Hey Jim, new subie here!! Thanks for the tut vid😀 just one question: After measuring the circ of stone with tape, do you do the math to determine the spacing of the cuts? I was thinking that maybe after soldering there might be a slight inconsistency of the cut spacing. THANKS again. 😊😊Love that style! Also, what guage did you use?
@JimBrandvik
@JimBrandvik 5 жыл бұрын
I usually just cut off the bezel at the closest castellation cut. Then if I need, i will stretch the bezel back up to fit the stone. Stretching the bezel can be easily done by placing it on a mandrel and drawing it back up to size by tapping with a rawhide mallet. Thanks for watching. (18gauge is my favorite)

I got your indexing tool set and can not wait to get started.... I do have a question... to get the height of the bezel material do you measure the height of the stone griddle or the height of the dome? or something else....
@JimBrandvik
@JimBrandvik 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kenneth! Thanks for your question! I measure the height of the stone not including the dome. If the height of the bezel is higher, it will need to pushed over the face's outer edge which can be difficult with thicker bezels. But everyone has their own preferences.

I LOVE the sound effects, that's hilarious! A chain saw, that's so cute! Fabulous invention! The jaws look a bit beat up after the sawing of one bezel strip, can they be repolished? or......?
@JimBrandvik
@JimBrandvik 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Gabby! The jaws do get marked up, but that's not a problem. It just gives them a bit character and shows that you've been working! The ones I was using in the video have been used to make a whole lotta bezels.

This may seem like a silly question as I am new to silversmithing but is it necessary to anneal the 18 gauge bezel to make it easier to shape over the stone? Thank you sir.
@JimBrandvik

Hi Jeff, No it's not necessary. It will already be annealed after having been soldered to the back.

I've watched several of your videos and I have both of your tools. I am still puzzled how to use the Best Jawz.. I'm using 18 ga silver and it sits all the way down in the jaws, leaving none above the Jawz to saw.... I sawed some through the Jawz but still needed to finish with a disc cutter..... What am I doing wrong?
@JimBrandvik
@JimBrandvik 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Leslie, First, as you can see from my videos, my Bez-jawZ are marked up from my saw blade. That is fine. Don't worry about cutting into them slightly. As far as your need to "finish with a disc cutter". Please explain what you mean by "finish". Do you mean you are using a disk cutter to cut deeper? If so, there is no need to do so. Just cut deeper with your saw even though you will be marking up the Bez-jawZ. If you mean you are using the disk cutter to make the cuts wider, you can instead just use a bigger saw blade. What size saw blade are you using?
@lesliemaya-charles3188
@lesliemaya-charles3188 6 жыл бұрын
Okay, I was using a 3 saw blade and using the disc cutter to make the score go all the way to the bottom of the bezel.... I guess I'll just get a little more aggressive! Thanks for the quick response! I do love the look your tools allows me to achieve!

hi. have the tools and they're great. wondering what is the smallest and largest height bezel wire you can use with the tool?
@JimBrandvik
@JimBrandvik 5 жыл бұрын
I don't use pre-formed bezel wire when making castellated bezels because it is too thin. Cut your bezel material from sheet as in the video. There are really no height limitations. Just try to match the girdle height of your stone when you cut the bezel from sheet. Also, I recommend 18gauge sheet as a minimum thickness if you plan to extend the lines down the outer perimeter of the bezel. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!!
@brucecreech8885
@brucecreech8885 5 жыл бұрын
Did you take into consideration the thickness of the bezel material? I tried to make my FIRST one yesterday using this process and the bezel was too short! :-(
@JimBrandvik
@JimBrandvik 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce! Yes, I did but I totally missed mentioning that or missed recording it. Sorry. :-( One thing you can still do is stretch the bezel on a mandrel by hammering it with a rawhide mallet. Or you can reduce the size of the stone with abrasive.
