when ever you decide, but then that's it. I'm definitely open to other ideas, as long as they don't include too much tracking. But yes, 5 was an arbitrary number that I went with. I will check out The Shooting Party, I don't know if I've seen that one. I'm a big fan of your game, and seeing that you looked at one of my videos made my day. Thank you!

My ending score: 0/49, meaning no Tomb Hoards, and 49 total points out of 100 possible: Kings are 10, diamonds are face value, 3 points each for Potions (Jokers) -for this variant vs 6 points for 1 joker in the original game. Summary of differences, and my reasoning why: 1) Using the numbered heart cards: Adds more cards to the base game. 2) Starting with a Potion (Joker): Prevents cases of losing too soon and reshuffling. Same reason for the remaining 3: More choices while playing. 3) Binding a Divine Favor (Queen) to use later. 4) Option to take damage to avoid an encounter. 5) Diamond and Heart encounters choose damage as time lost or health lost. Yes, I appreciate your patience in that respect - I do my best to do a playthrough and explain as I go, but I don't lay the ground work of defining everything very well. I'm a big fan of Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels and I did make a custom deck for a Sandman themed version of basically the same game with a few thematic changes - but I've put the development of that version on hold for now and focusing in on this main game. I appreciate the question. According to this version and the most current version of the standard game (2/12/2024 video version of Haunted Solitaire) the face-cards do not capture/cover any cards if they have already covered a card, or a card is on top of them. Hopefully that makes sense. Yes, to make this thematic for Sandman I changed the Ace of Hearts from a "relic" to Sandman's sibling "Desire" who is often a major conflict to him. Yeah, I forgot to use Delirium's ability at @10:18 right after Beelzebub captures a card, the Endless go next. Her power is to free a captured card to an open space or use it on a card, and that wouldn't have really affected the game. The only 2 cards that were captured was the Ace of Clubs and the 10 of Diamonds, neither one would have been useful at that exact moment, or the next few cards that are drawn either. Thank you for checking this out. I really like this version with the theme, but I've put it on hold while I finalize the main Haunted Solitaire game. The most recent version (2/12/2024 video) is pretty good in my opinion -pretty hard to beat on the most difficult setting but also scalable. If you get a chance to watch it and try that version I would love any and all feedback.

I like this idea. I just worry that the rules are too noodley, as in theres too much on the mental stack, and the challenge comes too fast that it would be difficult for players to stay accurate and honest given that it seems to be a solo game. Because the rules require the player to penalize themselves when something happens, if I were to miss it or forget a rule, I might not follow everything accurately then end up realizing I should have lost several turns ago. Then backtrack and be unsure if I should have won or not.

I appreciate the feedback. This version does have more of a mental load, and I may have a designer's bias to weight because I've been so involved in it. The prior version (1/16/24 video) is much less of a mental load, but it felt like something was missing. So, this updated version may be too much - and I will need to get some more feedback and see if I've over done it. Thanks!

Yeah. They are similar enough that I was playing with 2 icon choices for the kitchen, and it's funny that I wasn't 100% consistent in this version. You'll notice that the reference card with all the icons has a refrigerator icon that opens with the freezer door on the side vs the other icon on the cards uses an icon with freezer on the top. Of those 2, I'm not sure which is better, but I'm leaning toward the side by side doors. And different color cards is a great idea for the card types.
