What gauge metal do you usually recommend using for your dies, I have a few of your longhorn ones .
@JimBrandvik
@JimBrandvik 7 ай бұрын
It kinda depends on the die and what I'm making but I generally use 22 to 18 gauge. I like 18 or 20 for bigger things like conchos but I prefer 20 to 22 for smaller stuff. Thanks for watching!

The fact that items get lost and possibly found in your shop is heartening to me as this literally happens multiple times a day in my shop and has for over 40 years. At least I know I am not alone in this malady. Also want to say that I truly enjoy watching your videos and that even with the years I have spent as a silver and goldsmith I still pickup pointers from you.

Thanks for the videos, I can get busy now!! add on... Ive been practicing a couple of times today (shhh at work) and someone like me that has never used one of these before can whip this out in no time... awesome!! When I need a new one, guess where I'm going?? to your shop!! Thanks for making me look good.

This may seem like a silly question as I am new to silversmithing but is it necessary to anneal the 18 gauge bezel to make it easier to shape over the stone? Thank you sir.
@JimBrandvik
@JimBrandvik Жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, No it's not necessary. It will already be annealed after having been soldered to the back.

Would you recommend soft solder for the front of a concho after soldering the Chicago screw to the back of the concho? How do you set a stone in a concho without undoing the solder securing the Chicago screw on the back?
@carlstanley9226
@carlstanley9226 Жыл бұрын
I am confused by your choice of stay-silv solder? What reason do you have for using that? You used such nice turquoise and did so much beautiful engraving why not use hard silver solder to solder your bezel closed then you can use medium or easy solder to solder the bezel to the plate. That's why we have Hard - Medium - Easy and Extra Easy silver solder. Stay-silv can tear away when setting stones - it is soft like lead solder.

I noticed in one of your tutorial video's that you used blue painters tape to wrap around the stone in order to find the length of bezel you need. However, that method doesn't include the thickness of the bezel wire itself. The tape works great for plain bezel wire (which is around 26g). How are you getting your exact measurements? I have your Top-Jawz & Bez Jawz tool set (which I LOVE). I've made 2 pieces; one for a round stone & one for an oval. In order for me to find out how much I'll need when using thicker sheet metal for a serrated bezel, I use a math calculation. Just curious...I've wrapped tape around a stone & then used the math calculation...compared the two, & the math calculation gave me the exact length, not the tape. The tape measurement was always too short. I would love to be able to use stone shapes that aren't oval & round, but I only know of the math calculations for ovals & rounds. When you use tape, do you add a certain number of millimeters to compensate for the thickness of the bezel wire?

It works well enough. It gets me close. Then I can quickly stretch to fit perfectly using a bezel mandrel with a couple taps using a rawhide mallet. I like fitting up that way. Quick and simple. But use the method you like best. There’s many ways to skin a cat!

Hi Jim how do you make the skull and cross bones on the patterned guitar pick ?
@JimBrandvik
@JimBrandvik 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I used a texture plate and rolling mill to first apply the texture to sheet of 18 gauge sterling, then I cut out the guitar pick shape with a jewelers saw. Then I used an impression die to form a separate sheet of 22 gauge silver into the skull and crossed bones and sawed them out. Then I tinned the under side of the skull and crossed bones with medium solder and then soldered them to the 18 gauge guitar pick shape.

Hay there! I have a question about different metals vs different types of solder…..I’m trying to repurpose some rivets that I cut off n old belt and sanded flat. My plan was to solder flat Chicago screws onto the backs. The soft solder I have, with my solder gun, runs right off the concho AND the Chicago screw…even after I roughed them up some. So, I bought some flus and wire solder, and tried to lightly use my propane torch, and that solder wouldn’t stick either, PLUS it melted part of my concho! I’ve been digging and can’t find a solution to this issue. I would greatly appreciate any advice you may have!!!
